Worst way of spending 80$?

Post by KindGrind »

Mine from 10 minutes ago.

Locking yourself outside the house while taking out the dog. Christ...

I should become a locksmith, that's quite a pay for 5 minutes of work.

I'm so bad at locking myself out of everything.

I always have to have deadlocks on my place or else I'll lock my self out. Also, I always carry a spare car key in my wallet, that way someone can mug me and take my car, er, I mean so I don't lock myself out of my car, which I do continuously.

I vote overdraft fees. Overdraft fees because the deposit you made two days earlier still has not cleared, while the purchases made five minutes ago clear instantly.

Yours is pretty bad still. My car came with a wallet key, which has saved me numerous times. It's also especially good when you want to defrost the car and still have it locked.

haha- I came in expecting to say something along the lines of "Limited Edition of a game that sucks (or the LE ends up sucking itself)"

Halo 3 came to mind ($130- after they raised the price from $89 before the game launched- then found the LE for $40 while the game alone was still going for $50. On a related note- I just saw the Helmet and such at a thrift store today for $3.00).

Then I saw some of the things you guys posted and realized I don't have a leg to stand on haha. A locksmith or overdraft fee is definitely up there. (Now that I think about it- IRS stuff goes up there too)

I locked myself out of my house on a Friday, and couldn't get back in until the Sunday night. Nearly froze to death. Because it was a weekend the locksmith wanted a lot - about £130 if I remember rightly. I prefered to wait until I could get hold of the landlord, who was away for the weekend. I'll never do that again.

A friend of mine locked himself in the toilet during a game meet a few weeks ago. We had to call a security company in the middle of the night that broke open the lock. Didn't cost me anything though since I live in rented apartment. You should always keep a spare key at nearby friends house in case things like these happen.

Second that. Or when debit purchases get handled as credit and don't get processed for weeks, that's always a nice surprise.

Yeah, but I live in a crappy student apartment where they use the cheapest stuff avaible. I think it was some plastic part in the lock the had been worn down so you couldn't turn the lock.

That's a very bad situation to be in...thank your lucky stars that your trusty cell was at your side. Might have been more countless hours passed before the gf arrived. Did you get jittery wanting a smoke to calm down the nerves? Talk about a worst case senario indeed.

I took an elevator once to get to a respective floor but the doors wouldn't open. Tried pushing the "Open Door" button but the doors wouldn't open. Had to go back to the first floor and get on a second elevator and the same stint happened again with the doors not opening on the floor that I wanted to get off. Went back down to the first floor again and got on a third elevator and finally got off on the right floor. Whew...talk about a crazy day dealing with elevators as they seem to have a mind of their own sometimes. Upon returning to the elevators, it was just my luck that the third elevator opened up that took me up successfully was able to take me down to the ground level. ^_~

if i hadnt had my cell, she wouldnt have been home for about 6+hours

im very careful about that door now....you gotta make sure its actually unlocked...its one fo the types that you have to actually turn the knob after unlocking it to disable the latch....if you dont, and pull it closed behind you it latches and wont open from the outside

Yeah, probably. In London, they dont give you a ticket if youre parked on a yellow line or something, they "steal" your car  the 1st time it happened, i was parked across a point where the kerb drops to allow pedestrians to cross the road, for fucks sake how trivial?! the 2nd time, it was because my car was untaxed. they dont even tell you, you go out to get in your car and its gone. Fucking stolen as far as you know. then you phone the police to report the crime, and they give you a number to ring to check if its been impounded. grrr

If this is the thread for sudden unwanted but necessary spending, I've got one (not really $80, but comes close and written as $80 below for effect).

Ordering some crap online where the seller only ships UPS. Already paid the seller the necessary shipping fees, then like 3 months after the item is delivered, getting an invoice from UPS for $80. How's that for a kick in the balls? I paid (the seller who paid) their damn shipping fees once already, what is this BS? I refuse to buy anything from a seller who only does UPS now.

A friend of mine did that in my driveway with his car, loud music in the car, at 3 AM.

About UPS, just don't buy anything from people if you know they're using it. Unless they live next door or something. Was bitten once on a 15$ game, ended up paying 45$ fees. At 60$ it wasn't such a good deal after all.

overdraft "protection" (that's worse than the penalties elsewhere)

From what I've seen maybe you should be thankful they didn't immediately take it out and crush it like I've seen done to some cars

If it makes him feel better, a few weeks back my girlfriend's family came to visit and her 4 year old niece locked herself in our bathroom. The door doesn't actually lock, there is, or was, one of those chain locks on the inside of the door only instead of being horizontal it was vertical. She went in to the bathroom and managed to get the chain locked, but wasn't tall enough to push it to the top to unlock the door.

Here's one: How about lending your car to someone who took it on a toll route without a transponder, then you move to a new house. 4 years later, you get a bill for $120 (Some bullshit like ~$10 toll charge + 4 years of interest), and when you call to sort it out, you find out their policy is to not pull an updated address from the Ministry of Transportation until the bill breaches $X. Then after explaining the situation and having them clear you of the interest, you send a cheque for the remaining bill and a year and a half after that, you get a new bill for $180 because the fuckers lied to you, continued to let it gain interest rather than trying to contact you to collect, put a lock on your license renewal and somehow have two accounts under your name that they won't disclose, due to privacy reasons, for two different vehicles despite you only ever having one license plate. All the while they've been destroying your credit rating and were the reason you could never get a credit card application approved despite having thousands of dollars in savings with the very same bank.

FUN. TIMES.

As a locksmith myself, I can guaran-stinking-tee you that that isn't the worst way to spend $80. BTW: what time of day was it when they performed their work, and what part of the country are you located in?

Wow! Guess I need to move to that side of the pond. Even at my highest rates (actual holiday itself, or between 1-5AM), for a lockout, I top out at $125.

Me too. Started the car to warm up (last winter) while I was scraping the ice off the windows. A short-circuit activated the power locks. No keys, no money, no phone, no friends nearby. Did not cost me a dime, except the gas for the time the car was running.
