Uh... What's TATE? (stop laughing...)

Post by gamingjustin »

People use the term TATE so casually 'round here... I know that Ikaruga has it... but... how does it work? I can understand that on a computer monitor the resolution is tighter horizontally than vertically... but a TV is (in my case) a square... So how can fliping it on its side make any difference?

Just gimme a breakdown on TATE, please. Then I'll be satisfied.

Well, in the usual case a tv screen is not a square but a rectangle. Setting your tv on its side can allow a vertical shooter to take up the entire screen, as in the arcade.

Oh... Hm, intriguing. So what does TATE stand for? Is it, like, an acronym?

Tate has 2 meanings, one is just the Japanese term for 'flipped vertical' or you can be a dumb American about it and say it's Ro-TATE for short.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

In the case of the former (the Japanese word), it's pronounced "tah-tay".

What's D's site? I think it's http://turn.to/vertical or something. Has lots of tate-related info.

:D Well said. Someone here actually has the kanji for it as their avatar. I thought that was quite clever.

Maybe I'll use the kanji for yoko (horizontal) as mine.

Pedantic bastard time! The word tate doesn't mean specifically 'flipped vertical". It's more just a generic word meaning 'vertical' or 'height'. Yoko, something else you may see, refers to 'horizontal' or 'width'.

Then again, I don't know Japanese and I got all this from freedict.com.

I actually reacted when I heard someone in 'Spirited Away' say TATE last week. It was translated as "stand up", and indeed, Rumi stood up ;)

I am using mame to play games like strikers 1945. I have yet to figure out how to rotate the game. Pressing T for tilt does nothing. I did not see anything in the dip switches.

Any help please?

If you're using the command line, it's -rol for rotate left (which is how most LCDs with swivel bases will rotate) or -ror for rotate right (which is how most console games with TATE mode will rotate the screen.

Okay, here's how the word works.

tate ?c = vertical
yoko ‰¡?@= horizontal

What you heard in Spirited Away:
tatsu —§‚ = to stand
tatte —§‚Á‚Ä (pronunciation is different) is the ~te form of that verb. Can be commanding form, or a number of other things. Who knows without context.

To "make something tate" or "tate something" would be tate ni suru. It's really not game terminology. The first time I TATE'ed my TV, my wife, who hates games and knows dick about them, said "It's TATE'ed".

Conversely, to "lay down" (for a nap) you would say yoko ni naru.

Yeah, well, I'd expect something like that coming from someone whose mother was a hamster.

Whatever. If your choice is to continue to ignore moderator advice, it will be considered repeat violation, no amount of smileys will change that.
