RUMOR: Metal Gear Solid 1-3 HD Collection?!

Post by EinhanderZwei »

Some wild rumors are circling in my area: Kojima-san is planning to release the HD collection of MGS1-3 for PS3 (in the same fashion as GoW, Prince Of Persia, Ico & Shadow Of The Colossus and upcoming Tomb Raider trilogy). Anyone heard of it? And if yes, are there any news on whether the bonus content will be cut?

This? I wouldn't be at all surprised if this happens, along with other high profile PS2 games, like Gran Turismo 3 and 4.

I'm more looking forward to SotC/ICO's remake, but anything is good if it's done properly.

Well, it makes total sense. I hope more people do stuff like this. Especially since PS2 games look like ass on a LCD. Thanks new gen TVs for disregarding everything that came before! Anyway...

That being said, do you think they're just going to touch up Twin Snakes, or do a re-make of MGS themselves?

Not sure if Twin Snakes will be involved... more concerned about whether regular or Integral-Substance-Subsistence versions will be ported. Imagine Snake VS Monkey HD!

What`s the point? The first two can already be played in HD as they both have PC versions. And if you have a decent PC you can play MGS3 at whatever resolution you want with the help of PCSX2.

Seems a little too obvious an answer, but the point is to release this to people who aren't playing the PC version in HD.

Its not their next blockbuster title, they are just pleasing the fans, and I see nothing wrong with it.

This would be awesome, I never owned a PS2, so I've never played MGS3, but I loved the first two, and I'd like to play 3 before I play 4. I might just play 3 on the 3DS though.

IIRC, the PC versions don't run too well on current PCs. Both apparently have issues running on Windows Vista/7, and MGS2 had crappy GPU compatibility from the start (I'm guessing they just forked the Xbox port).

I believe this rumor. It wouldn't hurt to gain more fans/drum up hype for Metal Gear Solid: Rising by putting this out.

Right, this is my primary concern with an MGS 1-3 HD. The MGS: Essential Collection box set on PS2 did not include Disc 2 (Persistence) of MGS3 Subsistence, so players that didn't buy Subsistence before missed out on Metal Gear Online, Duel Mode against the bosses, Snake VS Monkey, and Metal Gear 1 & 2 MSX. If Konami follows through with the HD collection, I hope they don't leave anything out (Metal Gear Online notwithstanding).

I'm not seeing the logic in this. For one, I'm not sure the PC versions of MGS1/2 would run on current PCs without issues. As for MGS3, not everyone has a PC that meets the specs required to run MGS3 properly in PCSX2, nor would they be willing to make the effort to set up PCSX2 in order to run it. Not when an MGS 1-3 HD Collection would give them the option of simply popping a disc into their PS3 and going on from there.

MGS3 is a prequel to the whole series, so you can safely play MGS4 after MGS2

My PS2 is modded with a shitty chip and doesn't recognize DVD9, so I never played MGS2 Substance bonus content... would be nice of them to include it

Not to mention that there are some gamers who use PCs only for internets, paperwork and some retro games that can't be emulated anywhere else (I'm talking about myself)... and PS2 being actually cheap as dirt nowadays

Is MSG2 worth playing? I played 1 and 3 (loved both of them) but I heard the second game is the weakest of the series.

The playable (for the most part) character is a dude à la Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, only without a goatee. Make of it what you will. The game runs at higher framerate than MGS3. I liked it. If you like 1&3 and don't mind playing as the aforementioned dude, you should be okay.

2 most likely won't run without issues on any PC, be it new or old. It's a shitty port. I played through 2 on a fairly old PC ALMOST without issues. Almost. And I consider myself lucky.
1 is a much better port, but doesn't output resolutions higher than 1024x768 (which is fine on a CRT, especially with forced AA and FA, but most LCDs' native resolutions are higher).

Forget that Raiden shit, it isn't even an issue unless you're some obsessed fanboy who wanks off to pictures of Snake or something. The worst thing about MGS2 is that the plot becomes extremely convoluted and just plain weird towards the end. It kind of ruins the experience, but it's still a really good game IMO and definitely worth playing.

The story sucks. And the character you play for most of the game sucks too. The biggest problem I had with the game though, is CONSTANT codec calls. Other than that, the game ain't bad. But it's got problems. Part 3 mops the floor with it.

MGS2 plays great. The sneaking is forgiving but rewards finesse and creativity, and the action sequences are intense. Plays very smoothly overall. Still looks and sounds incredible now.

Unfortunately much about the protagonist is appallingly mishandled ("Interesting codename." "Better than the boring one my parents gave me! :[ "), which brings the game down a bit. More than worth putting up with, though, and some of the cheesier stuff is honestly in so-bad-it's-good territory.

Merits of MGS2 vs. MGS3 aside, getting an updated MGS3 running at MGS2's (almost always) crisp 60FPS framerate from this rumored HD Collection would be fantastic.

Funnily enough, according to Wikipedia, porting MGS2 to PC was handled by Success.

I think you'll find that's the best thing about it, not the worst.

I'll believe this is coming when I see it. Konami aren't too far away from releasing Snake Eater on 3DS, they're unlikely to scupper that version's sales potential by bringing the same game to the PS3 in a better value package.

I'll definitely buy an MGS collection if it does eventually come out in HD just to play Snake Eater in HD :) Easily far and above the best of the series.

The fuck do you mean you think I'll find? I think you'll find I meant exactly what I said and I'll find no such thing. MGS1 & MGS3 had interesting plots which were easy enough to follow. MGS2 on the other hand starts out great but then decides to throw coherency out the window and disappear up its own ass spectacularly towards the end. If you think that's the best thing about it, then you must have a very low opinion of the game.

If you want me to laugh at your unfunny post, at least make it obvious you're joking. I naturally assumed you were one of the many mentally disabled inbreds who post on here.
