Both have some of the best graphics/effects seen on the Genesis.
As for the gameplay it depends on your tastes.
Sub Terrania is an 8-Way shooter & plays very similarly to "Fly Harder" on the AMIGA (but harder) & basically gravity is against you. It gets very frustrating at times.
Ranger X has some weird controls, huge bosses & not very memorable music. The Bike-Mecha that follows you everywhere is a nice touch.
Controls aren't as good as cybernator but if you like Platform-Shoot Mecha action games you'll probably enjoy this.
It depends on what games you're trading them with?!
If it's for Gynoug, Gaiares, TFIII, etc... then Hell no!
Other similar games are Metal Warrior & Cybernator on the SNES.

What's said above
Ranger-X is very cool, but it takes a while to get used with the controls. I'd like to add that it took me just 2 days to finish it in default difficulty. Still it's an awesome game
Subterrania is even BETTER. Subterrania is an EXCELLENT game IMO. But truth has to be said, it's not for everyone taste. Some people will find it too much frustrating, and some people will give up after 15 minutes of hitting walls and not being able to dodge any incoming fire.
Subterrania takes a LOT of practice up until you can beat even the early stages. And if you can't control your ship properly, you are screwed in harder levels, as the game gets incredibly hard.
But if you have the time and the patience for it, the game will reward you with some awesome gameplay and great level design.
It's like Fly Harder indeed, but a lot better. For a more known game, it's like Thrust, but obviously a LOT better.

I haven't played Ranger X, but Sub Terrania is nothing short of fantastic, if you were ever a fan of Gravitar, or similar type shmups-the graphics are absolutely gorgeous, AND, you can find the game on Ebay for less then $5 new.

The other two games in question are:
Pitfall
Krusty Super Fun House.
_____________________________________________________________
With Ranger X : First of all, the first level music is vary annoying.
Second of all; How do you pick up the green cylinder before the first boss battle? That's all I need to know right now.
With Sub-Terrania The original controls are spastic at best. Even with my control customized to my liking, having to always press the thrust button to keep myself afloat is not to my liking.
I'll give Ranger X and Sub-Terrania another chance.
But, to me at least, It looks like ST will be going back to the gamepad store.

Well, I'm probably alone in this, but I LOVE Pitfalll Mayan Adventures. I've had no problems with the controls, and the graphics and sound are top notch for the Genesis. Definately get this if you are even remotely a fan of the series.dtdg wrote:The other two games in question are:

Yeah Mega Turrican is awesome. It's got better graphics than the AMIGA version but worse music. Definitely one of the best Platform shooters on the Geny.
Also give these a try:
Alisia Dragoon
Rocket Knight Adventures
Rocket Knight Adventures 2
Kujaku-Oh 2 - Peacock King (U) |
Mystic Defender (J) |---> Same
Jewel Master
ESWAT Cyber Police - City Under Siege
Blades of Vengence
As for these:
Pitfall
Krusty Super Fun House.
I think the best version of Krusty is on the SNES (Super Krusty Super Fun House)
Pitfall has been ported for all major consoles: SNES, 32X, Genesis, Jaguar but I don’t remember them being that different.
The SNES probably has the better audio of the bunch.
The gameplay isn't my cup of tea but if you don't mind having to memorize the levels, it's quite good.
What games are you trading all these for anyway?
These are my favorite Genesis/32X/CD games:

Ex Ranza / Ranger X is probably my favourite MD game. Both graphics and music are great, and so is the gameplay. I never had any problems with the controls, but I do think the game is a bit on the easy side. I beat it the first time I ever played it, with the given number of credits. Don't know if I ever 1cc'd it, but it shouldn't be a problem.
My biggest complain is that it seems IMPOSSIBLE to beat it if you play with the hardest difficulty setting. There's a platform missing in one of the levels which you need to land on to proceed. I don't know if there's a way (some kind of puzzle?), but I've never heard of anyone beating this level on hard.
Don't forget it supports the 6-button pad, using it makes the game even better.

I just played Ranger X last night on an emulator.
The big issue I have with this game is not the controls, but the fact that you're swarmed with enemies, and meanwhile your main weapon powers down every time you use it-and then you have to wait for it to power back up again.
IMO, that's just plain obnoxious-in a game like Blowout, this works, but NOT in a fast-paced shmup like Ranger X.
And I didn't notice any power-ups either. Also, the droid, or whatever it is, doesn't seem to help at all.
The graphics, especially the explosions, are just amazing for the Genny, but overall, I think SNES Cybernator is a MUCH better mech shooter.

1. I only use 'the main weapon' on bosses or when in a critical situation. I use A & C shots most of the time, did you even notice those?dave4shmups wrote:I just played Ranger X last night on an emulator.

2. There are powerups (in form of new weapons).
3. The bike is very helpful. Not only can you control it using the x,y,z buttons, but you can also hop inside it for a completely different play style (press and release 'down' to jump with it).
This also gives you an alternative life-bar, the ability to change special weapon, and your shot is homing while inside. In some levels, you get a large spaceship instead of the bike.
And finally, it's not really a shmup, so try not comparing it to shooters (or any other genre at all for that matter, since it's pretty different). It does need a little playtime, and I think you'll see that you'll be well rewarded once you've gotten the hang of it.
BTW. I don't mean to tell you what to like and what not to like, just trying to defend my favourite game

I would certainly change Pitfall and Krusty's Super Fun House for Subterrania and Ranger-X.
Pitfall is good, but short-lived. It's very easy to finish it.
Krusty's Super Fun House is so boring sometimes. It has some very wicked puzzles, and it took me a LOOONG time to finish it (It was my 1st bought MD game, back in.. oohhh, 1993 or something like that).
Subterrania will surely last a lot more than both of those games.
Like I said, I didn't find Ranger X all that hard, I finished it pretty quickly.. But maybe I just clicked with the game very fast.

Black Mariah, you could have given a more objective answer. That flame still doesn't answer my question, which originated due to the fact that there's a thread about non-shmup games on the shmups area.
EDIT AND NOTE TO T-FORCE: By this I'm not saying "Oh, the mods aren't doing their jobs", but rather that "Is there a reason a thread about non-shmups should be posted here?" Thanx0rz.

It's not a flame. If it was a flame I would have added a "You stupid fucking douchebag" or "You illiterate ass-ramming cockmaster" like I usually do. Does it honestly fucking matter that there's a non-shmup (questionable, as Ranger X is just as shmuppy as Bangai-O) question in here? Is your life so wrapped up in shmups that any reference to any other genres infects your eyes with pus-dripping boils? Fucking Christ on toast dude, LIGHTEN UP.
Blow up self to involve enemies.
Please stop putting the words "Christ" and "f***" together.
Apply your own rule to yourself. If I'm a "pedantic twat" for commenting about something that doesn't conform to the rules of this forum, what are you for calling me that? Which is also against the rules of the forum.
