I got the piss taken out of me for waiting almost a year before getting around to DDP and everything else on MAME. Dodonpachi around these parts is kinda like been into 2d platformers and never playing a Mario game

For Maikeru_Rocks,
Just wait until you try out a real DDP PCB, then there's no going back once you get bitten by the arcade PCB bug. It's happened to me and I have no regrets myself.
True story:
Saw an Astro City cab with DDP up & running at a Japanese game center with a price tag of 50 yen back in late April of 2000. Proceeded to the money changer machine and put in a 100 yen coin and out popped two 50 yen coins in the coin chute tray. Went back to the ol' AC cab and sat down to try it out properly. It was pure shmup heaven to be able to try it out in it's orignal arcade PCB iteration as it was meant to be played. The experience of playing the real PCB deal doesn't compare to playing it on Mame (or even Raine emulation) back in the day. Vowed to myself that one of these days I'd get a DDP PCB for my own private arcade stash when the time/situation was right. Fast forward a few years later, did finally snag a DDP PCB to play. I wasn't a stranger to playing the original USA version Donpachi PCB at a local arcade back in 1995 either (that was an rare exception for an American indy arcade to be stocking a DP PCB though back in those days -- the owner was into stocking arcade shmups for some variety & change of pace to draw in the hard-core shmuppers as well).
Why not give both Dodonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou and DDP-DOJ Black Label shmups a spin on Mame/Mame32 or on the ol' Xbox (to see how well they fare compared to DDP)? The addition of the Hyper option adds a new wrinkle to the classic DDP gameplay/game mechanics quite easily.

If you think that's good play DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou and DonPachi. They don't suck like the DoDonPachi does.

Re: My first time playing Cave's DoDonPachi
Dodonpachi is good because it has a basic system which is suited for beginners to learn the genre. Players don't have to learn some complex systems like Espgaluda just to play the game for survival, they just point and shoot basically.
I understand why people don't like the chaining but the game itself is excellent. There's a reason why it is highly recommended as one of the first shmups to check out if you are just getting into them.

The DoDonPachi recommendation was understandable when we couldn't emulate the superior Dai-Ou-Jou.

Re: My first time playing Cave's DoDonPachi
However, The original DDP is a lot easier to 1cc and is thus the better place to start. In the original game you have more bombs to use and its not like DDP's patterns are easier.Chaos Phoenixma wrote:The DoDonPachi recommendation was understandable when we couldn't emulate the superior Dai-Ou-Jou.

Honestly, I don't think DDP or DOJ are very good starting points outside of just credit feeding through to kill some time. That mother fucking chaining pretty much turned me off even trying to play for score for a year.

You get the exact same amount of bombs in Dai-Ou-Jou with Shotia, assuming you never die while in hyper. And B-Shotia is pretty much the cheese shottype like DDP's C-S.

Exy may be best, but some players will prefer the more bombs that the other 2 have. I could probably cheese myself a 1-all with Leinyan or Shotia, but I pretty much just play Exy, so I usually game over in stage 4.

To keep Laser and Shot power when you die instead of having 1 reset.

Re: My first time playing Cave's DoDonPachi
Not sure if it applies to DOJ but I read a while back that while playing shot type in DDP the power ups mostly just increase the range of the laser and the power only goes up by like 1 damage per frame.
