Why are PMs on this board so wonky?

Post by MachineAres 1CC »

I've been sending PMs back and forth with a number of people in the last few months, and almost every time I try to send a message, it sits in my Outbox for many hours and sometimes days. Up until I deleted it yesterday, I think I had one sitting in there for about 8 days that still hadn't sent. Is there some board option I'm missing that sends messages immediately? Sometimes it'll randomly send the message right away, then others it will sit there for days on end. Does this happen to anyone else and is there a way to get around it?

Thanks if anyone can help

Does the message sit in the outbox until the recipient reads it? This could explain the inconsistent times.

I don't know if it works that way, because when you're dealing with e-mail, though an email account or Microsoft Outlook, etc. the "Outbox" is where a message sits when its in the process of sending but not sent yet. The message system on here may be a little different, but I don't know. Mods, admins? Can you shed any light on this?

If the message is sitting in the outbox, it's because the other person hasn't logged in yet. The moment he does, the message is sent and it goes away from your outbox.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression the message stays listed in your outbox until the message is actually read by the recipient.

You're not wrong, that's how it works. After they've read the message, it goes to the sentbox. As long as it's still in the outbox, you can edit it.

That seems to be the case. Thanks guys, this is confusing coming from using Microsoft Outlook every day at work where "Outbox" means something completely different.

Just imagine for those of us that grew up on a farm.

It'll be esp. confusing since on other forum types, PMs are sent immediately like emails. Best get used to phpBB now. Don't delete anything in your outbox that's not a mistake.

On a sidenote, i find the PM limit to be retarded.
When i open up a new folder, i can store 100 PMs again without losing any of the old ones.
So why is there a limit in the first place?
This makes it rather inconvenient, because i have to send messages from the inbox to other
folders to make room, things get scattered across different folders and its really a pain to deal with.

I like the system on AO, theres a setting to automatically delete the older PM's in a sort of FIFO queue :) Never have to manually delete your pm's again.

You can lose important ones that way though. Well... those of us that don't keep our box nice and clean.

I have a 500 message box on there instead of 100, plus I don't really need to hold on to pm's for months really, usually just someones address to send something to or whatever and thats done in a day or two.

That setting is here too. Same forum software.

I imagined it would be, but I don't get enough pm's to warrant enabling it here :)
