Which 6 button Genesis pad to get?

Post by alpha5099 »

I've asked this at GameFAQs and on the Sega 16 forum, and I still don't havee a straight answer. What're the differences between the different 6 button controllers available, at least 3 seem to claim to be official Sega products.

This one seems to be the direct forerunner to the Saturn pad:

Here's one with different looking buttons:

This seems to be the same as the one above, but with Turbo:

Most people seem to be indicating that tthe first pad is the only one worthwhile, while at least 2 people have stated they think the 3rd pad is fan-fucking-tastic. I wouldn't mind if that's the case, it's far and away the easiest to find on eBay, but I'm still fishing for more opinions, some consensus would be nice.

I've used both the 1st and 3rd, and I prefer the 3rd one by far.

I say, wow, I thought the Saturn pad had a nice D-pad, but the 6-button w/ turbo pad just blew me away. I love how clicky the D-pad and the face buttons are, and it fits comfortably in my hands. The buttons and D-pad in the first one, while just as precise, feel too mushy for my tastes.

edit: if you're buying some on eBay, why not get both (or all)? They're not too expensive, and I imagine you'd be able to find them at flea markets also.

Third one is nice, and it does have the best tactile reponse, but the first one (which was actually the original 6-button controller) has that silky smooth feel like a well-worn model 2 Saturn pad. It's a matter of preference, really, although I prefer the first one for action games and the third for RPGs or games where straight horizontal-vertical movement is more important. Also note that the turbo model seems to be incompatible with a couple more games than the first one. (Decap attack being one IIRC)

i have the top one on the list and it's my favourite pad of all time. the d-pad is loose as hell so if you're not into that go for the 3rd one, but it allows for some reall quick movements and it's suprisingly accurate. the buttons just feel great too.

only problem is that the lead for the pad is stupidly short. why?!?!?!

Yeah, for some reason Sega never saw fit to give us the controller length that Nintendo did. I have extension cords on all my Sega consoles, but not on my Nintendo consoles (although I would need one for the cube if I didn't have a wavebird). Oh well, at least it's not as bad as the worst offender -- the TG16.

Sega's shorter controllers are the ones that came with the console.
Newer ones have always (for me at least) been of some legitimate length.

The worst offender is the Intellivision with the short telephone like cords.

It's funny because in some PCE game manuals, there's a picture of a kid playing games really close to the TV :)

I wonder why the cords weren't extended for TG-16 (easy enough to build your own from standard parts) but it's understandable for Japanese since real estate is quite limited in most parts of the cities.

Definitely the third controller. I found the original controller's small buttons were rather annoying in some cases.

I purchased one of these recently. The guy had a whole load of them, brand new & unopened. While the dpad itself is pretty stiff.. obviously due to it being new, it's really good. It has a slow and turbo option, and the buttons are large and easy to use. I use this for shmups, too..

The 1'st one all the way!!!!!
I have one of those "other" ones, and personally I think they suck hardcore, as the buttons feel "sticky", and the thumb pad itself sits up pretty high.

The originals (1st pic) feel very close to the original Japanese Saturn pads, and are accurate. They also just "feel right"...at least to me.

I have the Ascii SG-6, the SG Propad 2, and the 1st style official Genesis 6-button pad. The 1st style Genesis pad is awesome and very well designed. The SG Propad 2 is also a very good pad. It has the ability to assign different functions to the special L and R buttons. The pad itself is very comfortable and the buttons are well sized and placed. I didn't care much for the Ascii SG-6. I found it isn't as good with diagonals as the other pads and the SNES style button placing is wierd.
