Death Smiles 2X
Death Smiles 2X
Anyone played this? Is it worth the $30? I have been hearing people calling this one boring. Would you buy this one over futari? Also can anyone recommended a place to buy futari? Play Asia looks like they have been back ordered for a couple of weeks :/

ugliest cave game made. some say the gameplay is good but i cant get past the muddy ass textures and playstation 1 grade character models. buy trouble witches or guwange for waaaaaaay less.
Re: Death Smiles 2X
There is already a thread on this.
But, if you want my personal opinion, it's one of my favorite Cave STGs out there. For some reason, people really hate the 3d graphics but I think its a pretty nice change of pace. But that's not the point, the point is in the gameplay. I don't have much experience with Arcade mode so I won't go into that, but X-mode is a ton of fun. The scoring is very intuitive and easy to pick up compared to the first one.
There is a lot of mixed feelings about this game but I say go for it. It really is worth the $30.
If you live in the states, videogamesnewyork.com is your best bet to find Futari.

There's nothing boring about it as long as you're playing for score. The game systems in both Arcade mode and X-mode are well designed, aside from some scoring imbalances between characters, and the stage and enemy design is about as good as any of Cave's other games. Most of the criticism I've seen is for the Dreamcast-quality 3D graphics (in Arcade mode, anyway. X-mode looks decent).evilGUI wrote: I have been hearing people calling this one boring.
If I had to choose one, I'd definitely go with Futari. DS2 is a good game, but Futari is on another level. It's more refined and has enough content to last players of all skill levels a very, very long time.evilGUI wrote:Would you buy this one over futari?

Thanks for the input! I'm really just looking for something fresh, watched a video on trouble witches. Can you disable the horrible dub? I've got a Guwange Pcb but no way to hook it up, works and only cost me $50 off of the auctions.

Yesasia has it, but it costs three dollars more (free shipping if you spend $40):evilGUI wrote:Anyone played this? Is it worth the $30? I have been hearing people calling this one boring. I wouldn't call DeathSmiles II "boring," but 30 bucks for a download-only game is a rip off. I wouldn't pay a cent for something that's download-only if I can't burn it onto a disc. Suffice to say, I bought Futari

I'll take that useless PCB off your hands for 60$, if you like.evilGUI wrote:Thanks for the input! I'm really just looking for something fresh, watched a video on trouble witches. Where on earth did you get a Guwange for $50!? I've been looking for that game for ages.

There's a thread for it and it's kind of a dead horse at this point, but DS2 is excellent fun if you like scoring and quite challenging to play for non-trivial scores, it's pretty hectic in Arcade mode with a LOT of flying around the screen (WR movie if you're curious) and a bit more settled down in X-Mode, but it's not recommended if you just like to play games for a clear/1cc since DS2 is always easy to merely clear.
The game looks fine when in motion and if you're doing things right the screen will be covered in rings and bullets, so don't just rely on screenshots
The Arcade port is awful though with a few remaining bugs, no replays and no training mode, definitely Cave's worst but the game itself is pretty solid (and X-Mode is a standard port with no outstanding problem).
iconoclast, why do scoring imbalances matter though when the characters each have their own leaderboards?
I rather like the big differences between characters in both Deathsmiles compared to most other games, and you should always compare like to like even when character differences aren't so pronounced :s

I agree with the bolded, but I think ideally, a perfectly balanced game should have a cast of characters who have equal scoring potential. Obviously that almost never happens, but I think the balance in DS2 is particularly bad.Aliquantic wrote: iconoclast, why do scoring imbalances matter though when the characters each have their own leaderboards?I rather like the big differences between characters in both Deathsmiles compared to most other games, and you should always compare like to like even when character differences aren't so pronounced :s

I think it adds longevity to the game. It's one of the really good things about the Deathsmiles games, once you've "mastered" one character you can move onto another and you will have to relearn the games because each character is so different. You also have to put a lot of thought into the stage ordering as well.
I'd put the first game way above DS2, though it's worth $30 for the butchered arcade mode alone.
