The Internet Defeats GAP

Post by njiska »

About a week ago GAP revealed a new logo. This move was extremely unpopular with the Gap community. After receiving 2000+ negative complaints on their Facebook wall and two fake Twitter accounts (@GapLogo and @NewGapLogo) the company is scraping the entire logo initiative, which probably cost a fortune, and are going back to the old logo. Just goes to show you the power of social media.

They're lucky the people aren't charging them a consultation fee for saving the GAP the cost of renovating all those storefronts.

Perhaps they could use their new logo at XFL games....
<@scootnet> if you were a real gamer, you could jerk it to Super Metroid box art

Seriously. It looks like something from a typosquatter site.

Also, who are these people that get outraged over a logo change for some store at the mall?

Even though the old logo makes me think early 90s, that new logo is fucking hideous. And you have to work to make Helvetica look bad.

Helvetica has started to become boring. It's overused. The old Gap logo is 10x better- there was no need to even consider changing the established branding. The new one looks like it was whipped up with PSP in about 20 seconds.

Sometimes there are certain things that aren't to be messed with.

I still like how clean and friendly Helvetica is, but yeah, definitely overused. We need another David Carson to shake everything up.

Gap's logo is simple and timeless....weird that they kinda stopped using it on their marketing material.

I'm glad they had the sense to go back. hey have a really well established logo and the new one looked like someone made it in ms word. At least when people were all up in arms about the Pepsi logo they had a history of changing their logos fairly often.

The new Gap logo looks like some idiot whipped it up in 10 minutes for their high school graphic design class.

The old one was clean, simple, and it worked.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Wow, a company actually listens to its userbase before it makes a stupid decision?

Sounds like a great move to me. That new logo looks really terrible. Gap clothes sell themselves, why even mess with the logo. Would be like if McDonald's wanted to change their shit, what's the point.

Hilarious, even the NPR Marketplace host ripped on this today. "Uuuuhg-lee!"

I think it looks like somebody took inspiration one of those default Microsoft PowerPoint themes, and decided that they could one better that by taking a bland font ("but it connotes pop culture ties, like sex in the city don't you SEE MAN") and then putting a little box on the end. Yes, retailer logos that have a little box somewhere in the title are totally unexpected, totally.
PsychoGun wrote:Wow, a company actually listens to its userbase before it makes a stupid decision?
Not quite, it's more like they roll out a stupid idea on the internet first, because it's safer that way, and then grudgingly go "well, I guess that Internet GAP community saved us from looking like dicks in a few months, hyuk hyuk"

Nerds would have caused GAP headquarters to burn itself down, and we wouldn't be here talking about it if that happened. Certainly wouldn't be blaming nerds.

Helvetica has started to become boring 30 years ago, when it actually was overused, and it has remained boring ever since.

The old "Swiss" typographical style that relied on Helvetica and related bland fonts to give an impression of seriousness and neutrality is still (rarely) used today with good effect, but only in well designed pages: the retired new GAP logo is only a short word in a pointless, wrong font, made worse by a completely meaningless and graphically destructive non-ornament.

This logo is so unreasonably bad that it might be a fake (deliberately spread to make GAP appear stupid?) or a test to observe the Internet reaction to an obviously bad move.

You have a point, infact the more i think about it the more it does look to be some fiendishly effective form of marketing as we are all talking about it arnt we. And that logo is like that ketsui review on gamefaq in that its too crap for its own good and coming from a company that should know better.

Intentional or not whoever thought the whole thing up and designed that logo deserves a medal

Also, going from two solid colors (one being white/no color) to putting in an ugly box of fade will make the logo more expensive to print. I think some rich executive's offspring made it in some open source program and made dad/mommy show it to his boss on a dare. "Quit being such a wuss dad!"

sorry if i havnt made myself clear, i have a habit posting when im half asleep.

Reading lordstars post i started to imagine the same thing but applied to the touhou weeaboo crowd with somebody pulling off a marketing trick that had them pulling their hair out in out-rage.
(A good example would be somebody making a fake ZUN post stating the for the next touhou game all the lolis are gonna be replaced by Cho-anki like characters  )

(i know my fixation with taking the piss out of the weeaboos is a bit unhealthy, but youve gotta let this little prick here have some cheap laughs)

Good thing they stuck to the old logo. I don't care about Gap or anything, but their logo was pretty classic.

Too bad fan outrage wasn't enough to get DC Comics to keep their old logo. :(

Hey, doesn't American Apparel use Helvetica in their logo? I thought that seemed familiar!
