Was browsing on the Japanese PSN site and a banner promoting the classic PC Engine Super CD-Rom2 shmup title of Gates of Thunder appeared. Clicked on it and says that it is available for d/l to either your PS3 or PSP for a mere 600 yen. Is it a pretty accurate port of the original PCE SCD shmup?
I understand the original GoT used redbook audio format for it's cool BGM tunes (since it is playable on a standard music CD player without listening to tracks 1 or 2). There was even a hidden "easter egg" trick to get U.S. region GoT Super CD to display the original JPN GoT main screen title. Even the demo kiosks of the USA region Turbo Duo provided by TTI would load up the U.S. region GoT game for potential Duo console buyers to try out back in late 1992-early 1993. Had a blast trying out GoT at a local Toys-R-Store Turbo Duo demo kiosk once...it mentioned that the console could had for a mere MSRP of $299.99 USD (quite pricey back in the day).
Some U.S. retailers would heavily discount the Turbo Duo & Turbo Express priced to move at the cheap bargin pricepoint of $99.99 USD during 1994-1995. Toys-R-Us sold brand new boxed TurboGrafx-16 consoles at $29.99 in January of 1994.

Not a port, It's emulated. Think of it as a PCE SCD iso injected with an emulator thats just a few kilobytes in size.

Thanks for the clarifcation, ZOM. I gotta admit the original SCD version of GoT does have some cool BGM tunes worth listening to in it's uncompressed redbook format. I suppose it was recorded live, is that right?

LOT is also available for the Wii via virtual console. It's actually quite decent. Compared to the like's of Magic Engine and Ootake i find the emulation superior on the Wii as far as the control is concerned. Before i actually owned a Turbo Duo i believed the game had input lag via emulation. I was wrong as the original game felt the same. For some reason this game has a slightly awkward feel in control, i can't put my finger on it but it is a little strange. Is the Ps3 version based on the TG16 version or the SCD?

I was fiddling around with the TTI version of GoT one day and managed to press some random joypad + button presses and lo behold, the original Japanese GoT title screen appeared instead of the usual USA GoT title screen. I tried to remember how exactly I did it but wasn't able to replicate it a 2nd time. I'd have to go back and see if it is do-able again. I don't even think the folks at TTI really knew about this hidden easter egg trick (changing back to the original JPN region GoT title screen) with the USA region GoT game either. Or perhaps TTI did leave the JPN region GoT main title screen in but it is disabled (unless you input the secret input commands to "unlock" it). Still an interersting GoT related "easter egg" trick that not too many folks know about until just very recently.Endymion wrote:What was this? I'm not sure if once you do unlock the JPN GoT title screen & start up a game session, if it is the original JPN SCD version of GoT mode or the USA version of GoT that you play. Sounds intriguing nevertheless.
Interesting to learn that TTI had included a fourth hidden PC Engine classic game of Bomberman in the 3-in-1 USA region Super CD-Rom2 release of GoT, Bonk & Bonk 2: Bonk's Revenge pack-in game release with every new Turbo Duo console purchase.

I'd have to assume that the PS3 version of GoT would be based on the original Japanese Super CD-Rom2 GoT version for the PC Engine Duo/Duo-R/Duo-RX platforms.lawnspic wrote:Is the Ps3 version based on the TG16 version or the SCD?
