I've noticed that in the PS1 Raiden Project - Raiden I, that if I lose a turn and the plane did not have a fairy that was captured that I still seem to keep all the medals I have collected.
But I recall that the arcade cabinet didn't keep the medals once a turn was lost, unless that plane had a fairy that was captured.
I think the Genesis Raiden Trad version works the same way as the arcade cabinet, though the Genesis version only has the start back mode enabled and there is no instant respawn. (And just what difficulty are Normal and Hard supposed to represent? Normal is already way faster shots than PS1 Raiden Project Raiden I on General.)

It'd be interesting to do a comparision to a real Raiden II PCB circa 1993 to the PSX port of Raiden Project (and see if medals are kept/lost if the fairy icon is picked up or not). Of course Seibu Kaihatsu also manufactured a "Raiden II - New Version" conversion PCB kit circa 1996. Hmmm, sounds intriguing indeed.

I have a Raiden II 1993 board and you do not keep medals after death.
