Saturn & PS-1 Game opinions & prices
Saturn & PS-1 Game opinions & prices
Hello.
I found these Saturn & PS-1 games & I would like some opinions of whether they’re worth the price.
For the SEGA Saturn:
Night Warriors – Darkstalker’s Revenge (E) (PAL)
Nights Into Dreams (E) (PAL)
After Burner II + Space Harrier + Outrun + Super Hang-On Collection Disc (E) (PAL)
Golden Axe the Duel (E) (PAL)
They’re in pretty decent condition boxed, front & back covers & manuals.
10Euros (12$) each.
For the SONY PS-1:
CastleVania Symphony of the Night (E) (PAL)
Mega Man X3 (E) (PAL)
They’re very used; they come with the front & Back covers but have no box, nor manuals.
The guy at the shop is asking 20Euros (24.5$) for each of them.
After trying to bargain with the guy, I couldn’t manage to lower the prices, as he insisted that these games are being sold for 40Euros (49$) on ebay & the Internet in general.
I really want these games but are they worth it for those prices?
How much are they usually sold for?
I’ve been searching for some time now & this is the 1st shop to come by that has them.
Any opinions will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Saturn & PS-1 Game opinions & prices
Night Warriors – Darkstalker’s Revenge (E) (PAL)
--Better than its predecessor, apparently since it's much less of a SUPER-fest.
Nights Into Dreams (E) (PAL)
--This game is an aquired taste. It's really nice IMO, but don't go in expecting it to play like a conventional title. Bosses also require a bit of intuition that isn't obvious right away.
After Burner II + Space Harrier + Outrun + Super Hang-On Collection Disc (E) (PAL)
--Apparently you won't easily be able to find better home versions than this collection
Golden Axe the Duel (E) (PAL)
--haven't played it yet, but hear that it isn't bad.
CastleVania Symphony of the Night (E) (PAL)
Mega Man X3 (E) (PAL)
Symphony of the Night is one of my all time favorites...somewhere in my top 20, but it sells for $20 complete in stores around here. Granted, it's the GH version, but the Non-GH version isn't that expensive either.
MMX3....I have no Idea
But the US SNES version is sometimes listed at $350 new.
I say wait for the MMX pack.

Golden Axe The Duel is a badly aged 2d VS. Fighting game. You should get it only if it's really cheap. It was enjoyable back at the time, but it may not get too much love nowadays.
Nights is awesome, but like it has been said, not for everyone.
Castlevania SOTN is AWESOME. Everyone should play this game someday

No it's the Non-GH version. Besides the original (Non-GH) PAL version, has a much cooler front cover than the US version.
Yeah I completed a copy of SOTN back in 1997. Awesome game!
It was oneof the reasons along side RayStorm, X-2, Soul Blade, In The Hunt, etc... that I bought a PSX in the 1st place.
So now I'm trying to track down an original copy.

I wouldn't call any of them must haves, although outrun is decent fun, and space harrier has nice music.
SOTN has a good soundtrack too, worth checking out for that I reckon. I'd go with the saturn version so you don't have to deal with all the plot getting in the way. The actual gameplay is ok, there are better platformers out there but it's something you should try. Same with Nights.

PAL SOTN is actually a bit rare (it never got a re-release) and you might have to pay up to 90 EUR for a complete copy.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Whether you absolutely must have the case and manual is up to you, but I'd say the game itself is so good 20 EUR is a steal.ST Dragon wrote:So you're saying that I should get SOTN for that price?

NiGHTS would cost around $10ST Dragon wrote: About how much would these Saturn Games cost at your area?(
Sega Ages would cost around $20
Nightwarrior would be around $10
Golden Axe would be anywhere from $14 to $24, give or take a bit.

Yes SOTN is awesome & would have payed more if it was new.
But I would like to get the original in a better condition than this.
I want the manuals at least...
By the way, does the PSX version of MMX3 have the same non-full screen, letterboxed display, with those crappy graphic boarders like the Saturn version?
I’ve read that they did this on the Saturn because the SNES (where the game originated) had a smaller resolution.
So is it the same for the PSX or is it full screen like the rest of the X series on the PSX?

Greatest Hits is the lower-cost (US$20) re-release of some of the better games for the PSX. Sony puts them out and puts them in a slightly modified case with a green border that says "Greatest Hits" and I think the foil on the top of the CD is different as well. It's a lot like the super-lite series of games released in Japan - usually very good games at very low prices. Some collectors don't want the GH versions since they are not the originals... but the actual game is the same.ST Dragon wrote:What's the "GH version, Non-GH " versions ?
Whenever I find an original non-GH versions of Final Fantasy VII or Xenogears at a yard sale, I'll always pick them up for a few bucks just because they work so well as trade material to collectors. I have no problem with GH versions in my collection - I have several (including Castlevania:SOTN which is simply amazing and cost me $20).
The Saturn also had Greatest Hits versions in Japan (I can't remember what they were called... "best collection" maybe?). They normally had slightly reduced cover graphics with a red vertical stripe to the left. Several shooters got GH releases for the Saturn which are easy to find and reasonably cheap.
The Greatest Hits trend has continued with the PS2 and XBOX (called Platinum).

Nope. The PS1 version runs at 256x224, the original SNES res. I could be wrong, but I don't think the Saturn can go that low (it's native res is 384x224, same as CPS stuff), hence the letterboxes.ST Dragon wrote:By the way, does the PSX version of MMX3 have the same non-full screen, letterboxed display, with those crappy graphic boarders like the Saturn version?
Definitely pick that one up. You're lucky, the PS1 version didn't even get released in the US. 50hz kinda sucks, but at least the text is in English.

Re: Saturn & PS-1 Game opinions & prices
Night Warriors - PAL version rarely turns up. Get it.ST Dragon wrote:Hello.

Nights - PAL version is a lot less common than the US one, go for it.
Sega Ages - worth 10e I'd say.
Golden Axe - doesnt turn up that much, 10e sounds about right but not too superb.
In short: you found a nice store

...and suddenly, a very freaky wormhole opened, and 4 3-foot tall market analysts fell out...
Actually, the Japanese equivalent of "Greatest Hits" is "PlayStation The Best" series. "The Super Lite Simple 1500 Yen" series came after (with more re-issues of some prior games, many of these releases were ported to the US by A1 Games) as well as "PSOne Books". Capcom themselves had their own re-issue line called "Capu Kore" (Capcom Collection).llabnip wrote:Greatest Hits is the lower-cost (US$20) re-release of some of the better games for the PSX. Games like Gradius Gaiden have been released 3 times: Original Release, PlayStation The Best Re-release, PSOne Books Re-re-release.
The Saturn re-releases were called "Sata Kore" (Saturn Collection) and the DC re-releases were aptly titled "Dori Kore" (Dreamcast Collection).

dude you should get SOTN for any price, its the best game ever made imo.ST Dragon wrote:So you're saying that I should get SOTN for that price?
all the other games can be found for less money, i hate nights but alot of peoplelike it so thats proboably the only game worth getting beyond sotn, the others are bland at best..

MMX3 never had a US release?!
That's strange, because a friend of mine is download the US version of MMX3 as we speak. It might be the JPN Rock Man X3 NTSC renamed to Mega Man X3!

By the way the PS-1 re-releases are also called "Platinum"
I got Soul Blade & Tekken 1 "Platinum" brand-new, quite cheaply and are just as good with manuals.
Yeah, that makes me so mad. I mean, Detana DP, Gokujou DP and G Gaiden have all been released three times: regular, the best and Books.SheSaidDutch wrote:Shame theres no re-release of Gradius Deluxe Pack
Instead, Sala DPP and Gradius DP did not get any rerelease at all... What is it, they want to artificially create rare items to please ebay sellers?

Not to mention that with little effort they could have released Gradius DP again fixing that PS2 compatibility problem.
OK so I got them all, except for SOTN & MMX3 which I got from another shop along with Starfox (E) 10Euro (12$), Virtua Racing 32X (E) 2.5Euro (3$) & Colony Wars (E) 10Euros (12$)
And here are my opinions:
Night Warriors – Darkstalker’s Revenge (E) (PAL) – Saturn - 10Euros (12$)
Very good arcade conversion. (I’ll have to fire up the MAME version to compare) but the speed & animation seem to be great. Is this supposed to be Darkstalkers 2, because I all ready have Darkstalkers 1 & 3 for the PS-1
Nights into Dreams (E) (PAL) – Saturn - 10Euros (12$)
Personally I don’t understand the hype around this game. It’s got pretty good 3D graphics but the game play isn’t that great. Most of the times you fly around collecting stuff (basically a show-off of the Saturn’s 3D capabilities).
The Boss patterns are quite interesting though.
This should have been for about 3-5Euros (3.5$ - 6$) the most.
Does this have any value as a collectable item by the way?
After Burner II + Space Harrier + Outrun (E) (PAL) – Saturn - 10Euros (12$)
Arcade perfect ports, but what annoys me is that After Burner II doesn’t let you define a specific button to activate the After Burner Jets at will. It seems to be used automatically if you do a specific manoeuvre or fly into the screen after death….
Is there any way to use it manually (by pressing a specific button) same as in the real Arcade/MAME/FBA or Nebula emu?
Same problem occurs in the 32X version.
Surprisingly the Saturn graphics aren’t that better than the 32X version…
Very good compilation never the less.
Golden Axe the Duel (E) (PAL) - Saturn - 10Euros (12$)
This game tries to imitate the scaling & rotation (Zoom in & Out) of the NEOGEO Fatal Fury & KOF series, but fails miserably!
The Zooming is so sluggish even the SNES/PCE & Genesis could have handled it better.
Controls aren’t the game’s strong point either, very jerky.
This is surprising too, as the Saturn in supposed to be the powerhouse in 2D & better than the NEOGEO in that aspect.
I’ve never played Golden Axe the Duel for the arcade to compare it to the Saturn port…
This was not worth 10Euros. More like 3-5Euros (3.5$ - 6$) the most.
CastleVania Symphony of the Night (E) – PS-1
This is as cool as the copy I completed back in 1997!
I found this at another shop, boxed with manuals & front-back covers, very good condition for 27Euros. (32$)
Mega Man X3 (E) – PS-1
Same as SOTN, I got this from another shop fully boxed with everything for 15Euros. (18$).
The PS-1 PAL version is full screen without the annoying letterboxed display & those crappy graphic boarders like the Saturn version.
It does however have the 2 small black horizontal borders on the top & bottom of the screen like all PAL games do, but the regular PAL screen is much larger than the Saturn version.
The JPN Rock Man X3 is full screen like all US-NTSC PS-1 games.
Also Mega Man X3 never had a US-NTSC release, only EURO, JPN & PC-CD-Rom.
It’s an awesome game & my personal favourite along with X6.
As for Virtua Racing 32X (E), I don’t have a 32X expansion to try it, but having played the emulated version, I just had to get this.
It comes in a box that is in terrible condiotion, with no manuals but the cartridge it self is in good shape.
I think it was worth the 2.5Euros (3$) I paid for it.
Colony Wars (E) – PS-1 – I only got this to complete the trilogy & for the cool FMVs Starfox (E) – SNES - Is a classic that shouldn’t be missed from any self respecting collector.
Out of curiosity, do all these games have any value as collectable items & if so how much?
Thanks in advance.

One thing to remember about the Saturn rev of Vampire Hunter, you need to input a code at the Options Menu to open up the Appendix Mode, which gives you a ton of different options (one of them being Full Animation ON/OFF). You see, by default, the animation for each of the characters has been cut by about 20%... however, if you turn on Full Animation and then play a Mirror Match, the game will load every frame (two different characters fighting will still have fewer frames though). The Appendix Mode also allows you to change the backgrounds (and intro) to the original Vampire as well as being able to change the music between Vampire and Vampire Hunter.ST Dragon wrote:Night Warriors – Darkstalker’s Revenge (E) (PAL) – Saturn - 10Euros (12$)

And yes, Vampire Hunter (aka Nightwarriors) is the second Darkstalkers game. The series is: Vampire (Darkstalkers), Vampire Hunter (Nightwarriors) and Vampire Savior (Darkstalkers 3).
You have to realize that it's a score attack game. It's not just about completing the levels -- it's about extending your chain as long as possible and improving your score. Give it a chance, I think most people who dislike the game just haven't put enough time into it.Nights into Dreams (E) (PAL) – Saturn - 10Euros (12$)

Anyway, it's not very collectible. One of the most common Saturn games.
I bought Golden Axe: The Duel yesterday (US version) at a local shop; the game itself is damned pretty. I see a lot of influences from the Sam Sho series in it (the zooming in and out, having the thief give out potion or health, weapons-based gameplay), just not as technical. A good looking and actually enjoyable button masher, but nothing more.
It woulda looked even better with a RAM cart.
