The Raiden Project freakin owns
The Raiden Project freakin owns
So yeah, after searching for it for at least two years, I found it at GameStop. Complete. For $15.
Raiden's aged a bit, but Raiden 2 is still the shiznit. Mebbe I just have a soft spot for it because it was my first modern shmup, bu man you can't deny its greatness. I'm amazed how beautiful it still looks to me, and wow...after playing it, it's evident that Raizing got its inspiration from this, big time. The explosions are detailed, the enemy ships blowing up and shrapnel going everywhere -- definitely Raizing recognized.
Anyways, hell yeah, lovin it mang...but the last boss in Raiden 2's just about as much a bummer as every last boss in any Gradius. The peak of the game was definitely the boss fight with that huge boss, right before going into space.

Recently, I had to hunt down this game as well, as it isn´t sold regularly anymore. I noticed how close to the PCB this port is, once you selected the game, it looks and feels exactly the same, with coin inserts and all. A friend was here who didn´t know I had bought a PS1 again, and he asked "hey, when did you buy that PCB?" because the PS1 was somehow hidden in this cablike structure.
Actually, I prefer Raiden I nowadays, I don´t find it technically inferior at all, and I think it´s slightly more "fair" than part 2. The drawback, of course, is being set back after dying, but the game itself is easier to learn to avoid dangerous traps. There are quite a few "tricks" how to get through hard situations easily, similar to several Psikyo games. In Raiden 2 and DX, they tried to eliminate these tricks, making the game constantly challenging, but increasing the number of cheap deaths as well.
One question concerning the new release with only Raiden 1 on it: does this load to the game title screen directly, without any options menu or select screen? That would be a reason to consider a purchase for me. I hate it how Raiden DX always goes back to the main menu after game over, the less menus and loading times a game version has, the better it is imo.

Congrats LoneSage
I'm currently trying to find Raiden DX atm
I purchased The Raiden Project back in March sometime at Gamestation for £19.99 with manual and everything (but It's a PAL with those damn ugly borders
)
The case looked like someone applyed a bunson burner to the case
but aslong as I own the game the casing doesn't bother me really.
I prefer Raiden II myself Raiden I doesn't interest me much.
btw anyone know of a good review and comparison between Raiden II and DX?

My Trying Not To
the jp. version of Project doesn´t allow to turn respawn points off for Raiden I, they are turned off by default for Raiden 2, though.Rob wrote:Raiden 1 on PS is the same is Raiden Project, menu and all. Except, since I played the US version of Project, I was disappointed to find out the option to turn on respawns was absent (as in Raiden 2). Was this in the Japanese version of Project?
Bought this one really cheap lately (jpn ver) and, well, yeah. I assume it's nice.
Sorry, I don't sound enthusiast. The fact is, I'm not exaclty the biggest fan of the series, and I already had DX, that is much more loaded with options.
So, from my particular standpoint having DX was probably enough.
I might change my mind when I'll get a bit more inside Raiden 1, though. So far Raiden II is clearly superior, but who knows... After all, what llabnip said about earlier Psikyo works was proven true to me.

same here. I bought my PlayStation on the official U.S. launch day in Sept 1995, with Ridge Racer, Toshinden (what a waste) and Raiden Project.Bishamon wrote:Raiden Project was one of the games I purchased with my PS1 at launch, and I still play it today. Simply awesome!
I played the **** out of Ridge Racer and Raiden II.
Raiden Project is in indeed great (I even like the ultra cheesy, fuzzy polygon "movie" intro). Also, someone here found a gameshark code which changes the TATE controls to normal if you decide to flip your TV for it. Tried finding the thread, wasn't too long ago...
EDIT: Found it in case u didn't know about the "true tate control" code:

Edit: Saving settings after using this code might allow you to not have to put in the code next time(s) you play as long as you don't change the screen settings. I'm too tired of fiddling around to check at the moment though.
The PS X-Change import boot disc has a cheat function, so if you don't have a cheat device and do have a PS1 this is probably the way to go.

Yeah, the Raiden Project is awesome! I can't really describe in words how much it wowed me-it was the most perfect arcade port that I had ever played of any shmup (or non-shmup for that matter!) on a home console.
BTW, I think tate is included in the Japanese release of the Raiden Project.

FYI, for anyone else looking for Raiden DX, you can also buy it brand new for $29.99 at www.japanvideogames.com . They are a GREAT online store for import PS1 games, and they're based here in the US, in California.SheSaidDutch wrote:Thanks Bullet MagnetBulletMagnet wrote:I think a copy is up on eBay now, starting at about 20 bucks new. Re: The Raiden Project freakin owns
This one is hard for me to grasp. Around here GameStop is completely worthless for anything prior to the XBOX. That's what makes me so sad about how they bought out EB Games. EB Games has always had better prices and better selection.LoneSage wrote:So yeah, after searching for it for at least two years, I found it at GameStop. Complete. For $15.
