Shmup Haiku

Post by NoboruWataya »

Impossible as
It is to no miss Donpachi
Guwange is much harder.

I wish life had a
Second loop, though I'm not good
Enough to loop it.

I played this game. For
Hours and hours, but I never
Got the hang of it.

Three to get started (I'm assuming you pronounce Donpachi as Don-pach).

Hmm...is it pronounced "gwanj," "goo-wahnj," or "goo-wahn-geh?"

Love the Tracer Bullet avatar, btw. I'll toss in one or two just for the heck of it...

Where did my ship go?
Then again, where's the background?
Bullets cover all!

I'm trying to make
A haiku of shooter games
why I cannot rhyme?

it's been a long day
my eyes blurr, too slow to dodge
the pink spam above
This causes to me a sensation of badness. - Stormwatch

Those glowing bullets
Spell certain doom; remember,
You must shoot the core!
Some men dream of fortunes,
others dream of cookies.

Aim for the top score,
Even if you lack the skill.
One can only try.

(A little bit hazy on my syllables, haven't written creatively for a while.)

For Gamestop...

You fucking lame prick,
I won't reserve Madden now.
Not ever my friend.

For my girlfriend...

I love you baby,
and I'll be to bed soon, but,
it's the second loop!

I had this one as a sig for a while, but damned if I know if it's in the correct form.

Above me I see
Snowflakes floating down
Like bullets of pink
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Konami shmups lend themselves well to poetry, I guess:

Vic Viper darts in,
Its lasers pierce, flesh gives way
And the blob is dead.

Michael, unstoppable;
a wayward dot, unnoticed,
Reduces him to spam.

A cycloptic brain,
Its arms flailing. In the eye,
a ripple laser.

---

EDIT: new one:

Booming voice crying
Duh Duh Duh Duh Duh Don Pach
heralds bullet hell.
Some men dream of fortunes,
others dream of cookies.

Not quite: in a haiku the first line has five syllables, the second seven, and the third five. A few adjustments could probably fix the ones you've already listed though.

I read the Wikipedia entry on Haiku; apparently most modern poets don't bother with the 5-7-5 rule, as it doesn't really reflect the structure of Japanese haiku, and most feel it causes stilted English and arbitrary confines.

Bah, Wikipedia. :P

But yeah, trying to do a "real" haiku in English is more or less impossible anyways, but I tend to like to stick with the syllables anyway, for a semi-respectable "gai-ku." ;)

Well, think of it as Shmup Beatnik Prose, then. :D

Hehe, gai-ku, that's good. You just come up with that? Really what we're doing is writing scifi-ku.
