Border Down Music not so bad, IMO....

Post by dave4shmups »

Been downloading vids from that new FTP site; and I don't see why someone once described the music in BD as being "bad porn music"; I don't think it's half bad!

O__________o
I think I remember you saying you've never used an FTP client before this... so maybe we shouldn't be poking around in SmartFTP's settings...

But if you know what the files are called, try running a search on your hard drive, under Start Menu-> Search (assuming you're using Windows..)

edit: I guess you found them after all?

About pr0n music... I don't think Border Down's music is like that at all.
BUT, the GBA version of R-Type III ended up sounding like BAD pr0n music to me, especially in the first stage.

The music changes a lot throughout the game, even when you play on different borders...so some levels might be light jazz fusion while others are more traditional, it is a very eclectic soundtrack. I don't really dig all of it, but its so mixed it can't easily be dismissed.

And don't let rando find this thread, he'll smack us all down for even questioning how great the BD soundtrack is...

'Fraid that BioMetal is the king of Bad Shmup Soundtracks as far as I'm concerned...BD is Beethoven in comparison, heh.

You can definitely hear the Zuntata influences in Border Down's OST. And Zuntata seem to be very hit-or-miss with many players.

man, i've said it before and i'll say it again: On border down, instead of the music sounding like a badass dogfight or an epic space battle, it sounds like a big gay party. i dont know any other way to describe it. level 2 and 3 make me want to vomit. i just can't stand it

As i wrote in my review (uh, need to check though), the said soundtrack won the Arcadia prize for 2003 (best VGM).The author is Yasuhisa Watanabe, aka Yack, ex-Zuntata member, who also did:

Sylvalion
Runark (Growl)
Master of Weapons
Gunfrontier
Metal Black
Pulirula
Kaiser Knuckle
Elevator Action returns
Land Maker
Puchi Carat

and other stuff i'm forgetting. Not for narrow-minded omophobic people, i'd add.
"The only desire the Culture could not satisfy from within itself was one common to both the descendants of its original human stock and the machines [...]: the urge not to feel useless."

I.M. Banks, "Consider Phlebas" (1988: 43).

Hey Rando, do you still have all that stuff you wrote for BD and Garegga and what not to repost in the strategy guide or is it lost?

I still don't like the game's music. Metal Black's music is a lot more tolerable. THis stuff just makes me want to puke. Along with i don't really care for the game anyway.

uhh... die plz? thx...

seriously though... give the music a try... listen to the cd a few times, and you'll find that at some point you'll fall in love with it... it happened to me... it's the kind of music that you have to devote attention to, though... not just play in the background...

still... "bad pron music"? wtf? lol... i guess even "bad pron music" is still too classy for some though ;P

You've got to give it a little more credit than simply brushing it off as "Bad Porn Music." Hell, at least they were kind enough to not throw in random moans in to throw us all off

I will admit that most of the tracks are really hit or miss. Tracks like Upon the New Raid(Track 03), Morning Kisses(Track 21), Girl of Power(Track 05), and even the simple jingle that is S.D.F.(Track 02) are all nicely arranged and feel appropriate in the game.

However, there is the ugly side as well. Border Line(Track 14) and Fleet Game(Track 08 ) come to mind as tracks that I definately could have done without.

All in all, it's not the best soundtrack ever graced upon a Shmup, but it isn't the worst either. Definately worth a good listenthrough or two before you pass judgement.

(Note: I used track numbers and titles based on the OST release I have on my PC here. If they are slightly different from the actuals I apologize.)

Ugh, I hear some of these comments and my question is, how far have you played through the game. The first level I think has rather uninteresting music but it seems to pick up from there--plus, the game play picks up from there too! I don't know how one can even look at the third level and talk about bad music or gameplay!

How much have you actually played BD?

Uhh... I couldn't find Omophobic in the Dictionary...

But really, the music varies way too much to be called pr0n music. Stage 4's two orchestral themes are anything but pr0n music.

I haven't heard it. But I found the pr0n comment funny as I've heard other games that feature music that made me think exactly that. Or elevator music. But I can't comment on Border Down.

Just an aside : While I disagree about BD sounding like porn music; Yack did score a Hentai game not longe after BD called Majokko de Go' Go'. It's quite an "ear-opener" ;)

I never said I don't import at all.

I just said I don't import on the PS2.

I do import on the PS1 - well ... 2 games at least ;) Raiden DX and Gradius Gaiden.

Does the swap magic work well?

Not every track is pure greatness, but overall BD has some of the best (and most unusual) shooter music I've heard in a long time. I fully agree with Arcadia's award.

WTF is that supposed to mean? :?

I think it's a brilliant soundtrack, although I like some of his older stuff a lot more (or newer, check out Senko no Ronde!).

I still claim that the Metal Black OST is the best game soundtrack ever made. :)

Border Down has the greatest music of any "128+-bit" generation shmup I've ever heard. Truly one of my favorite soundtracks, you can just get lost in the music and vibe out to the game.

I'd have to say that the BD soundtrack is the greatest Videogame soundtrack so far. It's also one of my favourite albums and takes pride of place amongst my CDs.

I think having a relaxing Jazzy soundtrack playing while you're flying around and killing stuff was/is a fantastic idea and worked really well. Far preferable to all that crap euro-dance and lame 'metal' soundtracks (and no I don't hate metal, i'm in 2 metal bands!! I just think it has yet to be done properly in a videogame).

man what a great game, must dig it out soon.

For some reason your post reminded me that I have the OST.

hm to be honest i don't like it either, but i never was a zuntata fan except for layer section, that one soundtrack was great.
it is especially the 1st and 2nd level of BD that i find grating.

It sucks. Doesn't add any atmosphere or urgency to the proceedings at all. Just seems an odd, completely unsuitable accompaniment.

One of the best videogame soundtracks around. Don't care for the game itself much, though.

I like it, I think it's fitting. Too bad they did't use "Upon the new raid - Arrange" (Track 27 of the LE soundtrack CD) in the actual game. (or did they?)

No arranged tracks were used in the game AFAIK. Remix mode in the DC port has a completely different soundtrack though, it's great aswell.
