Rabio Lepus (AC, PC-E)

Post by Mero »

Welcome to the high score thread for Rabio Lepus (aka Rabbit Punch), the 1987 horizontal arcade STG from Video System.

Before you start, the game gives you a choice between Normal and Expert, the second of which is harder and has different enemies and higher scoring.
No continues, all defaults. Use autofire if you want.

Yay, it's my second new HS thread in 2 days!

Mero - 1,644,500 - ALL

This is the hardest ALL I've ever done. I've been playing the game on and off for absolutely ages and always kept falling at the final hurdle. I was able to finally do it this time by no missing stage 9 for the first time ever, then I managed to 2 miss stage 10 (the hardest level in the game, absolutely brutal at full rank) which allowed my to face the final boss with a 'spare' life in stock (stage 11 is much easier, thankfully).

Having another life to fall back on meant that I didn't get nervous and fuck up, I even managed to beat him without taking any damage :D .

EDIT:Image

I also added a proofpic to my Exzisus score for anyone who gives a shit.

Game 2

Mero - 1,127,200 - 7

This version of the game is much, much harder. The rank is high from the word go, there's tons more enemies and almost everything fires at you. Also the bosses have got about twice as much HP, the level 3 boss and the level 6 ghost boss both timed out on me.

You don't have to call it 'game 1' anymore, Normal Course will suffice

And keep going! If you can beat level 10 you're in with a chance of clearing the game.

Rabio Lepus had madly advanced graphics for its year and it was one of the only 1CCs that eluded us in the arcades. I'm interested in playing it again. Mero - are there any replays or tips you can provide :?:

Here's an expert course replay from nicovideo:

Part 1
Part 2

MARP has several normal course clears, though most require an ancient version of MAME.

It must be even harder than I thought if you couldn't finish it :o

I don't have a replay but I can give you a few pointers as to how I did it. Make sure you no miss the first 8 levels at least, the two biggest obstacles to success in this game are levels 9 and 10. Although Rabio Lepus isn't really a hardcore memoriser as such, memorisation of the levels is highly recommended. One reason for this is so that you'll know when the virtually indestructible lazer firing robots are about to come on screen - just stay out of their way until they leave the screen, by any means neccessary. They are the bane of this game and will kill you until you learn how to avoid thenm (I think you can kill them by getting in really close and punching them, but that's way too risky). Also use missiles on the bullet firing grey faces in places where there are too many of them, It'll save you from getting killled when the rank is high.

Rank is effected by survival time and missile stock, if you accumulate tons of missiles you can push the rank high as early as level 2.

Many Thanks Mero and saucykobold. I'm looking forward to giving it a go on my crusty Xbox MAME with no access to dips and moody stick with slow autofire.
Part 2 of the link works but Part 1 just came up with Japanese writing. It doesn't matter though, because the later stages were enough to give me the basics.

Cheers :D

Would you add another table for Rabio Lepus Special on the PCE?

If so:

Image

Perikles - 2,611,000 - 2-1

The second loop is just shy of impossible, whereas the first loop is surprisingly fun. It can be a tough cookie at times, although it never gets overbearing thanks to the short duration.

I'd been practicing this whole week to get a clear, and actually managed it, ha. The final level was a close call, considering I was on my last life by the time I reached stage 6, lost the ribbon to the dragon miniboss, and had to tough it out from there on out, considering this was my first time making it this far in the game. The final boss narrowly killed me with the arcing flame attack (since I didn't know how to react to his patterns). Phew!

I agree, Perikles, that the second loop seems a little ludicrous. I am not sure how the rest of the game plays, but if the first stage is any indication, its challenge comes chiefly from "Hey! Remember those little roadblocks we place to give you something to shoot at! Well now they take 4x as much damage and choke off key parts of the stage!"

I feel the game has a slight balance issue: there is a wide gulf of power between having the ribbon and not having the ribbon. That and the random nature of the item canisters really make things a crapshoot when you need those precious missile stocks and ribbons vs a, uh, rice bag? The gigantic hitbox and slightly pokey ship speed make things tricky, perhaps unnecessarily so, especially in stage 4 with lots of hard to reach enemies that like rushing into your backside from narrow passages. However, perhaps I shouldn't complain too hardily about a game that's only ~13 minutes in length; after all, I managed to clear it.

Arcade, Normal course

Image

Perikles - 2,679,300 - ALL

Video

I might have a clue how to achieve that ridiculous WR! I was looking at a clear video of the Expert course after beating the game on Normal and discovered that the player got several million points for hitting the mammoth boss with missiles (you possibly need the ribbon for this). I'll look into this, since - to my own bewilderment, I might add - I actually enjoy this one quite a bit. Randomized point items are still stupid, though.

Arcade, Normal course

Image

Perikles - 3,875,900 - ALL

Video (took the other one down)

That's much better! Some pretty bad mistakes in the middle, but all the tricky parts were handled fairly well. I managed to get a massive amount of points out of the mammoth boss this time, never got over 900,000 points before. I still have no clue how to squeeze several millions out of this fight, might be exclusive to the Expert course. This is also the first run where I got this many carrots in a single shower sequence, I only missed a single one in stage 9 (it's completely based on luck, though). Happy with the outcome, for sure, might look into Expert and further scoring on both courses in the future.

How about some genuine rabbit punch scoring, eh?

Arcade, Special Course
EmperorIng - 1,741,200 - 8
Image

Arcade, Normal Course
EmperorIng - 1,737,900 - ALL

(the higher score is from savestate practice)

Maybe I'll try to do a higher Normal course, maybe not. Special course really pisses me off (as does the game in general, lol). Here's a recorded, live commentary of the Normal clear for fun!

Next step: figure out how to do the mammoth bug. I've already got 2.7 million out of it in mame savestates. Ako, the madman, has gotten over 8 million.
