Underappreciated games this console generation

Post by Enhasa »

This thread has two purposes for me: give and take. The first is simple. I've been really disappointed with this gen so far. But I'm thinking since I don't play nearly as many games as I used to, and I've never usually liked the most popular stuff, maybe I'm just missing on the unique and hidden gems. Or maybe those sort of games are all portable now. But for whatever reason, where did all the hidden gems go? The PS2 alone was ripe with these. Please let me know of some, I'm desperate! Please try not to name stuff like Demon's Souls or Chromehounds that didn't sell well but is well-known and far from hidden on the internet, but maybe that's the best you can do. By the way, the closest I can come up with is The Club.

The second part is to pimp a just-released game that I think is the best candidate (and thus, one you might want to check into as a possible recommendation to you). Ironically (or not), it's also published by Sega. That game is Resonance of Fate, it's an unconventional RPG, and it's by the same development team that made IMHO the best RPG of the previous generation. This game is getting buried under FF13, and it's a pity since if you were disappointed by FF13, maybe you should try this game instead.

Here is what the Japanese think of these games: D for FF13, S / A for ROF.

EuroGamer has the only western review so far, and it gave a 8/10, which is the same thing it gave FF13. But actually read the reviews and FF13 reads as a 7 at best, and ROF as a 9 at worst. (This is not only my opinion but shared by everyone in the comments.) Reading both is a very interesting exercise into how reviewers give scores based on the name of the game and name of the publisher. I want to quote the end of the ROF review here:
At times you'll have no doubts that this is the best JRPG of the generation, a fast-paced, interesting and creative detour from a stagnant mainstream. At other moments, usually when facing the tenth Game Over screen during a difficult boss battle, you'll wonder whether the game suffers from poor balance, born from its developer's stubborn insistence on novelty for the sake of it.

Either way, by the end of the adventure you'll be certain that Resonance of Fate's approach is a one-time affair, unlikely to inspire any copycats. Its ideas are simply too leftfield, and too fully realised to be closely imitated.

Nevertheless, this is a hugely interesting game, as fascinating as it is frequently frustrating, as engaging as it is eccentric and, for those who are hooked by its quirky charms, it will provide one of the most inspired approaches to the JRPG seen in a decade.
To me, that first paragraph reads like "sometimes this is the best JRPG of the generation, and the other times it's even better!" :D

For those that didn't bother reading the review, here are some random selling points for me:

- fucking awesome and actually challenging battle system based on positioning and execution (subtract 1-2 review points out of 10 for difficulty since publisher's name is not Atlus)
- awesome dystopian setting and focus on a small group of three people vs the system just like Breath of Fire 5
- a JRPG with guns and no magic (omg I know) and the main character is actually like 30 years old
- the ability to customize your guns with all sorts of hilarious and crazy shit
- the ability to customize almost every aspect of your characters' outfits and have them reflected everywhere (what is this, a WRPG?)
- day / night system, these always rule
- lots of optional sidequests and shit, nonlinear overworld exploration
- music by Motoi Sakuraba plus Kohei Tanaka, who does lots of anime stuff I've never watched but is highly regarded... but also composed Xardion, which (I kid you not) is one of my favorite game soundtracks of all fucking time
- available for both PS3 and 360 (on one disc for both versions!! sweet that means low cutscenes), both versions essentially identical so get what you prefer
- soft save anywhere! soft, not hard, so noobs will still cry
- published by Sega and not Square Enix because head developer said (to paraphrase) "we went with Sega because this is too awesome/unconventional for SE and they are pussies who wouldn't let us try this"
- I dunno what else because I haven't even played it yet (more in a sec) and I don't follow gaming news so that Eurogamer review is basically all I know!
- edit: oh yeah, doesn't matter to me but there is full Japanese vocal track included as an option, although the English VA is supposed to be really good

I wasn't going to include the ROF part of this post, but after my experience buying this game yesterday (I am on spring break so I won't get a chance to play until I return to my apartment), I figured "wow, maybe this game really is going to go under the radar." (I still underestimate the influence of having SE on your cover I guess.)

This story isn't interesting but it is demonstrative. I went to the local Gamestop and asked for the game. The guy said "Residents of Fate? Is that even a game?" which I thought was awesome but an easily offendable and serious customer might be upset at, lol. This dude might be fired some day. Anyway, he couldn't find it, even after getting another guy to help and look it up, because in fact there was none. So they called the nearest Gamestop in the next town, and after finding out they had exactly one copy available, I went and got it there. I've had to jump through more hoops to get a newly released game before, but that's usually a game like a niche 2d shooter like Heavenly Guardian or something. This is a game by the people who made Star Ocean 3 (which sold a bajillion copies in the west) and published by the people who make Sonic. But maybe Sega is the new Atlus.

There are so few games worth playing that are not well known this gen because they are so expensive to make and nobody wants to play old school type games anymore. Like you said anything that fits into that category has been downgraded to XBL and PSN.

The only games that got missed that I found really good were Dead Space and Infamous. Both are Western style games but both ooze quality and style.

Joe Dangerous looks good.

I thought Dead Space and Infamous were both very well received and appreciated?

Anyway, for me I'd say Red Faction Guerrilla, I had a ton of fun blowing stuff up in that game.

Same could be said for Red Faction. I do not call an 85 on Metacritic based on almost as many reviews 'underappreciated'.

Some of these definitely fall under your 'cult but actually pretty well known' qualifier (actually, I woulda thought RoF did too), and I haven't played a lot of them, but here goes anyway:

Knights in the Nightmare
Earth Defense Force 2017
Valkyria Chronicles
Muramasa the Demon Blade
Tatsunoko vs Capcom
No More Heroes 1/2
Pata Pon 1/2
Prinny - Can I Really Be the Hero?
Soul Bubbles
Henry Hatsworth
A Boy and His Blob
Sin and Punishment 2
Deadly Premonition
Retro Game Challenge
Sukeban Shachou Rena http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN3pipMGHNg
A TON of indie PC games

Definitely explore downloadables - most of the interesting stuff is there nowadays (with handhelds/Wii a strong second).
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Shouldn't all Cave ports this generation be considered underappreciated?

By the way, if someone got interested in Resonance of Fate, you might want to check the official thread at GAF: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=390278

Red Faction: overappreciated

The Club needed a bit more content or something. Probably more gunz woulda been good. That reminds me, I need to check out Borderlands still.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

There's no way in hell Valkyrie Profile 2 was the best of the previous gen. I bought that shit on release.. even bought the Artifact Box (which I recently just sold), MASSIVE disappointment. Yeah, it looked good and had great graphics, so what? I can't think of a better RPG last gen right now but I'm sur--oh, Okami, Persona 3, Persona 4, Nocturne, Tales of Abyss, Odin Sphere, Disgaea, Ar Tonelico II and so on.

psmk2. Why not link to Amazon.jp reviews while you're at it, they're just as credible.

Borderlands is incredibly addicting. I'm kicking myself for not buying it when I was in the US.

Saint Row 2. Apparently it's been popular enough to get a platinum hits release, but I never hear anyone talking about it. It's easily one of the best gta style games around.

Silent Hill: Homecoming
True to series style, great settings, adult story, and people still hated it. Personally, I thought it was a great trip back to SH. Alot of fan service, with better combat.

It was virtually nothing but fanservice / rehash, when it wasn't missing the point entirely (power tools, so scary). It's a mediocre SH1-3 pastiche with added Hostel.

Darkness is a quality moody FPS with lots of entertaining and unique touches. Walking around in the dark is definately reminiscent of the Riddick games by the same studio but witht he added bonus of a solid story and Mike Patton voice acting. You also get demons that slay everything and repeatedly mention how much they like penguins.

EDF 2017 is pure arcade goodness. The weapon choice is a lot of fun and it's one of the best ever games for same console split screen co-op. How could you not want to make giant ants fly for miles like zero g bowling pins when struck by 20 misiles simultaneously.

As for Too Human, I think I have about 350 hours in that baby. It has plenty of flaws but remains one of my most fondly remembered co-op experiences of all time. I played it almost exclusively for about 3 months while unwell. The game only shows its true colours after you have taken a character to level 50 and start working on some custom armor suits. Farming for gear is quite theraputic and the level designs are a lot of fun to perfect. Definately not for everyone but certainly better than the reviews made out.

Crackdown

people bought the game for the Halo 3 Beta but the game is goddamn awesome. Think it has gotten some recognition afterwards as reviewers and podcasters? give it some praise in the afteryears.

Agreed. The games seem to be rather polarizing, but I enjoyed the hell out of them. They are on a short list of games from this generation that I will be compelled to revisit in the future.

Also, I'm going to go ahead and throw out House of The Dead: OVERKILL. Again, somewhat polarizing - The mainstream reviewers say it's too short. Some folks may complain about the length of the cut scenes (which are skippable). If neither of those things bother you, I'd say it's the best on-rails shooter since... I don't know what. I'm embarrassed to admit that I even got into the excessively cheesy story. I see this game rotting in the bargain bin all the time for $10-$15. A steal at that price.

Agreed on this one. There was still some room for improvement, but I quite enjoyed it, and will definitely need to consider grabbing the sequel coming out soon.

Bayonetta hasn't sold well at all...I don't understand why. The game is brilliant, and that's not including all the tits and ass. very heavy on the ass i might add. It's the best action adventure (if that's what you call those types of games) I've played since godhand.

It's too bad the average gamer is a dumb ass and would rather play dante's inferno or god of war 3. at least god of war isn't terrible, but ain't great and it can't even be compared to bayonetta.

How is dead space underappreciated? It's an FPS which means it can't be.

Bayonetta got pretty much 9 or 10/10 in every review I read and Sega announced that it sold 1.1 million copies. Pretty damn appreciated in my book! Great game though, I'm currently playing it through for the first time.
