Is there a shmup equivalent to sonic?

Post by TrevHead (TVR) »

You may or not know about about the shitstorm over at the Sonic Retro forums where the fans have been doing what fanboys do over sonic 4 plus some one leaking a vid of the whole game.
anyway this will give u the jist of it http://www.destructoid.com/sonic-the-he ... 9978.phtml

Im wondering if there is any shmup series that is the equivalent to sonic? like a series that has gone downhill with fans wanting a return to the good old days or a shmup that if remade would never make all the fans happy and we would see something akin as what is happining with sonic 4.

Not a shmup, but run and gun, but Metal Slug is the closest i can think of.

it's been on a downward in the 2d department, the 3D outing was an abomination, and the DS/PSP versions are slightly better than the later 2D games. Seems to mirror Sonic quite nicely.

I want to say Darius, but i think that's just because i'm still peeved at how arse Burst is.

R-Type? (In fairness, I thought Final was okay.)

People who think Cave's older games are better than their newer stuff?

That opinion is pretty divided though, I don't think there's anyone out there who likes newer sonic games compared to the Genesis ones, all nostalgia intact.

that article is pretty funny though, and shows how retarded that fanbase is.

yea like we could never be like that eh? 8) (deletes rant on why everyone should play for 1cc and why game journalists need to be hung, drawn and quartered)

yea r-type came to me especially with it changing to a strategy game. Plus maybe DeathSmiles 2 aswell? due to Caves choice to go 3D

I'd say the closest thing is Thunder Force.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Hey I've come from some pretty retarded fanbases as well like touhou, but I don't think a single revived game could possibly get the shmups forums panties in a bunch like Sonic 4 is for sonic retro forums. You're right about how some members seem to rage over how people should play the game, and our sentiment over today's game journalists, but those are legitimate concerns imo.

Maybe if Gradius Arc if it happens to be a motion controlled wagglan-fest, sure it might be bad but not to the point where we'd have an admin-stapo enforce thought crimes for the game.

True, while every gamer does have a little fanboy inside him, This thing with sonic 4 is very extreme. EDIT: and those who dont play for 1cc/ score and games journalists (even worse games journalists who dont play for 1cc/ score) really should be hung, drawn and quartered.

Maybe a couple more games in the past 20 years would have let them let the hate out in a steady drip. A tsunami's worth of abandonment issues.

I can't say I'm waiting around for the second coming of Jesus Christ, no not even Parodius or Dangun Feveron.

.... well a Dangun Feveron 2 would make my monocle fall out.

To be honest I was surprised when I discovered so many people actually liked Sonic games. I would chuck it up to "lol furrys", but that doesn't explain how that Call of NFL Blitz FPS Edition keeps getting remade and profitable.

I hate people, is what I'm saying. Someone make me a DF2.

I also think Thunder Force is the closest. Especially after VI.

You could probably exchange series with genre. All we get nowadays are either Cave-games or western-released retro cash-ins. It's pretty easy to be disappointed with that.

I do have to say that Darius Burst was friggin great though.

The way Cave has been making their games pander more and more to the loli audience is kind of like how Sonic got more and more Furry friendly. :)

Star Fox, if we're counting rail shooters as shmups. Actually, the parallels are uncanny - right down to the furries.
Personally, I never thought much of Star Fox though.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Star Fox 64 was a pretty awesome game and is still fun to play for score.

Shmups are too niche to sell out or be distorted like Sonic. One of the few types of game that is made purely with avid fans in mind. I'll 2nd the Metal Slug suggestion though. Any time I play anything after 3 (and I have them all) I get bored fast. Yet I've probably played X 100 times and still thoroughly enjoy it (I'll 1cc it yet!).

Metal Slug makes no sense. 4 may not have been that great, but EVERY game has at least been GOOD. 7 is fantastic.

in terms of sheer volume and the fact that it's had a shitty outing into 3D whilst being weaker since the initial outings , the parallels are there.

But true, other than Metal Slug 3D it's not got to the turgid state of Sonic.

Then again, i can't think of any other series that has matched Sonic in terms of decline, shmup or not.

Thunder Force is definitely the one that jumps to mind here, although it's a weird question. But yeah, the best games were on the Genesis, and the sequels just didn't quite get the magic right.

I take it you didn't see the mine cart stage, it looks ass. Can't believe they're still trying to do stupid shit like that with Sonic. It looks so boring and pointless.

i think Sonic 4 is a mixed bag
as a member of the major italian board (Sonic Dream; Sonic Italia ended long ago, and it sucks now) i can say it properly

first of all, Sonic's model sucks; they clearly got lazy and didn't wanted to do a full-fledged 3D model, they chose the easy way doing a stupid ass pre-rendered one
it does blend well with the levels and the game itself, but i really can't watch it for long, it just look like the same from Sonic Rush, remodeled for HD
at least when you press down, it crouches like the old games

gameplay-wise it's ok, they got the right balance between speed and platforming (unleashed was only speed, trial and error. that's a stereotype that doomed Sonic, you just hold forward and you beat the level, what a pile of bullcrap) though i don't understand why they put the homing attack on a game that rehashes the old-school momentum-based one
i hope it's possible to complete the game without using it

the level design reminds me of Sonic 2 (which i don't like it, second least favourite Sonic game of the old 16-bit trilogy imo)
according to Sega, they got the Sonic 3 level designer to do it, but it doesn't seem it's true, judging from what i saw of the game until now

the music it's anything but Sonic, it's just for nostalgia-fags
bosses are the same thing, copy/paste with HD filter on, they got lazy again

overall, this episode 1 got old things that were missing for a very long time, i really hope Episode 2 will bring some improvements (and maybe make it look like a real sequel to sonic 3 instead of a rehash of sonic 1 and 2 with ridicolous music) but it seems that Sega will never bring us a Sonic Adventure 3...

Sonic Unleashed was intended to be a Sonic Adventure 3, as far as I know.

if Sonic Adventure 3 was supposed to be a werehog button masher adventure, with day stages where you're only supposed to hold forward to beat all the levels, then wow, Sega really goes skyhigh with fantasy

at least Sonic Advance 3 was decent with that duo system

Doesn't this game do not too bad in Japanese arcades? It was at a couple of places while I was there about half a year ago.

Or are you talking about here and western communities :P
