Cute em ups
I've only played the Paradious series via emulation *I'll purchase once I have some spare money to burn*
So any other cute em ups that I should check out via Mame?

You and me both. That game is beautiful. Way too easy but it is a visual and aural treat. Perfect PCE game to play on a summer afternoon.Damocles wrote:My personal favorite is Star Parodia on PCE-CD.....gonna need Magic Engine for that one though.
EDIT: Wouldn't it be sweet if Konami had Hudson's devs make a new Star Parodia type shooter? Imagine the Star Soldier ship with new allies like Goemon and the octopus in a vertical comical followup and a little PSP with arms and legs.

I can dream.

The GunBird games aren't really quite cute 'em ups in the way these other games are. They've got lots of serious mechs and what nots, it's really just the fantastical characters. No fighting giant lollipops. Still great games.
Game Tengoku is pretty ace, but no one can touch the Parodius games, the end-all be-all of cute 'em ups.

At this point I'm inclined to favor Harmful Park over the Parodius games I've played. HP is more cute, more manic (on the higher levels of difficulty), and more distinctive (my main problem with Parodius games is that they feel like just more Gradius).alpha5099 wrote: no one can touch the Parodius games, the end-all be-all of cute 'em ups.
Don't forget about Fantasy Zone, the original cute-em-up (as far as I know).

One I found the other day: Plus Alpha. 1989 game by Jaleco. Nothing really spectactular, but a solid, fun cute vertical game. The main girl shows up again in Game Paradise, which is one of my favorite Saturn games ever, so I guess that might be influencing my opinion a bit.

Keio Yuugekitai / Keio Flying Squadron for Mega CD is very nice (and very wacky). I just love the "POP!" sound you hear when you blow up birds.
I just played through the PCE version of the first Cotton game (Fantastic Night Dreams) and enjoyed it so much that I will hunt down the other parts of the series. I suggest you give the arcade original a try in MAME.
Rabio Lepus / Rabbit Punch (arcade, PCE) is semi-cute and quite difficult, actually.
Mr. Heli no Daibouken (arcade, PCE, forget all other ports) is another game with semi-cute, colourful graphics, and it's one of the best and most original games ever, IMO. Highly recommended! The PCE version has both arcade mode and a PCE exclusive mode where you don't lose as much energy on getting hit, so it's easier to get into the game.

Well, yes, this takes the prize. Though wierdness nearly overcomes cuteness here (as in much of Parodius).captain ahar wrote:i love HP more than the next guy, but i have to favor Parodius on this front (to be fair haven't play Star Parodier).
the imagery in HP while incredible (as are the mechanics, but i digress) they can't touch this:

Thanks, Turrican. My only hesitation has been that Xevious-style bombing I've heard about in the Twinbees. Never was that good at Xevious. I've been thinking about getting that Twinbee pack on the PS1 for a while now: I think I'll have to get it soon.Turrican wrote:Ganson, have a ride on Twinbees if you think Parodiuses are too much on the wacky side. Well if you have a Sega Saturn I would strongly suggest buying the Paridous Deluxe pack which is basicly the orignal Parodius and Parodius DA! on one CD. The good news is that it's pretty cheap these days when you consider the price of other shooting games on the platfrom and it's proberbly one of the best shump disk's out for the Saturn. (in my opinion)
That image was the very first time I ever saw a Parodius game. Game Informer has stupid quizzes in every issues, and back when I briefly subscribed because I had gotten a GameStop discount card, they published that image, or something immensely similar, maybe it was a different pilot, and asked what obscure dirty shooter it was. The image was small, I though the crossed-out Shoot ---> was the tanuki's penis. I was very weirded out, and I avoided the Parodius games for a while. Then I avoided Sexy Parodius for a while, then I realized the errors of my ways.captain ahar wrote:i love HP more than the next guy, but i have to favor Parodius on this front (to be fair haven't play Star Parodier).

Son of a.........that cat is in God Panic too....... What the hell? Is shooting the testicles of a cat a cultural thing?captain ahar wrote:i love HP more than the next guy, but i have to favor Parodius on this front (to be fair haven't play Star Parodier).

It's not a cat, it's a tanuki - an animal resembling a raccoon. According to popular myth, male tanuki have huge testicles. Tanuki are said to have mystic powers as well, and play tricks on people and such, but...Damocles wrote: Son of a.........that cat is in God Panic too....... What the hell? At any rate, the "tanuki have huge testicles" thing has been fodder for jokes in manga, games, and anime for a loooong time.

i'd just like to say that i think it is funny how whenever somebody says they have read Gameinformer, they rationalize it, me included.alpha5099 wrote:Game Informer has stupid quizzes in every issues, and back when I briefly subscribed because I had gotten a GameStop discount card...
I have no sig whatsoever.
Just like NP with the Zelda Bonus Disc. Actually, I got Game Informer for the discount too.captain ahar wrote:i'd just like to say that i think it is funny how whenever somebody says they have read Gameinformer, they rationalize it, me included.alpha5099 wrote:Game Informer has stupid quizzes in every issues, and back when I briefly subscribed because I had gotten a GameStop discount card...
