Oddly, first time I heard about it was a couple of years ago from my friend who as a kid was the type Sega probably had in mind when they developed Sonic. One of the first games (possibly the very first) he bought for his PS3 was KillZone 2. You get the picture. Not the type who recommends ultra-obscure 16-bit oddities such as Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City on a regular basis.
The more glad I am the game is actually not awful. If you are no stranger to the bleak atmosphere and somewhat rigid controls of Super Castlevania IV, you might enjoy it. Actually I find such controls easier to put up with here as the character is well animated (better than playable dudes in pre-SotN Castlevanias). Thankfully Jordan's attacks are immediate and rapid if necessary, which prevents the combat from being too cold a bitch. The music wouldn't be out of place in a Metroid game. Interestingly, some sprites appear to be pre-rendered in 3D, but the graphics look consistent overall.
What I dislike is the way backgrounds scroll back a bit when you stop (as if the cameraman was drunk and thus unable to keep up with your actions). Moreover, seems like losing all energy can break the game (at least on pro). It respawns you at some checkpoint without a key needed to progress further which makes things easy to screw up irreversibly for you (as far as I can tell).

Screw the haters. I've had this damn game since it came out and I've always loved it. I find it terribly underrated, and extremely odd at that. It's really a bizarre game that plays well. I even had the poster hung up at my last pad

This is one of those weirdo games I've always been curious about, but never got around to trying...it is indeed supposedly better than the shameless product placement would suggest.
