Noitu Love 2- Wii U, 3DS, Steam

Post by evil_ash_xero »

Copied and pasted from Sega 16 Forums-

I have been playing this game a lot lately, and I think it would appeal to anybody who likes Treasure games. It plays kind of like mix of Astro Boy: Omega Factor and Murasama, with touches of Treasure and Konami throughout.

It's one of those indie games, but trust me, it looks totally pro. I usually don't like indie games, or I think they're overrated(Cave Story is good....but come one, it's not Super Metroid). This is also gonna make it to WiiWare, but why not check it out now?

The game is made by ONE guy. Here's his website: http://www.konjak.org/

It's called Noitu Love 2. Here's a link to demo: http://www.konjak.org/nl2demo.zip

The thing about the demo is that it is of the first stage, so you really don't see how the game switches it up as it goes on. You may think it's just a button masher. It gets REALLY cool.
The game is not free, unfortunately, but you can see why. Now, you can easily find it on Torrents. Not that i'm recommending you to do that, but it is.

It plays with the keyboard and the mouse. You MUST use the mouse(you'll see, once you get the demo). As for the keyboard...if you're like me, that's just not an option. Download Joy2Key, and set up your pad to take over the up,down, left, and right arrows. Everything else is used with the mouse.

Here's links to vids of probably my two favorite stages. The stage 6 boss is just awesome.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Q8vgUZyKw

I'm just so impressed with this game, and thought this was exactly the right place to spread the love.

Here's some pix:

Game is amazing. My favourite run n gun ever (never mind that there's no gun until you unlock the other characters). As good as Treasure's best, easily - no 'for an indie game' qualifier necessary.
Make sure you play Chalk and Legend of Princess too, as they are awesome.
Fun fact: konjak did some spritework for Contra IV.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Yeah, I knew about the work he did on C4. I like the little HC reference in the game(in the pix above). He should remake the first one, since it kind of sucked.

Ah, I just played this (and it's not-quite-as-fun predecessor) the other day. I'm a bit tempted to buy it, but I think I'll wait 'n see how the Wii port turns out. It'd just be a bit more convinient for me.

I didn't like the first one much at all. Too much repetition, too little platforming...and it looked poor. The second one is a MAJOR step up.

The thing I worry about is how it will control. Using the game pad, and the mouse is ideal. So, i'm guessing with the Wii, you'd use the Nunch..uh, forgot how to spell it, and the Wiimote to imitate the mouse. I would rather use a controller to control the girl, rather than the other thing the Wii uses. If they set it up where you could use the Classic Controller, and you could use the right stick to control the target, well, that would be interesting.

The reason I put this up now, is because it has recently been announced by Golgoth, and Golgoth haven't released ANYTHING yet. So, I wouldn't sit on my hands or anything. It could be a while. Hell, they could fall through.

This game is pretty sweet, way better than the first.

I always feel terrible for konjak because he is a gamer's doujin developer stuck in a western indie artwank world. I think he said something about being frustrated about this once (not worded like that of course), not sure. If this poor guy was Japanese, he would have more appreciation.

Oh god, I have a pretty thick skin, but nothing in this world bothers me more than all the opportunistic indie leechers who port people's games to DS/Wii or offer up HUMBLE INDIE BUNDLES and all that shit. It's sad but it really bugs me for some reason, and if you don't already understand I don't even feel like explaining it.

Easy now, Golgoth seem like the real deal to me. The guys who run the show have actually, you know, been involved with the nuts and bolts of game development before. They're doing the Toki remake because they did the Amiga port back in the day and have an affection for the game. They're doing the grunt work for NL2 on Wiiware (coding and stuff), while konjak is basically just getting paid.

I for one think it's a good thing that more people will play these games. People who refuse to play a PC game only because it's on the PC deserve this kind of shit. The "graphical enhancements" Cave Story received serve them right. You know, this sort of people who don't even deign to try out the Gridrunner Revolution demo, because they think it'd be better as a 360 game.

I would if they actually released it here.
I bought NL2 for $20 and it was well worth it. Not sure if I wanna double dip. If they throw in some extras, maybe.

I saw this game over at HG101 and thought it looked very neat, and it is admirable that the creator totally overhauled the graphics for part 2. It definitely puts lots of commercial games to shame. Konami can't stop recycling 10 year old sprites for Castlevania games and make levels that don't repeat the same 2 screens 40 times, for instance. Let's not even get at how bland a lot of the content is either.

I haven't played ANY artsy indie games, but that's out of avoiding them. This game is pseudo J completely. Well, if he does get lost in the indie scene, he can get noticed on an actual game system(more or less). I'm glad these games make it to WiiWare, or whatever, since otherwise they're kind of gonna be lost and forgotten completely. I hope it makes it to WiiWare just so I can see it on a CRT. My LCD makes it look really pixelated.

Despite my little jab at Cave Story, I did like it, and am glad it made it to WiiWare.

Speaking of Cave Story, isn't this just a lovely piece of fan art:

I have tried a few of his other games, but really wasn't that into them. The first NL, was not very good. Chalk, while interesting, isn't my thing. Legend of Princess was OK, but that's all I can say about it. I can definitely see a game LIKE LOP being really good, if he came up with his own stuff, and really went for it.
NL 2 is his best game, and there's a reason it's the only one that costs money.
Chalk 2....well, i'll give it a shot, once it comes out, since I think he has improved a good bit since Chalk 1. He's got talent, but sometimes it doesn't all click together.
The only issue I have with NL 2 is the first stage, how the darns come at you in these little tight groups, that just sort of appear in exactly the same way, over a little stretch. Seemed kind of repetitive. But that's it, and it was only for a brief time.

Funny how I had to click "quote" for this post...

Anyway, I saved Curly Brace, and am now on my way to Hell. However, it's really frikkin' hard, and I can't even get through the Cave leading up to the last bosses. Argh.

I'm going to get it.

Also Konjak is in the middle of work on another title - a really lush-looking metroidvania called The Iconoclasts. I got a demo and it is really pretty damn neat though quite short.

I just bought this. It's pretty fun, but it seems prone to crashing. I haven't been to stage 5 yet because it's frozen on me twice so far. Lame.

I know he's not done with that one yet. Is it going to be longer, or is the demo the full sized game? I have the demo, but haven't had the chance to play through much of it yet. It looks beautiful though.

No, according to some interview I read awhile back, the demo is only a fraction of the game. Konjak's been waffling on it forever though, so it's not terribly clear how long the end-product will be.

It's great to see Konjak make it on Steam, though. Nice to see the universe step up and reward good deeds from time to time. Guy has sort of an artistic temperament, but he's capable of so much win.

That was unexpected! Bought it for $10 a year or so ago and it was completely worth it. So replayable, and I'm not nearly good enough to finishing all of it yet.

And the guy gets action games. He pays attention to how attacks should work and how animations should communicate information. There are higher-profile indie developers who are just starting to figure that stuff out and yet won't manage it for years to come.

And, yeah, the demo of Iconoclasts was brutally short for all its teases. (Took quite a few tries for me; Konjak does not hesitate to force you to figure out advanced moves ASAP.) It sounds like it's undergone some big changes since then, too.

So far as I've played, there aren't any weird gestures or anything that would be difficult with a touchpad. You have to target each enemy by putting your cursor over it and clicking to attack. You also use it to get to grapple points. Thankfully, special moves can be activated by keyboard. My gut tells me that it'll take a some getting used to, but should be viable with touchpad.
