Any New Music Recommendations?

Post by freddiebamboo »

What's everyone listening to right now? If possible give a link to preview it.

I'm loving Jamie Lidell's Multiply, particularly the title track + Music will not last.

New as in newly released? Right now it's Big Business, which is a Seattle band from a former Karp and Murder City Devils guy (bass and drums). Highly reminiscent of Karp, which I really like. If you like indie rock/older metal (Motorhead, Melvins): one song here.

Tristesse de la Lune - A Heart whose Love is innocent

sorry, no link availlable. If you like Blutengel, Apoptygma Berzerk, VNV Nation, Funker Vogt, you should check it out. Tristesse de la Lune consists of the backing vocals from Blutengel, pretty spherical, aetheric form of EBM with uncommon lyrics (ie they don´t sing about pain, death, blood, vampires, S&M etc. all the time)

Seattle is the rock 'n roll richest city on the planet, but it's always shocking to see what everyone not from Seattle (and most from Seattle) choose to listen to. I guess I should just be thankful that we seem to be past that stupid fucking grunge stigmata from the early-mid 90s.

For the last couple years I've been listening almost exclusively to rock music from the Seattle area. Three of my many faves right now are Zeke, The Spits and The Earaches. There are many more but most people don't listen to the super trashy simpleton rock that I like.

Check out the Baseball Furies if you like your rock straight forward and dirty. Simple stuff to be sure but excellent for what it is.

The new Nile album is pretty brutal. I'm enjoying the new Pelican album as well.

Also, though there's only two original songs on it, "Our Last Day" by Discordance Axis is pretty freaking crazy if you like grindcore.

Oh, a band I have to plug though: The Red Sparrowes. It's made up of members of Isis, Neurosis, and Halifax Pier. It's completely instrumental. It's a bit hard to classify.

Lamb of God or the new Raging Speedhorn album, How the Great have fallen. British metal at its best.

I have been broke as of late, so haven't been able to afford to buy new music. However, I have been digging some classic thrash lately. Anacrusis' "Screams and Whispers" got a couple spins the other day.

Om - Variations on a theme. The drummer and bassist from Sleep carrying on from Dopesmoker. Best album I've heard this year.

Right now I'm listening to a lot of stuff, but one band that keeps rising to the top of the pile is The Immortal Lee County Killers. Great post-blooze noise in the Pussy Galore style, only better. John Peel loved these guys (R.I.P., John  ), and so do I.

So Pacrappa, ya like Zeke too, huh? Have you checked out The Bulimics? I think they did a split CD (or 7 inch, I can't remember) with Zeke a while back. Good Black Flag-meets-Motorhead rawk. The vocalist, Gerry, is also a super nice guy, to boot.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that in my mellower, more introspective moments I've been really digging "Fielding" by Hala Strana. This album is brilliant, and happens to be on a label run by one of the members of this board, but I'll leave it up to him to reveal himself. The label honcho is a really nice guy, as well  .

I pretty much stopped listening to anything that wasn't 20 years old years ago, and I think it's been over a year and a half since I last bought a music CD (not counting a couple of game OSTs.) I might have to pick up the new Aquabats album at some point though.

i'll second Discordance Axis - Our Last Day

the remaster of "ikaruga" is possibly my favorite song by them. (and they are my favorite band.) The Mortalized covers are incredible, and the Gridlink gets played on repeat too much for my own health.

other stuff I've been listening to lately:

Autechre - Untilted
really effed up techno, very complex and idiosyncratic. lots of macrostructural development and microscopic fluxuations of repetive sounds.

TEF - cd on Harshnoise
awesome harsh noise (think Merzbow) in a structured, fluid style. Exceptionally well constructed, with great production quatliy as well!

Trojan Upsetter Box Set
this is old, not new, or at least the music is, Most of it is from 1968-1979. A couple snoozers here and there, but for the most part, this set is really great. 50 tracks across 3 cds for $19.99. Classic proto-reggae and lots of dubby goodness from Lee Perry. I'm relatively new to enjoying reggae/dub; I find I only like the stuff before 1980 or so, which explains why I've never enjoyed the style before, heh.

Sunn0))) - The Grimm Robe Demos
dirge doesn't even begin to describe it. I think this is the slowest album I own, slower than Corrupted... unbelievably heavy waves of endless guitar sustain and analog synth pulses. no vocals, no drums, just monstrous blackened guitars. Awesome liner notes too. recently reissued, originally in 1999; remastered by John Wiese and it sounds great.

Pixies - Doolittle
again, old, but a classic. so good.

I got Coco d'Or Parfait in the mail last week so that's what I've been listening to, although it's not exactly NEW new, I think it was released sometime last year but I just found out about it and bought it.
hiro's Japanese accent while singing the English songs is somewhat crippling, although it's nice to hear the new arrangements of the classic jazz tunes. I remember hearing "Orange Colored Sky" for the first time at a swing dance event, played by a live band and not knowing what the song was called but thinking it was a very good song. Well, there's a version of it on this CD!

Right now, I'm waiting for "swingin' street" by dorlis to arrive in the mail. I bought this because I heard one of the songs featured on DrumMania/Guitar Freaks V and I absolutely loved it, and promptly sent play-asia $30 USD for the import CD. Since it's on the newest GF/DM mix, it's pretty new.

Amongst others, the latest NIN 'With Teeth'. Still trying to figure out what to make of it though.

For the last month or so though, I've had the first LP by the Icarus Line, 'Mono', on constant rotation. Dunno whether the term Punk Rock has any relevance any more or not, but if it does, this is it. A trashy, messy ungodly howl of a record that seems to be much better known here in the UK than the US they hail from. Follow up, 'Pennance Soiree' is a different kettle of fish though.

And anything by Planes Mistaken For Stars. If you like dirty, hardcore-influenced ROCK AND FUCKING ROLL, you need to hear these guys.

I doubt many others here have similar tastes in music, but I recently raided the massively extensive supply of sample mp3s at the Lookout Records webpage, found several bands I'm really digging. My favorite among them is Common Rider. I also really like Even in Blackouts, I'm a sucker for a female lead singer. The Riverdales have a nice Ramones style. Screeching Weasel is good, I'm liking The Lillingtons and The Queers, and Ted Leo and the Pharmicist was the first of the Lookout bands I'm new to that clicked with me.

A friend of mine also recently introduced me to a friend's band, called Electric Tooth Syndrome. They've got some nice stuff, my favorite of which is a series of covers from Nirvana's Nevermind album. I don't really like Nirvana, but I like what they've done with the songs, they feel like they've got something of an REM influence, especially Teen Spirit.

I've been listening to Autechre's Untilted on and off. It's... alright. Some of the tracks like Pro Radii (love the bit at the end especially, where that creepy background noise comes in behind the drums going fully at it) and Fermium rock but then it throws crap like Iera at me and I just go listen to Draft or Chiastic Slide or something. You can preview it at http://www.warprecords.com , go to the "Albums" bit at the top, find it (it's like third to last, the grey one) and click "Audio" next to any of the tracks. And as Ataru said, it (and anything they've done post-LP5) is quite effed up. :D

Also been listening to Underworld's Second Toughest in the Infants (although I wouldn't call that "new" :P) and the recent re-issue of DJ Shadow's Endtroducing...

If you're into ambient stuff the soundtrack to Mysterious Skin is truly awesome. It was composed by Harold Budd and Robin Guthrie.

All I've been listening to for a while now has been this, Labradford, Stars of the Lid, and the Blade Runner soundtrack. I feel like I'm living in a sci-fi movie or something haha

Oh and Felt Mountain by Goldfrapp is really great CD. I highly recommend it

I heard good things about Felt Mountain but I've listened to some other Goldfrapp songs (most of Black Cherry) and didn't really like 'em, is FM really different from BC?

Yes, in fact, its QUITE different than BC. FM was their debut. Its really more like Bjorks orchestral stuff than BC, as it also has orchestral backing. It almost sounds like a score to something at times, I think (in a weird kind of way it reminds me ALOT of Final Fantasy VIII, heh). If you didnt know, you'd probably think FM and BC were done by different bands.

My favorite songs are Lovely Head, Pilots, and Paper Bag.

Autechre - Untilted. i really enjoy their new album. i got to see them live in Minneapolis a month ago, and that show was just nucking futz.

Shpongle - Nothing Lasts...But Nothing is Lost. all of their stuff is just...weird. but the final album sure isn't dissapointing. One 67 minute song split into 20 tracks or somehting, interesting concept.

Coldplay - X&Y. Not much needs to be said here.

Jamie Lidell - Multiply. this just OOZES groove. i love it.

Quinoline Yellow - Dol Gay Assist. it's on Skam records. so it's good. people dissapointed with Autechre's "Untilted" seem to be calling this the album Autechre should have made.

Four Tet - Everything Ecstatic. this album is awesome. no one should go without listening to Four Tet at least once.

Quasimoto - Further Adventures of Lord Quas... it's Madlib. nuff said.

Prefuse 73 - Surrouned by Silence. alot of prefuse fans seem to hate this album, but i don't think it's too bad. the collab with The Books definitely saves it.

the new Foo Fighters is good too.

That's odd:

1.) Usually these threads bring up obscure (at least to me) indie, metal, and techno artists (and nothing else). The Aquabats are pretty much as far as you can get from that. I plan on seeing them this summer on tour... I've wanted to since high school but never got around to it.

2.) I don't see the Aquabats being all that popular in the "these bands today all suck" crowd. ;)

Please, do it. Rock and Roll of the highest order. Makes sure it's their first LP 'Mono' though, 2nd LP 'Pennance Soiree' is a little tamer, goes off into more of a sleaze-rock, feedback kinda vibe, still rules though. Try www.buddyhead.com, I'm sure there are some audio clips on there. And make sure you read the gossip and record review pages as well, surely the funniest thing on the web.

No, but there's also nothing new in any of those genres worth listening to. At least not if you've heard the old stuff.
