The Curious Mystery of the Vanishing Raystorm Jewel Case
The Curious Mystery of the Vanishing Raystorm Jewel Case
So I cracked out Raystorm (US PSX version) the other day to give it a bit of a play since I hadn't touched it in a while. Was eyeballing the PCB up for sale on the forums so I thought I'd see how much I liked it. Played it for a while...set the jewel case on top of a stack of unwatched DVDs in the corner next to the TV. Left the disc in the system. Forgot about both for a while. The jewel case sat there collecting dust and the game continued to sit in my system.
Flash foward about a week and a half or so to today. I went to play a game in my PS2...oh...there's the Raystorm disc. Better put that away. I go to look for the jewel case. GONE! No idea where it is...can't find it. I've torn my whole place apart looking for it and nothing. Zip. Nada. It's literally vanished into the ether. This is pretty weird cause the game and case were in my game room, and no one goes in here but me. My wife doesn't come in here. No one ever visits us (sad huh?). Things stay static in here for YEARS. But for the life of me I cannot find this goddamned jewel case. It's just out and out GONE.
Perhaps some sort of jewel case trolls stole it? Or it vaporized upon contact with something in my game room?
I've been ripping shit apart for over an hour trying to find it and I'm tired and frustrated now. This ever happen to anyone else? Maybe I have TOO much stuff.....
*sigh*

Happens with all sorts of things now and then. Sometimes even people disappear mysteriously, then reappear years later. In some languages there are names for this phenomenon. Dunno, spirited away?

There's a good possibility that it's right in front of you, you're just discarding the area because you think it's elsewhere.

This one's only marginally shmup-related, so I'm moving it to OT.

Have you checked under couches/chairs or behind every nook and cranny? This stuff can happen, it may be in item limbo, currently. Maybe when the time comes it will reappear.

Maybe you set more DVDs on top of it?

Maybe it's lying under my missing Sky Shark PCB?

Re: The Curious Mystery of the Vanishing Raystorm Jewel Case
THIS SHIT IS FOR REAL. One time after my grandpa passed away my parents went down to his house to clean it up and sort through things that were theirs, for someone in the family was going to start 'renting' out the house. Well, they found everything they were looking for except this ring from when they first got engaged or something. They looked in where it used to be, but it couldn't be found. They searched and searched every possible place, but to no avail, it could not be found. When they were finally about to give up search it randomly appeared in the middle of the room on the carpet. I imagine it was my grandpa being a weasel. DO YOU HAVE A WEASEL IN YOUR HOUSE?

Quite possibly. But you'd think a weasel would have eaten my pet rabbit....

Not if it's one of those weasels that's been trained to ruin sealed game collections by nibbling through the wrappers.maxlords wrote:drauch wrote:DO YOU HAVE A WEASEL IN YOUR HOUSE?

Perhaps the 4D lizard men are making a comeback?

Jeez, the threads that went on before I joined, eh? From reading it, ckm was either a genuine schizophrenic or doing a very convincing impersonation of one. I work at a psychiatric hospital, and sometimes patients will stand in front of my desk for hours a day blurting out endless streams of drivel like that.Dave_K. wrote:Perhaps the 4D lizard men are making a comeback?

Yes, the Taito FX-1B (pre-cursor to the Taito G-Net hardware) powered Raystorm PCB is the one to play/own. If you have a stereo equipped candy cab, by simply sliding the handy mono/stereo switch to stereo and plugging in the the appropiate stereo plug harness adapter, it's an awesome shmup visual/audio fest with sugar coated 44.1kHz CD quality goodness afforded of Zuntata BGM. Truly a legendary arcade shmup PCB title worth owning just for your private PCB collection all running at the usual arcade-spec 60fps framerate.
My local arcades never got such an Raystorm PCB in when it finally was released Stateside by Taito of America division. It was such a pricey PCB conversion kit indeed back in the day if bought brand new. Is regarded as the very last official Taito USA region PCB to be released in the USA before Taito of Japan shut down it's Taito of America arcade division branch down for good.

No no no. Different kind of weasel, guys. This type of weasel just LOVES to cause mischievous deeds and stuff. Like, would anyone other than a shmup fan want to hide a Raystorm jewel case? I really doubt the rabbit, or the wife would want to do such a thing. This type of situation is that of weasels. Making little things harder for us all with downright pleasure. I've seen them.

Re: The Curious Mystery of the Vanishing Raystorm Jewel Case
This is a true story. I was sweeping outside and came across a penny dated 1945. Picked it up and placed it in my pocket. The next day, was sweeping in the same area and found another penny. Upon closer inspection, it too, was dated 1945. WTF!? Picked it up and placed in my pocket. What are the odds of finding two pennies dated the same year from the WWII era two days apart? Hmmm.....
Yeah, I've had some items dissappear and mysteriously reappear again later...seems something like out of the Twlight Zone indeed. Cue in the famous TZ music.

Okay...PC Engine Fan, I think you are in over your head...odds are good you may be dealing with a weasel. He/her probably placed them there to get your attention and your hopes up. At some point you will probably find the pennies missing. This is weasels.

Re: The Curious Mystery of the Vanishing Raystorm Jewel Case
Similar thing has happened to me, but in kind of an opposite manner, an item seemed to appear out of no where.
At a time I was borrowing Star Ocean 2 on the PSX to a friend, he played it for a while, and at one point he told me that he had two sets of the 2nd disc and he didn't know where the other disc came from. When I wanted the game back, he said it was fine, because he had an extra 2nd disc. We just assumed that our enjoyment of the game caused the disc itself to respawn.

There is no need to argue or second guess. You pretty much just have to deal with it. THIS IS WEASELS.
