How to learn to read japanese?

Post by Galactik »

I finally pulled the trigger and have a J-360 on its way, so I have committed myself to taking the next step in my Shmup hobby. So I figure it is time that I learn how to read some of the menus that I am going to be facing.

Can anyone give me some advice on where to start to learn the language?

Just take a day or two to memorize the two phonetic alphabets. Game menus will appear mostly in Katakana, with words like "Game Start", "Option", "Shot", "Bomb", "Screen", etc.

The X360 menus will have a few more Kanji but you might only need to remember a few for "Settings" and such.

Yeah, learning Katakana and making sense of their romanized meaning should be your first priority.
After that you can easily learn Hiragana and some simple Japanese terms. Kanji are a whole different story and you first need to learn how they're built and how too conveniently look them up, but for simple game-menu related use you could just try to memorize the ones that are more common in games or, game-options.
