Star Control 2 on PSP and Wii

Post by Strider77 »

This may be old news to most, but it was new to me. Star Control 2 is now playable on the PSP and Wii if you have them hacked. I haven't loaded it on the Wii yet but I do have it up and running on the PSP. It even has options for the PC or 3DO music and voices.

I loved this game back in the day, was the 1st PC game I really played. I really wish this game would get a HD overhaul and released on xbox live. While I'm dreaming I'll take a proper sequel.

Anyone else have major love for this game? Mass Effect is the closest thing I've played to it ans that's a big reason why I love Mass Effect 1 and 2.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Same here, HUGE....sickeningly huge fan :) And it was one of the reasons Mass Effect almost made me wet myself too. Sadly...I hated ME2 due to several issues I won't go into here.

But I didn't know this ran on the PSP...how's it run? Can I run it with the GenD-3 firmware? Or do I need something else? Cause I WANT IT!
<@scootnet> if you were a real gamer, you could jerk it to Super Metroid box art

Played it on Genesis this weekend. I've never even played the full game, just 4 years of Melee tournaments in college.

That's Star Control 1, completely different game & genre. Play Star Control 2, even if you just play Melee the new ships are awesome (but the full game is definitely worth playing).

Any Starflight fans here? Star Control 2 was so heavily inspired by the Starflight games. Starflight was such an immersive SF RPG and really gave the feel of space exploration, the whole Star Trek Enterprise experience, communicating with alien races, going on wild goose chases, finding wormholes, landing on planets and exploring them, finding alien artifacts, investigating the mysteries of the galaxy, fighting enemy star ships.... all on one 3.5" floppy disk! I played it until the very end, but then it turned out that my copy of the game was somehow defective and wouldn't allow me to accomplish the ultimate goal. Then Starflight 2 came out, and I played that until I upgraded to a 486. I then lost the ability to play it properly because the math coprocessor was too fast to trigger the alien communications when in space.

I tried getting into the MD version of Starflight but failed. I guess I need the goofy comedy trappings/awesome spaceship battles to make the experience work for me. Paul Reiche III, one of the minds behind Starcon 2 worked on Starflight so the connections are actually more than inspiration.

No way, I did not know that. That would explain the similarities. I own the Genesis/MD version of Starflight as well, but I didn't care for it much. It wasn't as straightforward as the PC game, especially when they have the terrain rover affected by different terrains like sliding around on ice and having to upgrade it and such. They tried to make it more like a Genesis game or something in that respect.

Fine so far... no issues or bugs ect that I have heard of. Well not on this version, some earlier ones were reported to be dodgy but it seems to be all worked out according to the man behind the PSP convert's posts.
