What stylus is best for iOS shmups?

Post by szycag »

I was about to buy a cheap $2 stylus for my iPod Touch until I read reviews saying you had to press hard if you were dragging a lot. I saw a lot of recommendations for the Pogo stylus and I was wondering if anyone has used it. Also what about stuff like Fling? I know it's only for iPad, but I'm sure others are curious.

thanks guys. :?

I hate the smearing feeling playing with my finger, and it blocks the screen a lot more than I think a stylus would. Wish it worked with a DS stylus because that's the perfect size and weight for me.

Funny you´re making a thread about this because I JUST bought a stylus for the specific purpose of playing iOS shmups and other touch-based games like Dungeon Raid:

http://www.amazon.com/Just-Mobile-AluPe ... 672&sr=8-1

Yes, it´s expensive. But boy is it good. I have never tried a different capacitive stylus but from what I´ve read most of them are quite inconsistent with their reponsiveness.

This one here is chunky, but surprisingly accurate. It even makes sketching on iOS possible (I hate drawing with my finger, it reminds me of the early days of Kindergarten).

And man, it feels so good with DDP:R or Espgaluda. I feel much more like I´m in control the whole time, to the point where I forget I´m playing it on a touchscreen. Not to mention that I get a nasty, pre-RSI feeling in my hands after playing any touch game for a longer period. You have to apply slight pressure, but that tip is actually soft and flexible (filled with air). It doesn´t make much sense in the general touchscreen user interface, but on apps that use a lot of dragging motions it´s ten times more comfortable.

I find the DS stylus way too skinny. This one here reminds me of the big aluminum pencils I used in art class. Oh, and it also gets rid of the problem of your finger being either too dry (making dragging rather stressfull for your hand) or too sweaty.

...

And on a sidenote:
I use a Wacom not only for drawing but instead of a mouse as well. Pen input is the only pointing peripheral I find comfortable for longer periods of time. I´m starting to wonder if anybody ever really thought about whether or not finger input is actually ergonomic. Sure, for checking mails on your smartphone it´s fine, but now with all these tablets coming out that are supposed to be mainly for websurfing and stuff like that this might become an issue. For instance, I hate having to constantly do a dragging motion when I´m scrolling through a thread on my iPod Touch. I wish there were onscreen buttons for that. :?

Oh, and this one seems to be pretty good as well:

I just wouldn´t go with the absolute cheapest ones to be honest.

There's loads of iOS shmups I love that are only spoiled by my damn hand cramping up or getting in the way. I'll have to think about investing in one of these.
