Worlds best shmup player?
I know the title is very subjective, although what I'm looking for are articles (old and present) of Japanese shmup players (and Western, too, if there are any) that detail their accomplishments in whatever game they played. I'm sure Gamest/Arcadia has some articles. Maybe some videos would help as well.
Examples of what I'm looking for (could be web or magazine based):

Well, some people are just great by nature but doesn't have the time or willpower to train, and train for hours using SAVE STATES and all that other rubbish.

Re: Worlds best shmup player?
French documentary on shooting games contains an interview with SWY, who is widely considered one of the best shmup players in the world. There was also another interview with him that I've read recently, but I don't remember where. You may search for the words "gradius" and "NAI-san".
Other guys that may have articles written about them include GFA2-ISO, Clover-TAC, SOF-WTN, T3-CYR-WIZ, ZBL-NAI (the NAI-san referenced in the SWY interview), KDK-Takeyuki, possibly some others. There's also an interview with HFD somewhere on gamengai.com, I believe.

Funny how it took so long for somebody to actually come up with a serious answer.moozooh wrote:French documentary on shooting games contains an interview with SWY, who is widely considered one of the best shmup players in the world. Not quite what you asked for, but here´s a very entertaining replay of Gunbird 2 by a guy called GOD HAND:
http://super-play.co.uk/index.php?superplay=416
Entertaining in the sense that Gunbird isn´t a game you usually play for score, but this guy still has the patience to pick
up the coins at max value while dodging everything that´s coming his way. The bullets in Psikyo games tend to be much faster than in your standard modern bullet hell shooter, which makes his movement even more stunning.
Oh, and your username made me think of this
THE BULLETS ARE NOW DIAMONDS!

I would go with what moozooh said; all of those players not only hold records, but they hold records on a variety of shooting games.

Re: Worlds best shmup player?
Some translated interviews that I know of:
Arcadia 2001 Interview With Yusemi-SWY
Interview With HFD (I think from the INH DDPDOJ Superplay)
A lot of top players also keep blogs, if you're interested in that as well.

I otherwise only know he was on the INH Ketsui DVD, but SYO will always have my admiration for his insane Dragon Blaze no-miss.

Re: Worlds best shmup player?
This is an impossible question. There are so many high level players in Japan. Also, some players refuse to submit their highest scores to arcadia. I am pretty surprised no one has mentioned LAOS-長田仙人 or KTL-NAL.
Even if you restricted the question to "Who is the best player of the donpachi series?" you would still have a hard time deciding who should hold that title:
Laos- held the record on dp, ddp, ddp2, ddp3 all when the games were very popular
BGR 44 - no missed donpachi, scored 2b on ddp3, current record holder in dp and ddp3
WTN - no missed donpachi, has current records on DP, DDP, DDP Campaign version
ISO - had records in ddp3 bl and holds records in ddp daif bl
NAI - won the ddp saturn competition, had records in dp and ddp, probably has the c ship record in ddp campaign version
NAL and HFD deserve mention as well but I don't know their histories on games they don't currently have records on.

Twin Eagle II tried to be that (at least in terms of having some SFII style joystick motions for the special attacks).harrihaffi wrote:Hmm...is there a street fighter 2 of shmups? Probably SWY, Dame K.K., ISO or MON.
And as for western players? I think Sik is one of the very best.

Re: Worlds best shmup player?
There is no answer. Given any superplayer, there's only so many shmups that they're proficient in--there will be shmups where, if you watched them play via captured video, you'd probably be forgiven for thinking they are new to the genre.
Every superplayer is great at some shmup or two or three, but no such player is good enough such that they cannot be eclipsed at any game.

No one mentioned Archer? His Ibara record alone deserves some recognition.
T3-KAMUI for the consistent destruction of Garegga with Gain, and both KET and DXP-Yoshidaya for ship versatility. Also, DAB.S and NER.
