Psikyo Shooting Collections - How accurate are they?

Post by Chacranajxy »

So I'm looking to pick up some of Psikyo's games and right now, I'm eyeing the PS2 compilations that came out in Japan. But I'm wondering how good the port quality is, since it's something you obviously can't take for granted with any compilation. So... how is it? Are the ports for stuff like Sengoku Blade better than prior releases on the Saturn?

There's a short write-up about each of them (and a bunch of others) here.

The Saturn port of Blade is great and has some decent extras, which is something these sets do not have. I recommend looking for an older port of anything available elsewhere (except for the PS1 port of Gunbird).

speaking of ports, is it just me or does the ship movement in the Saturn port of DDP seems a little faster? I suspect that maybe it's just me sucking at using a controller.

The worst PS2 Psikyo package is the Strikers 1945 I and II, which has an annoying continue scheme.
Upon dying, keeping the fire button pressed will immediately trigger the continue.
I would like the get the retard who let this happen and punch him in the face.

Sengoku Ace/Blade is ace. :)
The Gunbird package seems to be nice, though I haven't spent time with it yet.
I can't say anything about Sol Divide/Dragon Blaze, I decided to get the separate PAL games (both offer 60Hz).

LOL! This is v.annoying. I just had a similar rant on a different forum about the leaning mechanic being removed from fear2.

Basically, the older ports are better in all but one case, because they have non-interlaced display and more extras.

Gunbird and Gunbird 2
Get the Saturn and DC ports, respectively.
Avoid the PS version of Gunbird as it does not have tate mode.

Strikers 1945 and Strikers 1945 II
Get the Saturn or PS versions

Sengoku Ace and Sengoku Blade
Saturn version of Sengoku Blade (which is a great game) is much better, but obviously Sengoku Ace is exclusive to PS2. If money is not an issue I would get both.

Sol Divide and Dragon Blaze
Saturn and PS versions of Sol Divide are better, but obviously Dragon Blaze is a PS2 exclusive.
Most people hate Sol Divide, so if you're unlikely to spend much time with it, you'll probably just wanna get the PS2 version and be done with it.

So for Dragon Blaze and Sengoku Ace, how close are the compilations to the arcade originals? I was planning to get Sengoku Blade for the Saturn anyway because of the extra shit, but yeah... I might also get the compilation if the Ace port is actually good

They play fine, but the graphics have been upscaled, so they look blurrier and a lot less crisp than what the PCBs looks like on an arcade screen.

Well, I love the Psikyo games and have previously owned the PAL versions but sold them off ages ago. Now I want the NTSCJ originals, but my current setup involves a 50 inch plasma, yoko mode. Just want to know if these games look blurry with a filter (acceptable to me) or horribly pixellated 240p graphics forced into 480i with no ability to tone down the jaggies?

I can't play the Last Blade or Orochi collections on PS2 cos they behave like this, and have no filter to save them :(

PS I'm using component cables.
