I was arguing with a buddy whether Battlezone or Robot Tank was better. I like Battlezone's strategic 3d movement in which you have to keep moving and use the radar to avoid being shot. All of the enemies and shots move on a playing field with proper spacial relationships, meaning that you can be hit from behind. And, when you see a new tank on the radar, you have to immediately plan a course of action, carefully moving at angles most likely to minimize the chances of being hit.
But in Robot Tank, the enemies will never fire unless you face them, and you can only be hit if you are actually looking at the shot they've fired. Robot Tank's enemies always appear to be on the horizon, and the movement is generally pretty funky. Your shots also move with your tank's angle, so the strategy is often to turn your shot into the other tank in the last second while not looking at incoming shots. I think this is lame, and is almost a game-killer for me. Tank games should be more strategic, and Robot Tank is a reflex-fest.
On the other hand, Robot Tank does have individual systems being damaged (like radar knocked out), weather, and the enemies put up more of a fight in general. This adds to the variety: when the fog rolls in, or it's night time, you have to fall back on using radar. You can play it for # of squadrons destroyed, or you can play it for # of days survived, giving the player multiple goals.
Both games have awesome graphics and sounds.
So, I ask you: which is the better tank game?
Battlezone or Robot Tank?
