Splatterhouse (Xbox 360/PS3)

Post by Battlesmurf »

I didn't find a thread for this. Lock if there is and I missed it, please :)

I just beat the game today. Bought it on launch- and I do not regret paying near full price for it. I liked the first 2 Splatterhouse games (arcade/Megadrive/TG16) and loved the 3rd (Megadrive/Genesis). This has a ton of nods to those games (among other things). Even occasionally goes into a 2D sidescroller mode. Stays true to the roots as far as the violence go- it has to be one of the more violent games in recent memory.

As for the down sides- there's a few insta-death parts. Not fond of those- but they're not too bad. Loading times (I played with it installed on the HD on 360 even) are still pretty bad at times.

Overall- I really enjoyed it. Give the game bonus points if you like the kind of music here (it's about 50/50 classic type music and metal/rock (?) type stuff) and boobies (you unlock booby pictures). Bonus Bonus points- you unlock the first 3 games in the series by playing through the game. Good Stuff.

Anybody else get a chance to check it out yet?

I bought it at launch....played through a few levels but haven't gotten back to it. I liked what I played though. Fun game, funny at times, and defintely nods to the old-school. Unlocking the originals is a nice touch too.
<@scootnet> if you were a real gamer, you could jerk it to Super Metroid box art

Have they fixed the bugs yet? I stopped playing (PS3 version) when in Chapter 4 or so I drop to some floor, enemies attack, I can't move at all, finally the floor opens and game over. Load saved game -> same result. There was no way around it, so.. FUCK THIS BUGGY PIECE OF SHIT.

(collecting boob photo shreds was nice though)

I got the game at release and even got the pre-order statue. Only thing I hated were the platforming parts with instant kills. The writing blew me away, especially some of the Dr. West scenes.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

Thankfully the unlockable version of the first Splatterhouse is from the arcade, NOT the censored and cut down Turbo Grafx 16 one. You unlock that first and then later you get the Genesis games- Splatterhouse 2 & 3. IIRC these latter two are the USA ones.

'Tis a shame they made Rick look like a goober, complete with high-tops, cut off shorts, and a chain wallet...

I was a hardcore fan of the first games. Of course i looked into the new splattehouse with some expectations.
The old games used to be badass and scary * at least seemed scary to me as a kid. Rick being then that ultra pissed off badass so filled with rage he would go beat to hell out of countless monstrosities with his bare fist, only being helped by the mask. Rick was still human looking wich made the fact that he was beating the crap out of all those things even more badass. The arcade and Genesis music was also an instant classic.

When i looked in the new game it seemed to me it was somewhat turned it into a joke ... Rick being some kind of scrawny dork being puppeted and laughed at by the mask. He just transforms into a barely human half-giant gorilla yet keeps his teenager voice, then goes around doing as the mask tells him with a background of mainstream music. I cant help but feel the game lost all its Badassness and atmosphere. Maybe its just me. I did not actually play the new game Yet i don't feel compelled buying it now, maybe a bit later when cheap used copies will be readily available all over.

This is exactly how I feel. Wish they would have just created a new series rather than make a fool of Rick.

Without spoiling anything-it's not as bad as it seems over the course of the game. I didn't like the high tops and such- but I think it worked out well. In the original splatter house- they were 2 college kids- this fits in better with that I think. The new Splatterhouse is a remake of the 1st one- and Rick starts out pretty reluctant and often questions the mask- but closer to the end of the game he starts saying things the mask would have (and vice versa)- turning a little bit more towards the dark side. It's nice to see- and it's definitely set up to have more games in the series.

Speaking of- anybody know whether or not it was a financial success for the company? I haven't heard anything either way.

As for bugs- I played on the Xbox- I ran into one minor one (I couldn't impale an enemy on a spike a certain way) but it only happened once and was a pretty isolated incident. Hopefully they fixed whatever was up on the PS3 version. If it means anything- you can choose to replay that level over again and not lose anything other than your spot on the level- it's very lenient about keeping skills and items- but I can imagine that would be frustrating.

I've played through it on the Brutal setting. It's not bad, though the Mask's hilarious comments can detract from a horror atmosphere for some- not that I mind though. "He'll feel THAT in the morning... if he has a morning." In this soundtrack, my favorite BGMs are 5FDP's "Dying Breed" and Cavalera Conspiracy's "Must Kill".

The instant kills in some parts of the game (notably, the one rooftop scene with a crumbling floor that can drop you to your doom) are a bit annoying, and that is exacerbated by the long load times. I swear the load screen lasts 30-50 seconds after you die. In Survival mode, I tried to clear the 10 missions just for the achievement- then stuck to time attack play after that. It seems to me that survival ranks are based solely on your clear time.

The 360 version will play on Japanese systems.
