great arcade style shmups??

Post by Martijn »

Hello guys,

There are actually three shoot 'em ups which I really enjoyed: Raptor (PC - DOS), Cho Ren Sha 68k (PC - Windows) and Aero Fighters (SNES).
I especially like Cho Ren Sha and Aero Fighters, they give you some arcade feeling.
Are there any other shoot 'em ups which are like these games? With a very similar gameplay?

Oh I know, there are many shoot 'em ups, but there's only a few good games of this kind.

Thank you in advance!

well, if you like Aero Fighters and have other systems, can't go wrong with Sonic Wings Special (basically, a compilation/rework of the arcade series, available on Sat & PS1), Strikers 1945 (Sat & PS1, and Strikers 1945 II (Sat & PS1, ps1 runs with slowdown). the Raidens are also really great, although they don't play the same (strictly speaking).

for more info on Strikers and Gunbird click here.
I have no sig whatsoever.

Well, strictly speaking, many shmups have an "arcade feel," since a lot of them originated in the arcades, heh heh.

In any case, if you liked Aero Fighters you might want to try Psikyo's games (Strikers 1945, Gunbird, etc.), as their style is much the same.

i'd say definately start with gunbird which can be had easily and cheaply on the ps2 in the gunbird collection pack. gunbird 2 also comes with it, is pretty damn great, but is also an absolute beast of a credit muncher. i'd imagine a 1cc of the second game takes some real devotion

I agree with BulletMagnet. You'd probably love Psikyo's shooters if you're a fan of Aero Fighters. If you have a DC, you could maybe start off by trying to pick up Gunbird 2. Still one of my all time favs. I'd recommend trying to play Aero Fighters 2 for Neo Geo if possible, since you're a fan of the SNES version. Otherwise, there are *so* many great arcade shooters out there. Dreamcast, and Saturn (among other systems) have amazing shooters. :)
