Smilies Suck
Smilies Suck
I mean really people, this forum is excellent but sometimes it looks like an AOL chatroom.
How about we ban them for everyday purposes and only use them on special occasions (Malc's bday or when someone gets laid, for example).

I used to think smiles were stupid
Then I noticed how they can make easy to people understand what you mean when you are writing (Something that's not so hard when you are actually speaking)
Now I use them more than I should. I abuse of them, and I know that. I am trying to stop, but it's so difficult!

I try to avoid them whenever possible. I definitely refuse to use them ironically, it's just not funny anymore. Sometimes though, it's just hard to put to words something that is just so elegantly summed up by an emoticon. And sarcasm is usually misintrepretted without the aid of a

I like smilies so much I suggest that when somebody gets some we only use smillies and not use any letters.
Just use numbers and rotate your screen 180 degrees and try to type.
Or we could have a german day or something. Where everything has to be typed in german.
I getting tired of myself.
Nice topic, made me laugh.

Being understood
I'll agree that they get the point across.
The written word can easily be misconstrued. Smilies/emoticons can avoid misunderstandings. A simple 'wink' can show that you're joking and not slagging someone off.
Other forums don't like them, but when you consider that approx 90% of face 2 face communication is through body language and 10% verbal, the smilies provide some part of the 90% when writing on forums.
