Did you attend the 2010 CAX show? DDP-DOJ spotted there...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

Out of the wilds at this year's 2010 California Extreme show, a plain vanilla "White Label" DDP-DOJ was shown for both days courtesy of fellow shmupper gibbous' cool Sega Swing candy cab and myself furnishing the ol' DDP-DOJ PCB for all to try out. Got to meet a few fellow shmuppers including NOAH, Rei, Dave K. and a few others. Perhaps if we all had some cool Shmup.org T-Shirts, it'd easier to let the CAX attendees know more about the shmups.com/shmups.org site.

It was the first time ever that a Cave arcade shmup PCB has been properly shown in it's fourteen years of being hosted.

One fellow shmupper's comment heard about DDP-DOJ was "It sucks balls" which is very true due to it's unforgiving and relentless nature of hurling a storm of bullets your way. It'd sure be cool see what other Cave arcade shmup PCBs and/or other shmup titles will be shown at the upcoming 2011 CAX event. Hope to meet some you cool shmup cats the next time around.

Fellow shmupper gibbous' Sega Swing candy cab was a very beautiful upright candy cab...was the first time I've personally seen one of them.

A very big thanks to gibbous for his kindness and generousity of allowing me to show DDP-DOJ at this year's 2010 CAX show.

----------------------
On Saturday night, there was a very special screening of the famed 1983 "Joysticks" film from writer/director Greydon Clark. After the screening, a cool Q&A session by both Greydon Clark and actor Jim Greenleaf about the Joysticks film was an event not to be missed.

Learned that it was made with a budget of $300,000 USD...considered low-budget back in the early 1980s. Was filmed in three weeks in the Los Angeles area in 1982 and released nationwide in 1983. Was the #1 movie in American upon it's intial debut...is regarded as the only film to cover the arcade game mania sweeping the country during the "Golden Age" of arcade gaming. It was originally released in 35mm print format & released on home video VHS tape format by Vestron Video circa 1983 (in 4:3 screen format as was standard for Hollywood films back in those days).

The famous titty shot of the busty blond gal shown in the film, Mr. Clark admitted that it took three days of filming that particular key scene. Seems like they couldn't get enough of that eye popping candy indeed. Mr. Clark also said that the blond gal was a "Playmate of the Month" model, so no wonder she looks great in the film. ^_~

Man, that's too bad.. I threw out my back and couldn't make it this year. I heard Magical Truck Adventure was there, too!

Another key highlight was a kick-ass Sega Naomi powered three CRT-screen endowed Sega Ferrari 355 deluxe cabinet at the 2010 CAX show. The owner of it told me that it was powered by four Naomi boards: one for each CRT monitor & one to run the game PCB itself. Beautiful racing game indeed. The last time I've personally tried out a three-screen endowed Ferrari cab was at a Sega Joypolis game center in the famed Akihabara district of Tokyo back in early 2000.

Was great to finally meet PCEFX! in person! mdl and papanovember where also there, too bad I missed noah.

I snapped a few pics here of that sweet Sega Swing cab, and a few of the cocktail cabs.

I must have missed that Magical Truck Adventure cab...is that new or old?

And that Sega F355 was mint...shifter and clutch worked better than the ones I played at Dave and Busters.

A few more cool "Joysticks" movie factoids: Greydon said all the various arcade game cabinets shown in the film were rented out from various arcade distributors in the Southern California area and returned once principal filming was completed. He also said that the film crew would be playing those games between shooting and it was hard to make a film with that going on at the same time.

That "swing" cab sure is a nice looking cab. I had never seen one before. I played your doj at the show a few times. Never got past the middle of stage 2 on a credit, but I suck at shmups anyway - as much as I do love playing them. Had a lot of fun at the show, played almost everything at least once. The pikes peak(?) / ice cold beer machines were fun. Will hafta try and find one for sale. My wife played tapper for the first time and fell in love with it...

Edit: "zeke's peak" - it was almost directly across from ddpdoj.

I had a friend who was there and saw your DDP DOJ up there, he mentioned that he heard who brought it and mentioned your handle to me. Your posts are memorable and the 1st things I asked was if he saw you in person (he didn't, or if he did he had no idea). I almost wish I were there to just see what your like in person.

I don't know how many dealers are there? Carlson was there for sure and I know him also. Do you come to magfest PC Engine Fan X ? We have a good list of Cave titles and other PCBs in candies there, along with all the other classic cabs others bring. We have a good arcade when it's all set up... rather large also.

I really encourage others from here to come to magfest. There is alot of shmup and PCB love there and love for folks to bring anything we might not have ect. The cabs are on 24/7, along with the console ect.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

For Strider77,

I'm glad your friend was able to try out the DDP-DOJ PCB. I haven't attended any of the cool Magfest events that you have mentioned of...sounds like it worth paying a visit for the cool Cave PCBs shown there.

Yeah, there were some cool dealers there at this year's CAX show including MadGear.com (aka 16-bit seller on eBay). Bought a couple of import console games from him. Sure had a great selection of both console and PC doujin shmup titles to choose from including for the Famicom, SFC, MD, PSX, SS, PCE, etc. Saw a lone SS copy of Radiant Silvergun with a pricetag of $229.99 USD but no takers on it. It was easily the most expensive game at his dealer's table indeed.

For some reason everyone who has seen him says he looks like this:

Sweet pics, Dave. Looks like a few of those guys had shirts they saved from the American arcade era.

One last Joysticks film factoid: The director Mr. Clark said during the Q&A session after the film screening, since he didn't have any money to pay the arcade game manufacturers to show off their arcade game cabinets in the film, he went up to Bally Midway MFG Co. and asked if they had any cool arcade games to show off for this new upcoming film about the American arcade scene. Bally Midway said that they had a hot new game title worthy of promoting. It was the newest Pac-Man arcade game of "Super Pac-Man" that got free publicity/promotion with the Joysticks film and Bally Midway was pleased with it. Free publicity/promotion can't hurt, especially when you have a film that was distributed nationwide during the heyday of the American arcade scene. No other film director decided to take the plunge with the arcade game fad back in those days but with Greydon Clark, he definitely made an exception. A lightbulb went off in his head, and Mr. Clark said he could make a film featuring arcade games.

So you now know a bit more about the background history of the cool 1983 flick that is known as "Joysticks".

Big thanks, PCE Fan! It was great to meet you and it was my first chance to play any DDP title. The only foreign console I own is a Saturn and I've read that the DDP port for Saturn isn't so good, plus I don't really have the scratch to buy Cave pcb's unfortunately. Got to meet Rei also, pretty good player. I'm sad to see that Dave K. was there since I didn't get to see him. The guy gave me a great deal on an NBA Jam cabinet w/ extras a couple years ago. Haven't had a chance to see or talk to him in about a year and a half. Big thanks to gibbous also for the Sega Swing.

The show was cool, but would likely be a letdown for anyone that's solely into shmups. PCE Fan's DDP DOJ was the only shmup this side of Raiden. I really wanted to play that F355, but it was occupied and then some every time I checked on it. Cockpits/sit-downs were popular at the show. I couldn't get on a single one.

For NOAH,

Yeah, Dave K. was spotted on the last day of the 2010 CAX show. He was the guy wearing a gray-colored T-Shirt with the famous Battle Garegga logo silk-screened on the back. Cool to learn that he sold you a NBA Jam cab...I did see an NBA Jam cab at the CAX show. Btw, is it possible to upgrade a regular NBA-Jam PCB into a Tournament Edition NBA-Jam PCB with a few simple eeproms or would that require buying a wholly seperate PCB kit instead?

It was nice to chat with Dave and catch up on some shmup related topics. He and I were wondering whom was going to win the Grand Prize raffle which was held at 4:00pm later that Sunday afternoon. Bodies literally jampacked with "balls to the walls" wondering just whom is gonna claim/win the big prize. I bought ten tickets and he bought just two. Neither of us won but it was an older gentleman whom ended up winning and chose the cool "Road Trip" pinball table. It looked like it was in super nice mint condition for it's age (quite possibly cleaned up and restored to it's original glory) -- it was playable during both days of the CAX event.
