Baldr Force EXE - Dreamcast Version, whaddya know?

Post by CulDad78 »

Thinking on this one. Gameplay looks pretty legit - sort of a Bangai-o / Cannon Spike / Gundam hybrid.

Has anyone played this recently and what are your thoughts?

Primarily, and questions are based on some youtube vids at this point:

-Is it text heavy throughout, or just as the "story" is set up for the first few minutes?
-If the text is throughout, how much of a pain in the ass is it...for a non-JP speaker that is?
-Is it in your opinion worth the $60 price tag?
-Does it compare closely to any other particular game you can think of?

I know it's a porny game for the PC, devoid of graphic content on the DC. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a fan translation for the PC out there. Reportedly it's easy like that: you click through dialogues, then there goes some combat you win easily, then click through dialogues etc. I have neither played nor "played" it, so I can't tell how easy it actually is to beat.

I bought this when it came out .
The game has sort of a top view arena style battle game play.
I still am not certain what is going on but in between each level you seem to be hooking up with ladies you work with?

Its fun.

The Baldr Force EXE anime series is cool to watch...weighs in at a mere four episodes in length though.

The Baldr games aren't shooters so this topic should be moved to the off topic board.

The combat I've seen on YouTube looked like an arena shooter.

Yeah, it is. I forgot that as of Senko no Ronde, we actually allow discussion here of arena shooters that feature melee options. I'm too used to back when even stuff like Smash TV was considered off topic.

Anyway, I actually have the PS2 version of this game but haven't played it recently. It's one half adventure mixed in with one half top-down arena action. You don't need to understand Japanese but you'll miss out on the entire story if you don't. You'd also better like moe because you'll be interacting with your female teammates a lot.

There's no reason you should be paying $60 for either version at this point. I got my PS2 copy for $20 brand new years back mostly because of the mecha, which was more under-emphasized than I expected. That I didn't pick up a brand new LE of Baldr Bullet Equilibrium later on for $32 speaks to my interest for this game.

The $60 price notation comes from the lowest i've seen on ebay for the DC version, currently the only copy on there is $66 and I never see it on the forums. Gamebaz has it for $60 - lowest i've seen, so...that is why I threw that number our there.

If cost is an important factor for you, I'd suggest conducting further research. eBay BIN and Gamebaz are coincidentally 2 of the biggest locations for ripoff pricing. One way you can get a better estimate is by checking Amazon and Yahoo Japan. They may not give you the cheapest prices shipped to your door and it won't matter if you want a game ASAP but they may help put prices into perspective.

While the DC version is uncommon from my experience, y2500-3000 should be a more accurate going rate and it may not even be selling at that point: http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/offer-listin ... ition=used
And nobody is biting on a brand new copy for y4000: http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k131376018

Unless you can read and understand the japanese text in the game, I'd say: save your money!

I can't read or understand it and I found the "action" parts too shallow and meaningless to like the game.
I bought it on release hoping it would be playable because of the action parts, but was left DISSAPOINTED.

^ Thanks, thats what i'm wanting to know really. The action looks great on 2 minute youtube vids, but if its on youtube, its gonna be the good stuff, no? So I really just need to know from someone who bought it for the action, but was hung up by all the text. Thanks a bunch.

Saw this topic last night and gave the game a try. I must say I enjoyed the gameplay, it was fast, fluid and had great control. But I'll be damned if I am going to sit through 10 minutes of taping the A button during dialogue to get 2 minutes of gameplay. I got frustrated and probably won't have another go at it.
What are you trying to tell me, that I can dodge bullets?
