Getting a PS3...any recommendations?
I'm gonna go ahead and get a PS3 next month, and was wondering if there are any games that I am unaware of that I may like.
I don't like western RPGs, or FPS, or GTA type games, or any of that other stuff that sells millions.
I like J games, but i'm really not into any of their RPGs, since I think they've gonna insane with the cinemas.
I have: GOW Collection, GOW III(pre-ordered), Demon's Souls, and Disgaea 3.
I would be interested in MGS IV, but I hear he went totally insane with the cinemas. Question is, after I play it once, are they infrequent enough that I could just skip them and not have to mess with them constantly? Also, codecs... OK, part 2 was nuts. Part 3 was OK. This is probably more annoying than the frequency of the cinemas. If the codec calls are more in 3's territory...well that would be good.
Anything i'm missing? Remember, I have a 360 also, so just stuff that's on PS3 exclusively.

I really haven't played much on PS3 myself, but Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is definitely worth at least one play-through. Don't expect much of a challenge, but I found it entertaining. I was somewhat less than impressed by Uncharted though; Interesting for a bit, but it just started drgging on after a few hours.
Still need to get Demon's Souls at some point though, seems to be popular around here.

Valkyria Chronicles
And MGS 4 is definitely worth the $20 its going for these days.

Re: Getting a PS3...any recommendations?
Ninja Gaiden Sigma is cheap nowadays and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 has some nice extras. I'd also get Wipeout HD and the Fury expansion on BD. The Ratchet and Clank games seem nice too and the first one is dirt cheap now. 3D Dot Game Heroes looks like a nice NES Zelda homage and is coming out soon for $40. There's also the Uncharted and Motorstorm series, which are not my cup of cake but might be worth a look.
MGS4 has crazy long cinemas and lots of them. You pretty much spend more time watching than playing and some of them almost put me to sleep. Part 3 is better, imo. The cinemas are more to the point and there are less codec interruptions.
The PS3 is not a bad investment right now because of the sizable back catalog of good games and the current momentum it's enjoying. I kind of regret having a Wii now.

Make sure you get Way of the Samurai 3. Excellent game.

I second this - funny as hell.Ruldra wrote:Make sure you get Way of the Samurai 3. Excellent game.

Also, if you're into classic zelda dungeon beating - 3D Dot Game Heroes. Charming graphics, solid game mechanics, and helluva funny parody-filled RPG world to explore.

Gran Turismo 5 will finally be out for the PS3 on March 30th, 2010 and it won't be apearing on the XBox 360 anytime soon...is a PS3 racing title exclusive. Best to buy/use a PS2 or PS3 version of a Logitech force feedback steering wheel + gas/brake pedal combo set for more realism than with just using a medicore Dual Shock 3 controller for racing. Of course, there's always Gran Turismo 5 Prologue worth checking out if you're into racing games. And Namco/Bandai's PS3 racing title of Ridge Racer 7 is a blast when racing with up to seven other racers online. Looks great in 1080p running at 60fps arcade-spec framerate.
If you like fighting games, then Tekken 6, Street Fighter 4 or BlazBlue will be right up your alley. Best to pick up an PS3 Hori Real Arcade Pro 3 joystick for better player input & interaction. Of course, if you find a used "Pelican PS2 to PS3 USB adapter", you can use your older Hori RAP joysticks & other various PS2 controllers + it doesn't have any lag whatsoever. Plan on spending no more than $3.00 tops at a Gamestop store for a used one.

Re: Getting a PS3...any recommendations?
Earlier this year GT5 got delayed again (and even the March 30th date was Japan only), with no new release date given. Current speculation for release is late 2010 now.

Re: Getting a PS3...any recommendations?
Developer Polyphony Digital really needs to get their act together & release GT5 pronto. There is always time for new updates + car downloads/game engine improvements later on down the road. They pulled the same "delayed release" stunt with their GT4 release for both JPN & USA PS2 market back in 2005. It wasn't until June of 2005, that GT4 was finally released Stateside. I'd have to assume that Kazunori Yamauchi wants GT5 to be the best that it can be before actual release but futher delays won't do any good if it ships with minor bugs or not. Futher upgrades will remedy that situation if it needed be. Even the PSP version of GT was mentioned back in 2005 and finally released several months back.
Yeah, I gotta admit using unlimited turbo boosts on Ridge Racer 7 is a blast with other racers online. Pedal to the metal...see you at the finish line. ^_~

Dead Space is totally awesome in atmosphere.
Burnout paradise.
RE5 if you like that sort of thing.
Infamous is very very under rated and missed by quite a few. I don't even like the genre but found my way loving the platforming, climbing and blowing shit up. Its like Spiderman in 3D

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Anybody know how 3D Dot Heroes turned out? That looked pretty damn awesome.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1&2 - Brutally difficult compared to GOW games, but not unpossible even for average gamers. GOW difficulty comes more from learning patterns. NGS is more about not letting the enemy get a hit on you...ever!
LittleBigPlanet - Yeah, there is a reason this game *still* sells for near full price. It's just that good.
Folklore - Not spectacular, but a good game to fill in between the AAA releases.
Can't think of any others right this moment...you either have the others I would recommend (Demon's Souls/Disgaea) or you aren't that interested. (FPS/Cinematic Hell)
I haven't tried CrossEdge, but it sounds like it might have less cinematic cruft than the other big RPG releases.

There's a demo on PSN, I recommend checking it out. The revamped graphics are OK-ish but it's the same old Thexder with a few level-layout changes.

Re: Getting a PS3...any recommendations?
It's a lot easier and there are some welcome tweaks (enemies just slow you down and pass through you, you can press a button to orient yourself in one direction), but they cut out a lot of secrets and a whole bunch of levels. I say it's worth the asking price.

Re: Getting a PS3...any recommendations?
Well actually the reason it's still selling for full price is that they stuck $30 worth of DLC on the retail disk and jacked up the price accordingly, otherwise it would be selling for $30 by now.PainAmplifier wrote: LittleBigPlanet - Yeah, there is a reason this game *still* sells for near full price. Time Crisis 4: Just be sure you play it in 480p or 480i mode and all's fine. Higher resolutions cause slowdown.
Razing Storm: Not out yet on PS3, but it's sure to happen (unless the Guncon 3 has caught the Jaguar/Sega CD/32x bug- come on Namco, show it some support). Hopefully the announcement of a release date for this is not too far off. I'd put up with the Guncon 3's lack of recoil for a home port.

Re: Getting a PS3...any recommendations?
Typically I don't play mainstream or action games, and I don't follow closely what comes out on PS3, but my overall impression is that it is sadly behind the PS2 when it comes to the sort of smaller budget Japanese games that interest me. Probably my favorites for the system are Valkyria Chronicles, Disgaea 3, and Pinball: Gottlieb Collection. Uncharted has its moments, though I generally don't care for that sort of thing.
Download-wise I think the system is pretty nice, especially if you have a PSP as well.
