One Answer Question Thread

Post by dunpeal2064 »

Had something like this in the speedsolving forums I used to frequent, and I thought it might be useful here too. I searched around and didn't see something like this, but if there already is or this idea totally sucks then go ahead and delete it.

The point is just to post any questions you have that you don't want to take up a thread for, and people just answer em as you see em. Hope this is useful.

Ok my question is (which i asked in a locked thread) Is WTF is it with every bloody shmup getting released in February? which is worse for PAL with DS and i believe RFA aswell. I hope all these shmup devs and publishers realise they are all stepping on each others toes

Who else loves DOJ BLEX despite the horrible loading times and screwed up replays?

Also wanted to say that I'm loving DSIIX. Only wish they would have stuck with the theme a bit more.

TRADEWEST Games has no one but itself to blame for this, they could have had 8 month earlier start and grabbed quite a few sales just by being the first published shooter in PAL,

What is generally considered the best place to start if I want to move up to playing shmups on pcbs instead of purely on consoles?
(Sorry if this gets asked a lot, I am teh noob when it comes to pcb stuff)

There are a few FAQ's and Guides on Arcadeotaku Wiki aimed at beginners to the hobby.

Hmm, read through the candy cab section, and the snk section. Learned a few things :)
I remember reading about something you can plug your pcbs into and then hook up to your tv? Is this what a supergun is?

Yes, a supergun is a small box that consists of a power supply, a jamma plug/connector, controller ports, and AV connectors to hook to your TV. I'd only advise on getting a supergun if you didn't have space for a cab, or lived in some remote region where cabinets are very rare. In the US you can get an empty jamma cab (woody) with monitor for less than most superguns. Superguns also have limitations when it comes to displaying some PCBs on a standard tube TV and even more problems on some LCD TVs.

Oh I see... I had assumed the supergun would be cheaper, but I'd much rather get a full cab. Might have to wait till me and the lady move later this year, but it seems to be worth the wait. Thanks for the quick responses!

Why is Master of Weapon so unplayably hard? I remember playing it (as Yukiwo - Master of Weapon) in the arcade when it came out and we could never get very far. So I tried it again on my XBOX MAME and got raped hard. The only other game that deals death in such a way is the later stages of Neo Geo Ghost Pilots and maybe the Rayxambers.
Either I suck or this game is badly designed.
Please check for yourself and try to 1CC this thing on default.

It's uplayably hard because of hard to see bullets, large hitbox and dodgy collision detection.

The game is absolute crud, even Asuka & Asuka is superior. Furthest I've been is the level 2 mid boss.

I'm currently working my way on Master of Weapon for the PS2 (after a few training sessions on MAME).

I agree with Mero, it's such a crude, cruel game. It's extremely unfair at times and makes you want to throw the controller against the wall. Annoying power-up scheme, annoying sound effects, it also has the worst shmup BGM I ever heard (stage 5). The rank is brutal.
I wouldn't say collision detection is bad, it's just that the hitbox is huge.

@DEL Reporting back with Glory? Who knows, I'm trying to get in the zone here....

Thanks for the replies.
Master of Weapon is......as I thought it was.

Shame, because the graphics and general feel had potential :(

Charlatan! Collision detection is fine and bullets are easy to see once you know what you're looking for. Ship is awfully big though, and some of the bullets move stupidly fast.

Personally, I didn't find it that hard either.

Anybody played the MD version? I wonder if they might have tweaked it a bit for that.

I played it a long while ago.
It's overall easier, with the exception of the 2nd boss. His attack on the second form was changed to a spread pattern that makes it really, really hard to dodge and survive. Unless you get there with an H weapon in stock, either you gotta have pixel-perfect dodging skills or you gotta be very lucky.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha no.

But I can get up to the second mini boss without too much grief. And I am pretty bad at shmups in general. I mention this merely as a counterpoint, I seriously am not gloating about my unmatched skills at Master of Weapon.

Search your Live! marketplace for "Hutari". Cough up 1200 Live! points. Done.

Great idea! (Also, Speedsolving as in that Rubiks Cube forum? I was pretty into cubing for a while, have a Dayan Guhong and even managed to do this two-pair method - lots of fun! My times still suck though  There even exists a Ketsui cube!)

Question:

What resolution do the CAVE SH3 games run at? Can´t find that info anywhere on World-Of-Arcades.com...

This is perfect, as I have a question that I don't want to waste space.

What was the name of that rare, expensive PS1 shmup that recently came out for PSN in the US? Oh, would you say it's the best PSN shmup? Asking for a friend.

I believe you're thinking of Gaia Seed. Pretty decent game, from what I've heard. The PSN library of SHMUP's is not the best, though I enjoyed Gundemonium somewhat. R-Type Delta is good if you like R-Type. Soldner-X leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Super Stardust HD is fun but not the same. Mobile Light Force is Gunbird, right? I like that one. If you have any other PSN questions, PM me as I have a very involved PSN account.

Does anyone know of a cheaper and better way of acquiring the Dreamcast SD Adapter than ordering it direct from China with a $20+ shipping charge? The appeal of doing my own homebrew without having to use an emulator OR having to burn discs is rather appealing.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

If I want a cab and live in Colorado, am I better off just buying tools/materials to build one myself, or is there a reasonable way to buy one that's not a POS "MAME cabinet"?

Not quite the same thing, but you could mount an SD slot (or a microSD-to-SD adapter, which is probably easier/cheaper to obtain than a proper SD slot, though microSD cards aren't all compatible with the protocol used) directly into the Dreamcast. Not 100% sure, but the method the Chinese adapter uses is probably the same as the original interface by jj1odm.

yep same forums. I always liked my A5 cube. Think my best time was 18 seconds. Sadly I have kind of fell out of practice, replacing that time with shmup time.

My question: Why can't I find superplays of donpachi? It seems like there is a lot of info on dodonpachi, but not nearly as much about its predecessor

Thanks for the info, that led me on some searches that led to even more Dreamcast discoveries.

As for your question, this might seem basic, but have you tried Craigslist? I don't know if Colorado has a lot of people using Craigslist to offload arcades, but we have them all the time in Cleveland. If not, then go nuts with some supplies and build a candy cab.
