Hi All,

I've been collecting arcade games for a while, and have come to the realization that while I appreciate the classics, what I truly love are the 90's-00's arcade era games. With that in mind, I'm going to try to piece together a cabinet that I can throw nothing but some Jamma Shmups in, and I've come here to kind of soak in the scenery and info. Apologies in advance, because I know for a while I'll be asking more questions than anything else.

Happy to be here!

Welcome new members. Great to have you here! Now you've signed up you can get involved! I especially recommend the high score section, where posting scores will really motivate improving at the genre!

And apologies where it took a while to approve your first posts! Now that's done, you can post and such freely.

And on that note; specialmove... I saw you'd made your first post twice, presumably as you didn't see it appear at once (posts only appear once you've had your very first post approved). I've deleted the duplicate, just so you know.

Thanks for joining us!

Hello, been a lifelong fan of shmups but only really started to take them seriously in the past few years. Looking to dig in and finally 1CC something.

Greetings, I am S_Fang and I like videogames since I was a young lad. Among the genres, shooters are my favorite, especially the Vertical, Horizontal and platformer variety.
Recently, my passion for this genre was rekindled by watching Slowbeef's videos about Crimson Clover, as well replaying with the MAME and its great advantage to not spend a single coin for playing them. I'm not lying, I use a lots of those for finishing them like a filthy casual.

I joined the forum to expand my knowledge on this genre as well improving and sharping my gaming's skills in reflex and memory.

Hiya.

I think I got into shmups firstly by being a Saturn owner and discovering its import catalogue. Fell in love with the likes of Radiant Silvergun, Thunder Force, Gradius and Darius. From there I dived into MAME and tried out pretty much every notable shmup, adding a whole bunch of others to my list of favourites.

I was actually a member here before, but lost both the account info and email used to register. The forum only goes back as far as 2005 though I thought I was here before that. Was there a crash? I participated in the Best Shmup Vote one year and remember Thunder Force III was right near the top. Shocked to see it languishing in an honourable mentions pile now. How times and tastes change!

I forgot to do this when I first joined forum, so, Im doing it now

the introduction post

hi all, Im in my 30s, I love books, music, movies, and games, obv
I love rpgs, shmups, fps, tbs, adventures (no particular order, I love them all the same) - I love good games, no matter what the genre is

I was first introduced to shmups in mid 90s, at my local arcades, which had 3 shmups, in 3 original cabs, Flying Shark, Fighting Hawk and Capcom's 1942

war ended in ex Yugoslavia (Bosnia - Europe), so consoles started to arrive in our country, namely, PlayStation, so, I forgot everything about shmups, and I moved to PlayStation and mostly PC games

and then, few years back, I remembered how much I loved playing shmups back then, and decided to check all of PS/SS/PCE/MD and SFC library of games for any shmups that I might like (few thousand of games); also, I decided to not go into 8bit systems, as they lack proper AV signals - RGB natively, or had any good arcade sticks for them; so I narrow it down to a few PS/SS shmups that I liked and decided to buy them in physical form, on a disc, I dont like DRM :D

as I am not into SGs, and dont have money for a cab - I plan to make my own TATE/YOKO setup, with consoles and CRT TV, hopefully sometime this year, when I move to my new place, and figure out what kind of setup I could make

Im not a fan of bullet hell shmups, but I do like Batsugun; for me, Batsugun is a perfect mix of old style shmups and newer, bullet hell shmups

my favorite shmup is Raiden DX, and my favorite run and gun (as I do see them as a similar genres) is Metal Slug

list of my shmup/shooting/run and gun games as of now, is >

SFC:
Assault Suits Valken
KiKi KaiKai: Nazo no Kuro Mantle
Wild Guns

SS:
Batsugun
Metal Slug
Sengoku Ace Episode II
Cotton 2
Shienryu

PS:
Raiden DX
Strikers 1945

and thats all folks :D

Welcome all! Do come in and make yourself at home! We'll pop some more logs on the fire and talk shmups until the small hours.

(Feeling rather wintery, and the wife has been chopping logs with abandon today, so I'm a little geared up for an open fire. Thus this slightly strange welcome!)

My wife insists she loves the sight of a man chopping wood, but since her brother got her an axe for Christmas (our newish place has open fires; it's not that the family get each other weapons!) I've not got a hope of a look in.

HI there,

I'm Darth Nuno from Belgium
I'm a long time arcade collector, mostly exclusively old 80's games era, but recently got the virus from modern shmups games.
I'm especially huge fan of Darius Burst, and I see there are some players here, so this could be a nice place for scoring & chatting about such games ;-)
See you on the board. 8)

Hi there,

I like playing shmups occasionally, I'm not particularly good but I find it fun to blow up stuff sometimes. I appreciate cute girls, this is why I'm particularly fond of doujin series like Suguri. I'm looking forward to reading your posts, news and stuff like that.

This reminds me of my friends mother. He asked her what she wanted for her 60th birthday and she replied a chainsaw. He said are you going to cut me up in my sleep? But he did buy it for her, she wanted to trim some trees in the yard. Strange seeing a little old lady out there on the ladder.

Anyway this is my hello post.

I have been a lurker since 2008 reading articles about arcarde hardware. I mostly fighting games and old retro 80s stuff (I just hit 40 so I grew up with them). I never thought to join as I am not mainly shmups focused. However I find that there is a large core of hardware knowledge here that I have come to depend on, so I figured I should join in.

Hi all!

I remember being a member here many years ago back in high school, posting scores in games like Battle Bakraid and Hotdog Storm, heh. Anyways, I stopped playing shmups for a while because I moved on to other games, but now I'm out of grad school and the itch is back. I recently saw Prometheus' guide to practicing shmups, and I think I'm going to give it a go with Ketsui.

Greetings!

Been on here for a while, but never really posted. As a member from other arcade forums, I've always been interested in shooters as a kid and into my adult life. Some may know me from the Neo-Geo.com site, others may know me as Sgt. Jamma on our site http://www.thearcadehunters.com. Whether it's console or arcade, shmups consume a great deal of my personal gaming time.

Hi there,

Nihonmasa from Switzerland.
I started gaming on arcade 10 years ago, stopped twice already and I'm back at it ^^

I've always loved shmups, so to start over again I took twinkle star sprite and Esp Galuda.
I do have a few other ones on X360, but the feeling is not the same.

I'll be really interested in learning how to improve my scores, tips etc ^^

Hey all,

I've been lurking here for a while and finally decided to get off my ass and post. Neo-geo.com regulars will probably recognize me from there. I mainly play and collect Mega Drive, Super Nintendo and Neo Geo games. Shmups have been my favorite genre since I first got into arcade gaming in the mid to late 80s. I generally prefer the older games but I like some of the newer stuff too. Anyways, I look forward to reading and posting on the forum.

Cheers,

Nick

Hi from France!

I'm s3phy (pronounced sephy). I'm a "light" shmup player, I started with Mushihimesama and it's still my favorite shmup :) My hobbies include fixing arcade machines, I have a few upright european generic cabs that I'm working to fix. If you are on french forums you may have already seen me... Same if you went to Stunfest (except last year) as I have been attending since 2007 and helping with the staff since 2010 8)

I think I'll mostly lurk around here and not post much (I'm already following way too much different forums!) but hey who knows :)

Hi everyone,

I am building a modern indie shmup-like game that is destined for the Steam/XBLA/PSN markets.

I grew up on Lifeforce and U.N. Squadron. More recently I have been inspired by Einhander, Silvergun, Ikaruga and the peculiar Philosoma. As part of my research for the game, I have gotten back into 3rd-6th generation consoles and this rich genre. I'm not a very good player, but I love the clarity and accessibility of shmup design, and I'd like to meet some folks that might be interested in friendly collaboration, or even some (design-minded) play-testing.

Hello Shmuppers from the entire world,

Let me introduce myself very briefly : Mako (but the name was already taken here, so I'll go by SHIROI),
a 37-year-old casual shmupper and bullet lover.
Just like a lot of people of my generation, shmups are part of my first really exciting video games moments.
It's been a few years now that I've started to use my gamepad again.
For nostalgic and passion reasons.
And to add a little extra fun to this, I decided and elbowed myself into creating my own video game.
But I'll talk about that in the dedicated topic.
Bye y'all !

Hello strangers.

I've ignored this genre for most of my life, but a year or so ago I tried the Touhou games and quickly 1cc'd them all on hard, and then 6, 7, and 8 on lunatic. It's just so damn satisfying to memorize a colorful pattern and gracefully weave through bullets while that wonderful music plays. I also tried Crimzon Clover and with that, I knew I had to get deeper into the genre. I'm finding the CAVE games way too hard to get used to compared to CC and Touhou, so I'll avoid them for now in favor of Gundemonium Recollection.

Cool music, buildup to exciting flashy bosses, simple controls, and challenging gameplay seem to be what attracts me to these games.

Also, these games should not be called shoot them ups, but rather shoot them downs, because you shoot all the enemies down, not up. You know, thanks to gravity, they go down. Not up.

Welcome! 1CC'ing all the Touhou games on Hard is quite an accomplishment for a beginning shmupper, I've been playing these games for at least five years now and I've only 1CC'd Imperishable Night on Hard (granted, I never put much effort into anything but Normal and Extra, but still).

What Cave games have you tried so far? Most of them are pretty brutal but some aren't so bad, like Deathsmiles and Mushihimesama Futari Black Label Original Mode.
