So who out there in shmup land truly and utterly sucks, yet still manages to enjoy playing these games out of some sort of sadism?

I'd currently rank myself between Utter Trash and Trash. anyone out there COMPLETE shit?

id say my greatest danmaku acheivements are 1ccing touhou 8 on normal and bwr on normal (with guard on of course haha)

why do we play these things again?

I'm pretty terrible. To me, I just really enjoy shmup gameplay, trying to better yourself etc. I suppose I am a masochist but eh. I know that when I meet certain goals I have with certain games, I will come with the force of a thousand suns and all my pain and anger will have been worth it.

I can overcome most any shmupping hurdle with enough practice (my Cho Ren Sha 68k 1CC is a testament to this), but too often I lose motivation or simply have my interest pulled away by another shmup.

As long as you're improving overall, you don't "suck" in my view. It's the journey (getting better, enjoying yourself) not the destination (finally becoming what you perceive as a good player) that matters. If you're not willing to throw yourself into a situation you cannot overcome yet, you will never be able to overcome it. I can't think of anything else that is as fun and not just in these kind of games but in everything.

I don't suck. Yeah, I haven't been able to truly 1cc any shmup up to now, but that's only because I picked up serious shmup-play about two months ago.

If I compare my shmup-skills of today with those of two months ago, I get this warm fuzzy feeling inside. I'm able to dodge bullet-patterns much better now (though I still die a lot) and I managed to get to Level 4 of EspRaDe on the first credit. Compared to two months ago, when I didn't even last to the first boss, that's progress. And it feels good. And it keeps me playing. Even if I make only the tiniest bit of progress: As long as it's progress it's not sucking.

the only "real" shmup I've 1cc'd is Armed Police Batrider and that's considered an easy shmup among the hardcore.

I'd really like to 1cc another shmup one of these days.

These are my thoughts exactly. Sucking is all relative. It's all a matter of practice. If the game is enjoyable, then keep playing and eventually you will progress to the point of competent play, which I believe is a personal standard. Even a one credit clear of Esprade "sucks" compared to Clover-TAC.

I am not the most skilled player but I managed to 1CC BL Futari (who didn't with some practise) and also 1 Touhou game I think it was the 10th one which was not very hard at all to 1cc with some practise on normal.

Still though I enjoy shmup games even though I suck at them badly sometimes.

I am probably better than your average FPS player, but I am next to nothing in the realm of real shmuppers.

Probably my biggest achievement so far was clearing Mushi Futari 1.5 Original. That's not easy, but it's one Cave's easier games, and certainly kind of low on the grand scale of things.
I'm working on it though. However, goofy as it may seem, there is a part in King Of Kong where Billy Mitchell is saying that being a champion is "in your DNA". It's not in my DNA. But I do enjoy myself. But I really shy away from playing for score, since it would really put a "why even bother " attitude in my head, since i'm so bad. I only play for survival, and have a tough time with that as it is.

I dont think it has anything to do with dna, its mostly pratice, a strong desire to improve, focus and pratice. Unless you mean dna of a good player is able to do these to things to a better extent then a sucky player

Around my friends...hoo boy, I'm the resident shmup guy, for better or for worse. The only other person I regularly hang out with who plays (non-TH) shmups to the point of being able to go toe-to-toe with me is Aru-san, and even then he doesn't spend much time with my group of friends.

Yeah, I suck. Best I managed to do was to 1cc Blue Wish Resurrection+ Original, (autoguard on). I suck so hard, I can't even 1cc games that are considered easy like Battle Bakraid (srsly, where the fuck is the hitbox). But on the other hand I got reflexes like a sloth, so what do I wonder anyway.

Well, certainly people can get pretty damn good with intense practice, but I firmly believe some people have a limit to how good they can get. I don't think i've reached my limit yet, but any means. But some people can certainly hit higher heights.

The truth is, no matter how good you are, there's always someone else who's much better than you and makes you feel like trash. Even if you work hard and reach the top of the scoreboards here, you can always watch a superplay and see how much improvement you still can do. And even if you are absolutely the best player in one game, there's always another one where you suck.

Play a game not to be THE BEST™, because that's an unachievable goal. Do it because you enjoy it. Being good at the game comes naturally with the time you spend with it.

By the way: With all the 1ccs under my belt, you'd think I consider myself a good player. Not really - I'd say I'm a bit above average. Give me a new shmup and my first few runs will be awful. It still takes me hours and hours to get good at it. It's just that I enjoy games so much that I won't stop until I get good enough. If anything, my 1cc list is just a testament of how much time I spend playing.

Bullshit. He's a champion because he worked night and day for his achievement. While natural talent does exists, many people regard themselves like that for an easy ego boost.

Funny thing is, I had an interesting conversation with my girlfriend. She asked me how I could stand playing the same game over and over and over...

The answer was easy: Because it's there. Because it's a challenge. It's some kind of test of willpower. It's also a lesson in patience, but also a lesson in humbleness.

It takes time, patience, passion and quite a strong will, getting better in shmups. Actually, those are traits that come quite handy even in RL...

So no, there's no sucking at shmups, just lack of willpower/interest/whuteva if you're not good at them.
