Needing help of making caravan games

Hey guys , I am planning to create a caravan shmup which is mostly like the Soldier series, except with a horizontal twist, but what is the best engine on where to create this kind of shmup? This is because this project would take about 6 months to create but it will take time to create one, even for me as a shmupper.

Game Maker would be a pretty good suggestion for a tool you can use to program your caravan shmup.

I started my project with it but it's too basic (this is a tutorial) but ideal to learn "how to" and very good to start something !
