Fixing the DC's drive lid mechanism ?

Post by Fudoh »

I've got a hardly used DC. I probably used it once per year for the past decade and every 2nd time I used I had to fix the drive lid mechanism. Sometimes I can play for 30 minutes, sometimes only for 2 minutes, until the DC thinks the drive lid is open and returns the main menu.

I usually fixed this by adding some tape to the actual level pushing back the switch on the mainboard. By now, it's pushed to max and it's again starting to reset during play. Now I was wondern - before I take the DC apart, anyone fixed the drive lid switch directly on the mainboard ? Is there an easy way to simple short the MB connection to make the DC think the lid's actually always closed ??

Any help would be appreciated! And no, it's not the usual power problem where the DC resets because the power connection from the PSU to the mainboard sucks, it's really the actual drive lid switch on the right back on the mainboard.

hiya Fudoh , i havent had to fix that type of problem before but im thinking of 3 possible fixes.........

1. Obtaining a replacement GD-Rom Drive Board
2. Reflowing the solder on the Lid Switch
3. Removing the Lid Switch and bridging the solder points so the Dreamcast thinks the Lid is closed

hope this helps

I have a first version Japanese DC. When I got it, the switch was soldered across to make the DC act as if the lid was always closed. That was how they ran imports then, by swapping the disc as it was spinning!
