Which button layout do you use?

Post by mesmer »

Seems to me like there are two styles:

A: Image

B: Image

A: being the astro city type. Look at a 2l6b panel:

B: would be the newer blast/net city style:

Which one do you prefer, and why?
I usually play A for no reason. I'll try B soon.

Or do you remap the buttons completely, and don't follow an 'arcade' layout? Whenever I play ports, I crosscheck with MAME, or somehow figure out what the arcade layout is.

B, the reason beeing that most shumps only need 3 buttons at max, which I find more comfortable to access with the B-layout.
If I'm playing a 4-button shmup, fourth button would be the o-button on those images.

I think I used a variation of the second, except autofire and shot were right next to each other. I use a Saturn Pad now though. My button set up on that is B: Autoshot, Y: Shot, C: Bomb/Fourth option, R: Bomb/Fourth option. C and R depend on the game itself.

I use a variation of A type only I have rapid fire and bomb switched.

1. shot
2. rapid
3. bomb

keep my index on shot. middle finger on rapid and pinky on bomb. for 4 button games I keep my thumb on 4 for whatever purpose it serves.

I guess it depends on game. Mostly A type, (Shot) (Bomb) (Rapid).

For whatever reason I have B type setup on Muchi Muchi Pork, I think Galuda2 as well but that's because it's using 4 buttons.

Usually A, but in button heavy shmups I tend to place autofire at my thumb for comfort, since my thumb is neither suited for mashing or quick reactions.

I tend to use the A type. My fingers just rest comfortably that way. When playing games where I have to use my thumb for the fourth button I tend to find it uncomfortable due to my thumb resting on its side, but if I make the layout more like a Neo Geo MVS where I use my pinky I find it better. At the moment I'm trying to think of any shmups I have that even use four buttons. :lol:

The only thing to add on a wierd variation for neogeo specifically on a normal jap 6 button layout:

Normal:
"1 2 3
4 5 6

Neogeo:

" 2 3 4
1 2 3

Allows me to play 4 button row for kof etc. and a simple 1,2,3 line for metal slug etc. without any rewiring.

I use Neo Geo/Egret II style, which looks something like this:

Code: Select all

              2   3   4
Stick     1

*BOOM*

I use the 2P style button layout on my HRAP 1. I actually have grown to love it. I like that the button rows are vertically placed instead of slanted like 1P button layout. ...So I use the outer buttons in this case well.

That pic reminds me of that one Beatmania controller photoshop with 7 turntables and one button. (instead of 7 buttons and one turntable)

Now, if you're a super hardcore fan of "tap dodging", you should play shmups with a drum controller. :P

This is the layout I usually use, as well. 1 is the tap shot, 2 is whatever special thing the game needs, 3 is auto-shot and 4 is bomb because it's less likely to be hit on accident.

For a stick (Hori Real Arcade Pro v1 or SF4 TE R1):

Code: Select all

                  2   3
    Stick     1   -   -
              4

1 = Shot
2 = Bomb
3 = Auto
4 = Other (hyper/form change etc)
Middle finger for triggering bombs, thumb for activating hypers/form change etc. Comfortable when the buttons are close together, like on my two sticks.
