Psyvariar Complete for PS2 (PAL region) questions
Psyvariar Complete for PS2 (PAL region) questions
Okay, I've been reading a bit on this version of Psyvariar, since I'd love to play the first (which a lot of people seem to claim is FAR BETTER than the original, I'll be the judge I suppose).
Anyway, my question is this:It says the game has 50 and 60hz modes. How would I ensure the game starts up in 60hz mode so that I can play it since I'll be using an NTSC region system?
The reason I'm looking at the UK version, by the way, is it's the only version of Complete I can find for cheap, everyone else only carries Medium Unit or Extend Edition, not Complete.

You don't. You have to go the option menu and set it to 60hz every time you boot up the game.ForteMP3 wrote: Anyway, my question is this:It says the game has 50 and 60hz modes. How would I ensure the game starts up in 60hz mode so that I can play it since I'll be using an NTSC region system?
Oh, and "Extend Edition" is the sub-title of the XBox port of Psyvariar 2, PS2's port is called "Ultimate Final". The original Psyvariars are "Medium Unit" and "Revision", which are both included in the Complete sets.

Ah, right, my mistake...There's just so many versions. >.>
On another note, is there anywhere I COULD buy the NTSC-J version of the game (every place I've checked is sold out), or would I have to settle for the individual Medium Unit and Revision versions? Also, with the Complete set, is it two DVDs or one with both games?
EDIT:Gah, I'm so used to typing Extend Edition, no idea why. >.<;

Okay, one last question, because I TOTALLY forgot to ask. Will Psyvariar PAL display properly on an NTSC system and TV when I first boot it up? I'm worried about whether or not it'll be playable on an NTSC setup since you can't set 60hz mode on startup, I've also heard PAL 60hz uses a different color encoding scheme than NTSC 60hz, so this could also be a problem.

I dunno, this copy was pretty much less than 20 bucks with shipping, that's pretty cheap.
However, my question remains:Will this work on an NTSC TV/PS2? (Keeping in mind I have HDLoader, so region checks will NOT be an issue)

In worst case, you won't see anything. But if you want, we can just tell you the exact button presses you need to get over to the option menu and change the game to 60hz.Capt. if i remember correctly you can set the screen mode to 60hz, save the options and then the game will load into 60hz every time. that's what i do on my pal version. so basically as suggested by another, get one of us to give you the button presses to do it once for each game and then you should be fine.
Nope, it doesn't save the 60hz option. You have to set it every time you boot the game.sjewkestheloon wrote:if i remember correctly you can set the screen mode to 60hz, save the options and then the game will load into 60hz every time. that's what i do on my pal version. so basically as suggested by another, get one of us to give you the button presses to do it once for each game and then you should be fine.
I don't think I've ever seen a PAL game that saves that option, but most ask about it right at the boot-up, so it isn't really necessary either.

Re: Psyvariar Complete for PS2 (PAL region) questions
I'm bumping this thread because it's about technical aspects of the PS2 port (PAL version in particular).
My message to the people who complain about the game's visuals: in screen options set AFF (anti-flicker) to 0. The blur induced by it at default 75 is worse than the flickering in my opinion. At 0 the textures look way better.
How the arcade original fares compared to the port, by the way? I suppose it runs in lower resolution, without interlacing and the PS2 texture streching. Is that so? MAME says its native resolution is 480x640, but it looks like upscaled from less than that whilst running in MAME.
Finally, I'm not picking on anyone, but why the addition of roll button in the PS2 Psyvariars is considered a flaw by some is beyond me. Without it the game would be broken for those of us who don't own a stick. Think of it as an extra game mode and get over it.
In other news, I'm FINALLY kind of getting a hang of Medium Unit. I'm still not sure if I really like it (when delicious buzz chaining happens it feels almost too easy, like a phony shmup of sorts, and when dying happens it feels ridiculous, like getting killed by a slow bullet in Raiden). I mean, thus far only a couple of bosses' confetti patterns got interlaced with fast shots, Psikyo way, posing a threat typical of shmups. Maybe the roll button does break the balance somehow, but at least the game's playable with a pad.
I'm not into the other bullet scrappers I played, but Medium Unit is unique enough to keep me intrigued.

Ico PAL saves 60 Hz and it's quite possibly the only PS2 game doing this.Ghegs wrote:I don't think I've ever seen a PAL game that saves that option, but most ask about it right at the boot-up, so it isn't really necessary either.

Re: Psyvariar Complete for PS2 (PAL region) questions
For Obiwanshinobi,
Both Psyvariar Medium Unit and Psyvariar Revision G-Cards running on the Taito G-Net mobo run at a crisp 60 fps arcades-spec framerate. You're right about none of the interlacing and stretching issues that the Taito G-Card versions of Psy-MU & Psy-R have compared to the PS2 ports of Psyvariar Complete has.
The G-Card of Psy-R does save superplays + high scores & high score intials directly to the G-Card itself for posterity. The G-Card of Psy-Mu only saves high scores & high score intials at best (no superplays capability nor saving of them whatsoever). Plus the "Roll" functionality is activated by furiously moving the arcade joystick back & forth. The PS2 Psyvariar Complete port adds the simple "Roll" button command to excute it at will and simply stay in place without moving at all.

Re: Psyvariar Complete for PS2 (PAL region) questions
Yeah, I know you can still roll properly in Complete Edition with a stick alone. The framerate seems perfectly fine as well. It's by no means a horrible port.
Although normally I don't like such clicky-clacky contaminations in platformers (even the mighty Castlevania: SotN) and shmups, I imagine playing Psyvariar with a stick feels more "visceral" and natural. I do wonder how it would play with a keyboard, but my PC runs it at like 40% of the original speed.
Oh dear, now I'm doing worse than last night, when I really had an issue of "finally getting it". Weird game this.

Re: Psyvariar Complete for PS2 (PAL region) questions
Perhaps I shouldn't have bumped a thread this ancient, but then every other Psyvariar thread I found was about as ancient and it's not like I had anything terribly important to reveal. Just the AFF ratio thing.
I sort of regained my Psyvariar mojo and performed some wicked chaining today.
Complete Edition being as affordable as it is, I couldn't recommend it enough indeed. Was it the very first bullet scrapper? Can't think of any older one.

Re: Psyvariar Complete for PS2 (PAL region) questions
Seems to be main thread for PsyComplete PS2?
I just wanted to ask though
1) Are there any options in game? Looks like you just choose Medium Unit or Revision and that's it.
2) Vibration, how should it work? My impression, it vibrates when you roll which is weird (i thought it should vibrate only when buzz). Speaking of which, i dont have any vibration in Psyvariar Delta on Steam btw (ok thats for another thread)

There are options, obviously including the one for tate. Can't remember about vibration.
Re: Psyvariar Complete for PS2 (PAL region) questions
I have recently played the Japanese stand-alone disc for Psyvariar Medium Unit, but I also did some testing with the European Psyvariar Complete Edition.
From what I could see it's got the very same options, for Medium Unit at least.

Re: Psyvariar Complete for PS2 (PAL region) questions
Maybe it refuses to enable options menu because there is no enough space on memory card? My only guess

Re: Psyvariar Complete for PS2 (PAL region) questions
No need to guess.
Reason is simple, you have to press select when it shows ”press start to start” etc. and then press start again to enter the options menu. You need to press select again to activate start game option.
I guess there is some arcade based reasoning behind that quite illogical UI logic.

Re: Psyvariar Complete for PS2 (PAL region) questions
Ah, i see, thanks. Reminds me of Umihara Kawase Shun, then (in which you need to pause game with start, and bring up menu with select only during that pause - it's weird when you're used to either having menu from start button, or needing only select to get it, but not such combo).
And yeah what you described reminds me "service mode" thing from arcade
