Somebody stop me, please...

Post by RNGmaster »

I'm about to read House of Leaves. I will do my best to provide updates on my mental state. That is all.

Have you thought about reading Kobo Abe's Boxman instead?

It's like what would happen if A Series Of Unfortunate Events was written by Jared Lee Loughner.
All horror novels sound stupid when explained, but I've heard that this is actually paranoia-inducing and can give people headaches.

Gah, this was such a pain in the ass to read during lunch breaks. Decent story but I expected more for all the effort I put in. Enjoy.

^ screwed up your image link?
I have yet to read this, and will probably this year. It's most likely one of the last books I'll buy in physical form. There's is allot of hype surrounding this, and it sounds like a complete mess to read. I'm only going to read it because of the persistent rumors of it being a main influence on Silent Hill 2, mainly the use of interminable hallways, and psychological degradation.
It's up in the air if this is really a horror novel, the author has stated it's not. It's more recognized as an evolution in the presentation of fiction, very similar to Pale Fire.

Screw it, i'm to lazy to deal with my embedding problem. Long and short I bought the book this morning. This is going to be interesting.

My girlfriend read this a long time ago and liked it a lot. Aside from liking me, her mental state seems okay.

I really enjoyed House of Leaves. I really like the type of horror it explores.

Some people really got into it, deciphering the letters and such.

I thought it was a pretty decent book. It didn't break my brain or anything, but it was mostly pretty good.

Been reading it on and off for the last couple months as well. Pretty tough one to chew, especially for a non-native English reader, but some parts sure do resonance in very unexpected and unnerving ways.

Only 3 chapters in, but so far i'm really enjoying this. I love horror where things aren't out right terrifying, just slightly off in a way that builds tension and unease. The presentation of what's happening within the Navidson Record itself reminds me of how H.P. Lovecraft's The Colour Out of Space begins and that's huge praise. Nothing weird with the presentation just yet.

I also really like how the book will briefly talk about something abnormal or frightening like Exploration #4, then jump to an entire chapter on family life or bullshit stories about pit fighting. Gives you just enough of a taste than brings things back to normality.

I thought this would be really hard to read - and truthfully, the tangents about echoes or the psychology of mazes is kind of dense, not to mention the page-long sentences that Johnny is so fond of - but the book is a real masterpiece. The sense of exploration is what gets me about the Navidson Record chapters, and I always manage to make it through the slow parts with the mantra that soon I'll be able to find out what fucked-up stuff is going on in the Labyrinth.

At about Page 180. Shit's getting real crazy already, especially in terms of formatting, but I hold out hope that both Zampano's summaries and Johnny's footnotes will become more deranged yet.

Ok, now I'm hooked. It appears that this book hasn't be translated to spanish so there is no way I'll be able to get it unless I order it from Amazon or risk my sorry a$$ by importing it from a regular store...

What are the differences between the two editions I saw in Amazon? Paperback and Library Binding? 700+ pages looks to be a bit too much for a paperback and I fear I'll break the book apart after a while.

Any help will be appreciated if the book offers me a gigantic mind fuck of surreal madness just like Mr. Lovecraft did.

Whether paperback or hardcover, get the full color edition at all costs.

Frankly it seems really hard to find the non-full colour editions, but there's no reason not to get one anyways. Though if your choice is between the two favour the red.

Ok, guys, Amazon proved to suck due to its lack of PayPal support (only source I have that makes every purchase appear in my own currency so I don't get murdered by my father... since I'm using his credit card after being forced to retire mine due to shitty unemployment).

Anyway, I'm scared to see this book is so damn huge. Barnes & Noble ships internationally and lets me use PayPal but the price difference between the paperback and the hardcover with full colour is pretty big.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/House- ... 0375703768

$13 plus shipping for the paperback.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/House- ... +of+leaves

$32 plus shipping for the remastered giga-mega-mix in the remix punchi-punchi version full colour.

On your "anglosaxonic" (wtf?!) eyes, is it really worth the extra price? Notice I'll be paying 4 times that amount since that's how de-valuated we are... So I really want to make the best choice but not get axed like mad. Thank god, books aren't taxed here.

Holy shit, they also have light novels. lol at the Spice & Wolf #1 cover.

Well, the book is pretty damn large actually, so paperback doesn't seem to be a good choice for it…
