Karous...mechanics question

I was gonna give this game another look over, since the last time I played it I didn't have a CRT, and it looked HORRIBLE on my LCD. Well, now I have a couple of CRTs...so...

However, I didn't understand how to play the game. Could someone give me a quick rundown of how to play it? All I remember was you shot, and you had close attack thing.
