What game? Octagonal ship that rotates 360 degrees

Post by FTK »

I played an arcade shooter in the early nineties that used an octagonal ship that could rotate 360 degrees. It was still top-down format, advancing upwards. I've never known the name of this game, and I'd love to play it again.

Useless history:
I was at a family vacation, I was between 8 and 11 years old, and it was a freaking HOT summer. The "game room" at the "resort" had a pool table and two arcade games. One of the first days I was there a guy came to get the change from the game and left the door open! There was a key inside so I took it... I racked up credit upon credit, and when I finished playing I'd lock the door to avoid bringing attention to it. Great times.

Welcome my friend,

I can't recall what game you are talking about. I am guessing that others didn't reply because they don't know the game either. (I have my share of games that nobody else I know ever heard about too)

Post in other threads :)

It sounds familiar, but it could also be suggested memory.

I think the big thing to look for would be multi-directional firing.

Thanks for taking the time to help. It's none of the 3 you suggested. The ship is definitely octagonal, and it has depth. I remember the graphics being pretty good, SNES good, maybe a little better. I'm pretty sure the screen only scrolls forward when you fly forward. I can't remember if the ship remains centered on screen though... Boy, this will be a tough one.

What is octagonal?

You see, not all of us are from US/GB/AU. Not all of us are adults.
Octagonal? Eight sides something? what?

He is saying the ship has eight sides. Like an American stop sign.

Thanks again for the help!

Ok:

The ship is shaped like a stop sign.
It is a flying ship, not a tank.
The view is top down.
The year the game was made is probably very late 80's or early nineties. The game used a traditional joystick, i.e. pacman.
The ship can fly in all directions, but I don't think the screen scrolls left to right, only up.

Thanks, my apparently international fellow shmup lovers!

Sounds like a variation on Asteroids, but what do I know....

The enemies are mechanical. No rocks, no living breathing beasts.

Time Pilot '84 has mechanical type enemies. The ship here can be turned 8 ways, but the screen will scroll with you instead of just upward and your ship stays centered. Some of the ground targets are stop-sign shaped and so is the enemy mothership. The graphics in TP84 fall midway between Sega Master System and SNES quality.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Sounds a lot like Kenta Cho's Gunroar, but that came out just last month.

On a similar note to your story, I once went to the bus station in my old town -- I can't recall why, I've never used a bus, I don't think anyone I know has ever used a bus -- and they had a big room full of arcade games. A lot of them didn't have locked coin places, so I pilfered the few quarters I could find. There you have it, my incredible descent into the criminal underworld, at such a young, tender age no less.

If it were not for the “It is a flying ship, not a tank” point on your description, I would say the game was Xenon, because everything else you said matches. Also, in Xenon you could trasnform from tank to ship...

Thanks everyone for your help. I think a picture was taken of me playing that game, so I'm going to go through storage and see if I can find it. I let you know if I find out what it is.

And didn't Xenon get a release in arcades, at least over here? The guts were basically an ST in a cab if I remember rightly. Remember reading about it in ACE mag...
