Baryon - Future Assault

Post by IseeThings »

I just emulated this, has anybody actually played it before? Seems kinda rare.

Baryon.. ARCADE? Very cool!

I only had the demo for the DOS version way back when. I'm actually not surprised it made the leap to arcades... it always struck me as pretty high quality for a PC shootemup (although looking back, it is rough around the edges.)

Then again, a lot of the Korean game demos you could find in the 90's were usually several notches above the standard shareware stuff.

Some of the graphics in this actually look really impressive. The bullet patterns from what I've seen in the video are rather boring in appearance (sameo repeated for most of two stages eh) but it looks pretty and genuinely fun to play.

Thunder Wave bombs FTW. I've always wanted to make a shmup using my Armageddon Wave element from Burning Sand, one day I'll make just that and this game has given me further inspiration to do so.

Doesn't surprise me, afaik that's just some dodgy hacked up version of MAME or FBA (probably MAME, the FBA guys said their 68020 core doesn't work properly with the game, no scrolling)

The hardware is straightforward and easily something the xbox could manage.

and yes this is my (Haze's) account here.

Looks really good, especially for a Korean shooter. Seems like it has a bit of Gekirindan timetravel thing going on as well.

Looks like it'd be fun to play around with for a bit.

Are the explosions really that transparent or is it just Youtube being terrible again?

Tyrian had neat transparencies. Alpha blending wasn't uncommon on the PC hardware around that time.
Reminds me of Shienryu, this.
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

I frameblended the video down to 30fps (otherwise YouTube drops frames and it looks worse, things vanish)

There are no 'real' transparencies, just flickering of sprites on/off every frame, which on an original arcade CRT looks damn close to transparent which is why it was a commonly applied technique on hardware that didn't natively support alpha (NeoGeo, CPS etc.)

Cool, I use that effect a few times in my own games.

Some of the faults in this game (high score not resetting to 0 when continuing) are hilarious but overall I actually found this quite enjoyable. Looking forward to seeing this in a new Shmupmame release for the rapidfire support, then we can see how well those lasers you get when you fire really really fast actually work.

Yeah the rapid fire thing was the main thing that annoyed me with it.

You have to hit that button so quickly you can only do it for a few seconds at a time, and it seems inconsistent, it's almost as if it were designed to have a rapid fire button on the cabinet, or they know the laser is so powerful they don't want you overusing it.

Believe it or not, highscore not resetting to 0 is considered 'good' by the majority of people, it's just the hardcore shooter fans here who don't like it. One time I was doing gamedev before we had bug reports *because* we reset the score to 0, and had to change it.

Thread split, the discussion related to the score resetting after continuing is now here.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Very dynamic and fast, nice explosions, but UGLY design and sooo repetitive... It's light years away from a good japanese shooter!
