New Blade Runner movie?!

Post by EinhanderZwei »

I've read today that there are solid plans for a Blade Runner sequel, prequel and/or TV series. It's my favorite movie of all time, and hearinog this is good... and at the same time, not. The spin-off, or as I like to call it, add-on (Soldier) was pretty good despite having bad reputation, but I'm afraid that the new BR will be just another summer blockbuster with shaky camera, cheap 3D and Jessica Alba as Rachel. Any thoughts/info on this?

The news site is in Russian, so no point to give the link...

Ugh, no. Let Blade Runner have the dignity to remain a classic that stands alone. I'd rather not see it violated in the same way Star Wars and Indiana Jones have.

I'm afraid that this is no rumor, but actual plan. And an evil one...

God, what he said.

Leave it alone you uninspired money grubbing goons and start hiring some new screenwriters, you know, ones with imagination?

It was a book first, don't get too attached to your adaptation. Feel free to be insensed by the Robocop remake though!

(note: I have never read the book, like the movie a lot, hate everything else Ridley Scott has done apart from Alien).

Blade Runner has virtually nothing in common with Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, besides some of the characters' names and the basic premise of a bounty hunter chasing down rogue androids. They even have entirely contradictory philosophies.

Oh good God, I'm so sick of that shaky camera crap. I want real cinematography, not that handycam crap. It worked for Saving Private Ryan and stuff like Cloverfield, but it's totally overdone. And I'm so sick of Jessica Alba. I don't care if she has a perfect body. She can't act and she's a total doorknob. Put a plastic bag over her head and she probably wouldn't know what to do and would suffocate to death.

I caught the Blade Runner panel at the '07 San Diego Comic Con (you can catch this on youtube) and Ridley Scott said he'd be interested in doing a Blade Runner followup. Way back in the '90s before TEH INTARNETS, I remember reading rumors on the Blade Runner Echo on Fidonet that he wanted to do a followup spiritual successor called Metropolis or something that would be set in the same world, but with different characters.

If there will be a followup to Blade Runner, I want to see CRT monitors, noisy neon signs, and lots of rain and those light-up umbrellas. I don't want to see a futuristic future. I want to see it remain in the 1982 vision of what this decade would have looked like.

I'm not a huge fan, but I liked Gladiator and Black Hawk Down. And Black Rain with Michael Douglas had a similar Blade Runner style of visual presentation of dreary Nagoya, Japan.

Right. In Blade Runner, the Replicants express great amounts of empathy, even more than the actual human characters (what little there were). In the book, the androids will kill people and animals just to watch them die. And speaking of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, there is a stellar comic book adaptation of the novel, and it is pretty much a visual novel with the actual text of Dick's book.

The other thing!

Blade Runner is just perfect as it is. I would rather them leave it alone, or if they want to screw it up just change the title of the movie to "Snatcher."

If Ridley is involved I'll see it. His resume is top notch and his casting is usually spot on. Ridley makes movies that are timeless and I think thats the sort of movie people would like to see in another BR. If it goes the way of Terminator and changes hands i'll miss it. Before another BR comes out we can see the prequel to alien to get some idea where Ridleys thoughts are.

I think I just read an article last night that the Alien prequel is going to be directed by somebody else. It was in an article about Keanu Reeves playing a half-Japanese samurai in an upcoming movie, so I'm not sure if it's accurate or not. I really, really hope Scott will direct the Alien Prequel.

In other news, I read that there will be a prequel to The Thing, and it won't be directed by John Carpenter. It involves the Norweigians who first discover the flying saucer.

Aw man, Scott makes a load of pap half the time. He's got the ability no doubt, but when it's just another contract job he's rarely assed to put much effort in.

I actually think BR could work as a TV series. Just use the setting to explore the possibilities. Don't try to directly be a sequel or anything.

I suppose I would watch a new adaptation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, but honestly it isn't that great a story. So many other great books havn't been adapted or have bad adaptations.

Including quality. BR is way better.

On that note, is there still going to be a Hollywood version of Akira?

Hollywood version of Akira? Can't be worse than the live-action Gundam film...

People should learn what needs to be left alone. Battlestar Galactica was terrible so great, please go remake it and turn it awesome. But no more Blade Runner or Robocop. Original ideas please filmmakers :(

Heh, that reminds me... Cameron is supposed to do a Battle Angel/Gunnm movie eventually. I'm actually vaguely excited for it. Regardless of the quality of the film, it will at least bring more attention to a little known manga that more people should know about.

Yep, that Battle Angel (aka Gunnm in JPN) would've been released about the same time as the Avatar flick did if Cameron hadn't been working on Avatar).

It'd be interesting to see if new weaponry will be introduced besides the usual handguns that the Blade Runners use in their daily line of work.

-------------------

Some of PCE-FX's observations of the 2007 Final Cut version of Blade Runner:

After viewing the Final Cut of BR again, wouldn't the heavy rains be acidic due to the heavy smog/polluted skies of Los Angeles in 2019 A.D. (as shown in the beginning of the film)? Of course, this particular enviromental issue is really never addressed in the film.

Will there be some cool high speed chase scenes involving armed Replicants with stolen spinners and the BRs with their own spinners? That I'd like to see happen -- would've made for an interesting scene/change of pace in the BR film indeed.

A scene showing inside Tyrell Corporation's huge & spacious replicant assembly factory would be cool to see on the big screen...as this wasn't shown in the classic BR film either.

There was suppose to be Zhora's sexy dance with her (artificial) pet boa involving some cool holographic special effects but Warner Bros. didn't pony up the cash for that particular scene so it was not included in the 1982 release of BR...would've been interesting to see if it was completed though.

Ever notice that no proper commercial endorsement credits were given to the companies/corporations that prominently displayed their ads in BR's ending credits? Some of the big name American companies/corporations (that were around back in 1981-1982) such as: Atari, RCA, TDK, Koss, Cola-Cola, Cusinart, etc. definitely do have their highly visable advertising signage up for all to see.

The problem with a lot of movies is that you always go into a movie thinking "They must have learnt by now" only to walk out disappointed again.

The Alien vs Predator franchise was one that sold on the idea rather than its execution. Almost all movies rely heavily on tricking an audience into believing they will see something they won't. I never forget in Alien vs Predator 2 the storyline where a pizza delivery guy is beaten up for fancying another guys woman. That is a story I never thought I'd see in AVP.

This - along with Spielberg, Ridley Scott is one of the most overrated directors of all time. Neither of them have made a decent film in almost 30 years, but both are incredibly successful.

Very true. If the zombies didn't flock to see this garbage Hollywood would have to start making different pictures - it's what happened in the 60's and 70's and look at what we got. Masterpieces every year. What now?

A prequel to Bladerunner sounds awful, but the original wasn't too successful so hopefully it will pass and be left alone.
