It really annoys me how homebrew developers make a bigger deal over a port of DK than a well done original game. It also annoys me that nobody made a post against this practice on AtariAge.

I mean if you find it fun sure that's all well and good, but it's saddening to me that a lot of people won't even attempt to expand their horizons and try stuff that they might like a lot. I've tried turning people on to other games like that in the past, and there's always a strange sense of intimidation for trying a new game and *gasp* losing at it.

I've tried turning people on to other games like that in the past, and there's always a strange sense of intimidation for trying a new game and *gasp* losing at it.

I used to play almost exclusively Dota 2, with (relatively) brief excursions into a couple other games such as Path of Exile and Warframe, for a year or so, and League of Legends for half a year before that. What finally convinced me to quit Dota (because my plummeting grades somehow wasn't enough) was me launching Team Fortress 2 one day and realizing I was having more fun with that than I had had with Dota in months. From there I ended up returning to the games I had played before LoL, such as Touhou, which led me searching for more shmups and Kancolle for some reason and here I am now. I don't regret playing Dota entirely since I learned plenty of lessons from it, but I did play it too much and probably for too long, and too much at the exclusion of other games, and I sometimes wonder what I missed out on thanks to all the time I dumped into Dota. In fact I kind of feel the same way about shmups in my life right now so I've been trying to spend a bit of time with some other games (currently Disgaea which I've already played before, but maybe Etrian Odyssey 3 later, as well as actually trying to get past the first few levels of some roguelikes).

I don't really have much to add to what you said, but thought I'd share because it reminded me of that. I do think it's worth noting, however, that when I quit Dota it actually wasn't for new stuff, but rather for old things I was already familiar with, which later encouraged me to reach out for other things. The effort of learning something unfamiliar and having to wait until it clicks with you (which may or may not even happen), is off-putting when you could be having a known amount of fun right now with games you already know. I'm still not sure how one goes from that state to actually pursuing something new even though I've gone through that process myself before. Hell, even now I'm playing Disgaea when I could be playing EO3. What is it in a game or its players that encourages one not only to play that game, but to seek out other (similar) games? What makes one want more, but not just from the same game? Knowing the answer to that might actually be useful for developing a shmup...

Got to the end of CD 1 of Saturn Tengai Makyou. Aaaaand, to make a long story short, that is the end on a US Saturn.

Since I have Saturn USB I thought I'd just transfer my save file over and continue in the emulator. Turns out, the emulator has no way to "open the door." *facepalm*

My review of (1 CD of) this game: The battle system is awfully basic, the plot never really goes anywhere, the ending stinks.
