What's up with cave-stg.com?

Post by krokodil_final »

Hi,

i don't know if this is the right place to ask, but what happened to cave-stg.com? My account seems to be removed (i don't know why), registration is disabled and without login i can only see the highscore forum. Maybe someone (EOJ etc.) can tell me what's wrong.

I actually tried to go there earlier looking for information on the PGM2 release of DDP DOJ, and found my account removed too. Someone who is still registered there has pasted the following to me, from a post EOJ made on that board:
EOJ wrote:First, people don't source the forums, so I've closed them to the public. I'm tired of spending time posting news and translations, writing strategy guides, and so on, for people who do not respect the site enough to even source it.

Second, I've closed registration. After being online for almost 3 years, we have the real fans here, and I'm starting to remove those who don't visit or contribute to the site much. My goal is to have a nice small, closed community consisting purely of the real fans who want accurate info on these games. The morons can post on shmups or gamefaqs or wherever
So there you go.

Because clearly, real fans are born as such - it's impossible to become a "real" fan over time.

(Self-edit as anything else is pretty much self-evident.)

This is a hard pill to swallow.
I can not hold it against EOJ, he has made it very clear that he does not like it when people use info from his site without linking to it. And, the community as a whole seems to be going through some serious growing pains.
I am completely obsessed with information, and I am upset to lose somewhere that has such a valid source of news and history. I have even enjoyed pouring through all of the interviews, and how the hell am I going to find out what happens at the meeting with the fans that is coming up!
I still consider myself new to here, hell new to the inter-net in general. Recovering luddite. I only figured out how to re size pics this week.. And, have found that it is difficult to really find my place to contribute here, mostly it's been stay out of the way, stick to what I know and like, and try not to litter. This really is the first forum for me. The people that do bring solid info here are good at it, why should I try to beat them to the punch when they can do a better job at posting it.
It may also be a little unfair to the existing members to drop them for not logging in. I come through here all the time, but only log on if I'm going to post.
I had hoped to sign up at Cave.STG to cross pollinate my scores, as I was starting to get a few. Plus, I had started to wonder if it was possible to play Espgaluda @ BL in a kind of trick shot way. It sucks to lose somewhere that would be a huge resource for something like that. I also need to look up where the health items are in Guwange!
I hope that some of this will work out in the end. Maybe the community there will see that from time to time you may need to tap some one for the consideration of membership there.
Jeeze, I really have so much more to say, but I'll try to cut this short before I time out and lose this post (something else I need to figure out still..) Cave STG we miss you!
It sucks to feel left out, but sometimes that is how life goes.

I'm a part of a small community website myself, and I can see his perspective regarding the registrations. We have a lot of people join, post once or twice and then not visit for months. These accounts tend to get trimmed.

Also, when there is an easy portal for new registration.. there can be a considerable bit of maintenance involved with that. If life starts to make it difficult to dedicate the time to all of that, you have to either find some assistance.. or you batten down the hatches.

The Cave-STG forums suck.

I've lurked there for awhile, and never had the urge to join. Most of the people who post there post at shmups too, and more often.

So really, what's the point. Let them have their little nerd club.

Removing people's accounts is fucking low though, who cares if they don't post much, some people have shit to do in the real world, and they don't sit around all day translating cave interviews and taking pictures of their jamma kits.

or both!

I'm not too worried about what other people think, also the whole true fan thing sounds like the "hardcore vs casual" gaming debate.

As opposed to this one.

I admit Cave-stg doesn't offer spill over with debate (probably because it's all centred around one game dev) but it's crammed with useful info and the updates are always really good. It's a shame EOJ decided to shut the doors as it was a good little forum and growing momentum, but whatever, his forum, his call.

Unless people are straight up plagiarizing his stuff like icy did before, then I really don't see the point in this.

plagiarise v. - take without referencing from someone else's writing or speech.
icycalm wrote:This review was originally published on CAVE-STG.
crithit5000 wrote:I really don't see the point in this
Ah, well I can explain the reasons behind EOJ's infantile behaviour. It was never about linking his website in the first place, he can't be stupid enough to misunderstand how the flow of information works in this universe. It was all about control, that is why he had his strategy guide deleted from this forum to keep things exclusive. He wanted people to end up on his website so that he can wield a little bit of power and multiply that power through their increasing numbers and his own value. But alas, what is the point of power to a mere human, if it cannot be released or demonstrated somehow? EOJ has banned people for simply posting on icycalm's forum before, or being from New Zealand. Alas, he has used the final lever against those outside his own little forum, closing the doors. A truly cruel (cunning, I suppose) person would have left a small lever and I'm afraid his high score forum doesn't suffice. After all, the reviews which are worth reading are already on insomnia. 8)

I hope he sticks with his decision. Good riddance.

The above post pretty much sums up the story of EOJ. He used to be a good guy but started sliding into a spiral of his own self importance, and it's a shame.

Of course this also leaves a few entries in our strategy forum broken - since he removed his posts from there and put in links which no longer work. Of course I saw this coming a long time ago and have copies of them just in case. I'll probably have to re-write them unless someone else feels like writing a new/better one.

I can partly understand him doing it. cave-STG is a really good resource of information, mainly posted by a handful of members who actually KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT. The info on there is reliable... This forum also has info, but a lot more daft in-jokes, trolling, moaning about cover artwork... whatever - there's a place for that... and it's here.

With more members of this forum joining up to cave-STG some of the threads there start to resemble the same threads here, so what's the point.

Hmm. Shame that guy turned into such a weirdo. Shmups are a niche genre- you'd think that if you love them you wouldn't mind sharing information. You'd think you wouldn't delete contributions to a strategy forum that everybody could use. If you love the games, does it really hurt sharing a little information?

What a prick. I really hope he doesn't try to come back here after effectively calling everybody here morons.

It does kind of suck a little bit that people didn't say "hey, I got this from Cave-STG", but really- I'm sure there are ways to get the same information he did I'd wager.

I think I understand his stance one the matter, it would be aggravating. But it makes me wondering if he's been doing all that he has for the sake of the community, or to get credit for it. Of well, I really don't feel like I'm missing out on anything too significant by not being able to visit their anymore. Maybe they'll come up with some sort of private torrent site like system of earning invites for your post ratio  .
