hated bosses...
ok i'm just curious here due to my long suffering with gunbird. i've been trying to 1cc the game for months now and i can consistently reach the boss of stage 6, the big ass dragon, with two lives and bombs but every time he completely destroys me. not an occasional death but a constant stream of 'what the hell do i do's. and i have no idea at all how i'm supposed to kill him. i've done it on the easy setting once or twice and can then complete the final stage with total ease, but this one bloody boss is stoping it all from happening.
so has anyone else done this? i don't mean just found a boss tricky or likely to deal a cheap death, but come up against one that constantly destroys you. it's pretty soul destroying and psychologically i can't compete now as i know that i'm going to die every time i reach him. anyway i'm interested to hear what you have to say.

Off the top of my head, the list of bosses that I've never passed on all defaults.
Dimahoo - Level 5 boss
Strikers 1999 - Tank boss on 2nd loop (2nd loop tank is a beast)
Gradius 3 - Level 3 boss (bastard bastard bastard! Not even fun to fight)
Do Don Pachi - Last boss of 1st loop
Gunbird - Level 6 boss (never killed the last form)
Gunbird 2 - Level 6 boss (never have enough bombs by the time I get to em (2nd form)

I suck, so no 6th level boss hate from me.
Giga Wing - Volcano level boss if that level is the third one you play through.
DonPachi - That fricking SECOND LEVEL boss kills me ONCE, every time. No exceptions.
DoDonPachi - Second level boss in this one too! When it does the bullet scatters I always panic and run into something.
ESPrade - School level boss when it's the third level. Flat out nerve racking.

Blow up self to involve enemies.
Dimahoo - Dragon Boss (Stage 5) and Final Boss. These guys seriously turn an otherwise challenging game into a near impossible one.
ESPrade - Final Boss. Talk to the hand.
GigaWing - Stage 6 Boss. This has to be one of the poorest designed bosses ever. Not only does it take 10 mins. to beat, but its frame alone takes up half the screen.

Most any boss in Darius Gaiden after zones B and C, and most any boss after stage 2 in RayForce. Taito's games are stupidly hard--not "you just need practice" hard, but "give me your money" hard.
I got frustrated after my last game of DG so I just whipped this up in MS Paint:

The stage 2 boss of R-Type pisses me off, too.

Any one of Battle Garegga's soul-crushing foes. Too many bullets, not enough space, not enough speed, not enough firepower.... ARGH! Garegga owns my very being.
If I'm out of bombs, then anything after 1-4 in Strikers 1999 counts as mind-numbingly tough-vincible. Sometimes I can wing it in the F-4, but more often than not, it's "CONTINUE? 9.91... [YES] NO" for me.
Oh, and a few years ago, Einhänder's Stage 5 boss made me cry tiny tears whenever I'd inevitably get shot down rather stylishly by him and my precious Grenade stock would vanish. A pox on thee, Ausf D Dürer!

Having been playing Garegga regularly of late, its bosses have awakened the worst in me...namely, deadly self-confidence. It's not that I find the bosses impossible: quite the contrary, since at least once I've managed to beat the first 3 without dying or bombing, and the fourth without the former, at least. Now, though, that I know I CAN do it, somewhere in the back of my head I refuse to bomb when I get in trouble when fighting them, which means that unless I perform perfectly (which almost never happens), I'm gonna die, when I coulda lived, if I'd been a bit more humble. This really is one of the cruelest shmups ever conceived, heh.
Aside from that, the sixth boss in Gradius Gaiden tends to give me a lot of trouble...if the snapping jaws on the second form don't get me, then the vacuum thingy of its third will mess me up and send me straight into a bullet.

Recca - final boss - I've done it a couple times on one life, out of dozens of tries. All emulated, at that, against the claim that the real game doesn't slow down.
Radio Zonde - stage 6 - if anyone can survive the first life bar without bombing, they deserve a medal. I keep trying to analyze it every time I play, but the pattern's just overwhelming. The second bar is easier. Also, the last 2 stage bosses are utter hell, but I haven't played them so much.
Perfect Cherry Blossom - Chen - I played the demo a whole bunch on hard, don't think I ever 1-lifed Chen, who is in only stage 2. I think the star pattern spellcard is actually harder on Hard than on Lunatic. I never used bombs in that game, though, so maybe I deserve the headache.

"Can they really get inside my head?"
"As long as you keep an open mind."

I despise that boss that comes after the big robot in Layer Section/Rayforce. The generator thingy that shoots semi homing plasma balls, laser-spewing sphere droids, one-way-or-another-I'm-gonna-getcha-getcha-getcha-getcha homing lasers and flare mines among other nasties. Too f***ing hard after you managed to make it alive through that level.
I kid you not. I was really close to yanking the disc out of the saturn and stomp on it with all my might.

Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
Giga Wing - Stage six boss also.
Strikers 1945 Plus - Iron Casket on 1-4.
Strikers 1945 Plus - The two 1-7 mid-bosses.
Gunbird 2 - Second round Italy boss, final form. I don't know how many different attacks it has. It's one of my favorite bosses in a shooter, but how it pisses me off. I've only beaten the final form a grand total of one time without using bombs.
Gunbird 2 - Second round USA boss. And I thought the first round was annoying.

Tetran was already crazy enough. Berzerker (I think that's the second-to-last boss in the boss rush) is just impossible.Bloodreign wrote:Gradius 4 Tetran Boss in the boss rush, I can never clear him in one life, I run into one of his mine bombs, or a bullet swipes me. The dragon boss in gunbird is a pain. You have to start moving left or right before he even starts shooting to avoid the stream in the middle of the spread. Once you figure out the timing of when you have to start moving, it's easy to beat with out a bomb. I have 1cc only the first loop of Gunbird; the second half is too fast for Valnus (at least for me anyways
).

Am I the only one who thinks the GIV boss rush is actually the HARDEST in the series?gs68 wrote:Tetran was already crazy enough. Jupiter in Batsugun is by far my most hated. If he wasn't such a pain in the butt I probably would have 1CC'ed Batsugun a month earlier than I did.
Surprisngly, I did have anywhere near the trouble I thought I would beating Ground of the Galaxy, learned his patterns pretty fast. It was getting to the final boss with at least two ships in stock which was the tough part.

I hate Gradius Gaiden's Heaven's Gate. He is often the reason I can't complete a second-loop run. All those tightly packed lasers, arggghhh, precision dodging, arrggghhh. !@#$%^& you Heaven's Gate.
"Sooo, what was it that you consider a 'good salary' for a man to make?"
"They should at least make 100K to have a good life"

Yes! I hate him. He's the reason I can't get passed stage 7 in boss rush mode. Those bastard bouncing purple lasers.freddiebamboo wrote:Envy from batrider is a joke, I truly, truly hate that boss
And whoever it was that commented on Iron Casket on 1-4 of Strikers 1945 Plus - I hate all 1-4 bosses in "plus".
